Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 gets Android 2.1

Sony Ericsson has started the first wave of Android 2.1 upgrades for the Xperia X8. Some of the mid-range smartphones will get the upgrades today and this should be followed by a “gradual” rollout to every carrier and country that supports the X8. We don’t have a solid timeframe since it depends on approvals from each carrier.

Some additional Xperia X10s are also getting the upgrade. The X8 updates are the same as for the X10 mini and mini pro, which didn’t get the full-size X10′s 720p video recording but did add support for media sharing with TVs, new versions of Sony Ericsson’s custom Mediaspace and Timespace layers, and the updated app and compatibility support inherent to Android 2.1.

We’d been hearing some murmurs about Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 mini, but it’s the X10 mini pro that’s a surprise. They are nearly identical except for launch colors. The mini ships in black, pearl white, lime, pink, red and silver, while the mini pro comes in just black and red flavors. There’s also a bit of a size difference, and the pro features a QWERTY keyboard.

They run Android 1.6 on a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 and will ship in both North American and global 3G variants. Some other features include quad-band EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth, and they come with a 2GB microSD card.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 smartphoneAmong the many product announcements released by Sony Ericsson today the most significant has to be the release of the new XPERIA line by introducing the XPERIA X1. SE calls the design of the X1 an “arch slider” as it slides up to expose the full keyboard with a large 3-inch VGA display on top. The impressive list of features continues with a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus and video, a microSD slot and communications via Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, and quad-band GSM/EDGE, and 900/1700/1900/2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA.
