One million Xbox 360 owners use Netflix on the console |
In an effort to make one console appeal to gamers more than the competition, console makers like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are adding new features. With the global economy down the console makers are also adding features to make gaming systems perform tasks outside of gaming to broaden their appeal.
One such feature was the addition of Netflix streaming capability to the Xbox 360. The Netflix application was made available for Netflix and Xbox Live Gold customers in November of 2008. In the roughly three months since the Netflix application was made available Microsoft says that over a million Xbox 360 owners have installed and activated the Netflix application.




One of the biggest game launches this year was Grand Theft Auto IV. The game has been out for a while now, but will still probably be one of the most popular titles for holiday giving. Shortly after the game launched Rockstar announced that it would be bringing downloadable content to the platform.
Normally I stick to FPS, Driving/Racing, and the occasion RPG game when it comes time for some gaming action. I don’t usually go for the skateboarding or sports type games. I have seen a few commercials for the new Shaun White Snowboarding title though that makes it look interesting.
Last weekend I downloaded the Mirror’s Edge demo for my PS3 and spent a bit of time playing. The game is very cool and fun. You are a free runner that moves atop the buildings in a massive city delivering messages.

That being said, this is a shining example of an area where Microsoft held on to become a dominant force in a vertical category. To celebrate this crowning moment several announcements were made which should make things even more interesting.
Now that the Simpsons have a new feature film heading for the big screen Fox has teamed up with Microsoft to make a shiny yellow Simpsons-themed Xbox 360 to help promote the movie. The 360 case and controller have been given a glossy coat of Simpsons-yellow paint along with a big picture of the top half of Homer’s head on the side.
