IPEVO unveils new P2V point of view webcam

Posted in Computer Components by Shane McGlaun on November 2nd, 2009

ipevopovcameraWebcams are pretty much the same today. Some of them have better optics and more megapixels than the others have, but design wise they all pretty much sit on top of your monitor to capture video. IPEVO has announced a new webcam called the IPEVO P2V USB CAM.

The new camera is on an articulating arm that looks more like a desk lamp than a webcam. The camera itself is a pen-style camera with a resolution of 2-megapixels. The cam features a macro mode for shooting items as close as 2-inches away.

roundshot-sbThere are several makers of webcams that have been producing cams with HD resolutions for a while now. Among the companies are Logitech and Microsoft. For some uses HD resolution may not be enough and for these businesses, a company called Seitz Phototechnik has unveiled the new Roundshot Livecam D2 HD.

The camera has the capability of making full 360-degree panoramic video of a scene and can be used by hotels and resorts to show off their location and amenities. The camera has a whopping 66 million pixels and can shoot at night.

Hercules Dualpix HD720p high-def webcamThe Hercules Dualpix HD720p may look huge, but it’s just a close up. Thank god. You wouldn’t want a gargantuan webcam like that in your face. The webcam is HD 720p capable, complete with an autofocus lens and integrated microphone.

It articulates in two different ways, so you can rest assured that you will get yourself in the shot, or show off more things behind you. The 1-megapixel CMOS (1280 x 800) can capture 30fps 720p video, or interpolated pseudo-5MP stills, and it hooks up to your XP/Vista/Windows 7 PC via USB.

Microsoft introduces the LifeCam Cinema

Posted in Microsoft by Shane McGlaun on August 21st, 2009

microsoftlifecamcinemaOne of the things that are typical of many webcams that are built into monitors and notebooks is that they suck. The video quality of the cheap webcams inside netbooks for example leaves a lot to be desired. Video is grainy, resolution is poor, and any recorded clips with the camera are choppy.

Microsoft announced a new webcam called the LifeCam Cinema that promises to change all of that. The webcam has 720p resolution and an external mic. The native 720p sensor is perfect for the user who wants to record video to upload to YouTube.

Panasonic "Nano Care" webcam-styled beauty gadgetLook at that gargantuan webcam. It’s not a webcam at all. It’s Panasonic’s Nano Care beauty appliance. Model numbers EH-SA42 and EH-SA41. Both devices will keep your area moist throughout the day so that your skin will be moist, not dry.

The EH-SA42 doesn’t even need any water to do it. So yes, what we have here are a pair of simple humidifiers. Who knows if it will help your skin, but at least you’ll have a honking huge webcam looking thing on your desk. Both models will arrive in Japan this November, where moistness will reign.

Dream Cheeky offers Spiderman webcam for geeks

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on April 13th, 2009

spidermanwebcam-sbI was never a fan of comic books in my youth, but I did like the Spiderman TV series that used to come on and Hulk when I was a kid. I also enjoy the movies from Marvel that have been coming with increased frequency. That said, I am not such a big fan that I would buy the toys or other items with superheroes on them.

If you are a big fan of Spiderman and want something else to go along with your posters and Underoos with the web-slinging hero on them, Dream Cheeky has a new Spiderman USB webcam that looks like a retro film camera.

Minoru: Your Personal 3D Wall-E Webcam

Minoru
A new 3D Webcam we heard about earlier this year is set to make the rounds at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, followed by early January sales here in the United States. It is called the Minoru 3D Webcam and it will price around $90 when released.

The Minoru is said to provide a 3D stereoscopic image because it is a single piece with two cameras spaced roughly the same distance apart aside. Strange looking similarities to Wall-E aside, the developer of this Webcam says users will tend to look into the eyes of the camera as they light up – perhaps to suck more cash out of one’s pocket.

Does your webcam footage look less like you, and more like a collection of face-colored pixels? Do you need to turn on every light in the house at noon for it to even begin to work? Maybe you don’t even have a webcam. (Gasp! Shock! Horror!) Webcams have gotten a lot better in the last couple of years, but the newer ones can be pretty pricey.

Take, for example, Logitech’s latest camera, the QuickCam® Vision Pro. For $129.99, you get a camera with some amazing specs. Autofocus, 30 FPS, a 2 megapixel sensor, and high quality 720p images up to 1600 x 1200 pixels. That’s a nice webcam, right? Though, for $129.99, it may be out of most people’s price range. Luckily, Dillyeo can help you out.

Webcam equipped headphones put eyes over your ears

Webcam equipped headphones put eyes over your earsSeems like we have webcams in everything these days. They’re in everything and they are everywhere. It must have occurred to someone that the one place they missed was our ears. Which is a strange place for webcams, as we usually use them for other’s faces.

That’s what makes this so odd. This headphone/webcam combo will show you everything that is on your side. Maybe designer Andy Kurovets is just really paranoid. Maybe he has enemies that use his blind spots to their advantage. But chances are he just wanted to look like some fashion forward Sci-Fi dude.

Virtual Webcam Girlfriend is enticing, a bit creepy

Virtual Webcam Girlfriend is enticing, a bit creepyYou might remember this virtual nerd girlfriend from several months back. The Dennou AR Figures virtual 3D girlfriends are for those extra lonely nerds who don’t get out much. I think the idea is that you would want to check in on her now and then, apply spankings as needed and occasionally give her gifts, all safe in the knowledge that she can’t run or call the cops.

You install webcam software and when your camera detects the special cube onscreen, it puts a 3D companion into your environment. It’s available right now in Japan for $125. And we don’t want to know what you two do in your spare time. A slightly NSFW video below

Minoru robot webcam for 3D video chatWeb cams have just gone all view-master on us. The Minoru looks like a super-cute Japanese robot and is designed to deliver the Internet experience in 3D. The stereo webcam uses two lenses to form one image that appears three-dimensional…when the viewer wears a pair of 3D glasses. When are we gonna get beyond these nerd glasses?

It’s compatible with chat services like Skype, AIM, and Windows Live Messenger. Apparently the device can take 3D photos and output 3D video that’s uploadable to YouTube too. He’s part E.T., part Wall-E and he’ll be on sale in December for $100.

MingJong M6637U robotic webcams to take over world one desk at a time
A Taiwanese company known as MingJong has released some colorful robotic UVC compliant USB 2.0 webcams called ‘M6637U’ that sport 1.3-megapixels.

These little guys have the right idea. If you want to take over the world, you have to appeal to those lovers of cute and colorful desk accessories. Put a bunch together and they are clearly interacting, comparing notes for our eventual assimilation. Then when a human comes back into the room they all freeze. There’s not a whole lot of info on these guys, but be weary. Never turn your back on one.
