Vonage, a provider of VoIP home phone services, has announced a new mobile application designed specifically for the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and RIM’s Blackberry devices providing alternative discounted rates for international calls. The application is a free download available today available from the Vonage site or through the iTunes App Store.

The application will allow mobile users to dial international calls as they normally would with no extra steps or special numbers to enter, and those receiving the calls will see the mobile number in their callerID just like a regular international call. In the future Vonage plans on extending the offering to a monthly flat rate, but for now the discounted per-minute charges will apply.

It’s no coincidence that there’s a new Trek movie just as Dream Cheeky will be releasing a USB VoIP/Skype phone in the form of geek gold: A replica of the communicators used on the original Star Trek TV series.

The phone is compatible with XP, Vista and OS X Tiger or greater, and you’ll get speakerphone, mute and volume control functions, plus the usual Star Trek sounds. Stuff like, “Transporter room ready to beam up”. It’s due out in April, but we don’t have any pricing info yet. Should be affordable though.

Tandberg has made it known it will soon be making available a new VoIP video phone for the business sector. It is called the Tandberg E20 - no specific pricing information was made available.

The Tandberg E20 delivers what its maker says is “CD quality audio with DVD quality video.” It sports a five-megapixel digital camera positioned at eye-level view as well as a 10.6-inch display screen for a better visual experience on both sides of the call (assuming you have another E20 on the other end).

A company by the name of CuPhone has introduced a simple USB adapter for using your regular phone as a Skype device. It is called the “Echo Free” USB-to-Phone Adaptor and you’ll find it pricing around $34.

The CuPhone “Echo Free” USB-to-Phone Adaptor plugs into the USB port of a PC, allowing “the user to plug his regular phone into the RJ11 port on the adaptor to make and receive either Skype or normal landline” calls. The adaptor has built-in echo cancellation technology to improve audio quality.

If you have a PSP slim and you’re up to date with the firmware you may have been thinking about taking advantage Skype through the Wi-Fi connection on your PSP. One of the hurdles might have been getting your hands on a headset to use with the Skype feature, which seems to have taken an awful long time. In fact, you may remember that the Japan launch was delayed due to something wrong with the headset microphone.

Well, now SCEA has finally come around and yesterday launched the Skype compatible headset to make it easier to get some free VoIP calls from your PSP - one more thing that makes that portable game console just plain cool. The headset comes with stereo sound and a microphone for $30, which is more than we had heard, but at least its available now.

The Symbio phone is from Thompson and it has an interesting even stunning look, though looks are not all it has. It works as a VoIP phone but it’s cordless too (DECT), and even has internet radio built in as well as being able to download RSS feeds.

It even comes with integrated rechargeable batteries, which allows you to carry it around for about 6 hours as you listen to internet radio stations and or make calls. Nothing yet as far as pricing and availability, but it’s sure to be a hit with some nice features and daring design.

Logitech announced today its first wireless stereo headset designed for Internet calling with a PC. The Logitech ClearChat PC Wireless headset is priced at around $100.

The Logitech ClearChat PC Wireless headset makes use of wireless 2.4 GHz technology to let users enjoy stereo audio up to 33 feet from their computers. A USB transmitter handles broadcasting the signal to the headset. One can also chat wirelessly via VoIP calls made from a computer, chatting via a noise-canceling microphone on a flexible boom.

Ericsson introduced its new Femto Cell Solution on Friday. The new access point will give consumers using GSM and WCDMA phones the ability to make VoIP calls using their mobile phones at home to take advantage of cheaper rates.

The Femto Cell Solution is a personal-sized home access point with WiFi and ADSL compatibility. Ericsson claims that the solution will give operators the opportunity to offer home-zone packages and strengthen its relationship with subscribers and also provide incentives for all users in a household to have the same mobile operator.

Ulf Ewaldsson, Vice President and Head of Product Area Radio at Ericsson, says: “This is a major technological breakthrough. Ericsson’s Femto Cell Solution enables mobile operators to compete on the fixed access market, offering price-competitive, innovative and secure services to their customers.”

A recent report by Unstrung Insider shows that 3G home base stations “Femto cells” could pose a market challenge for WiFi VoIP phones in homes and businesses. According to the report, “Ultra-low-cost home base stations that allow wireless users to communicate across any IP access network using a standard mobile handset will challenge WiFi VOIP for dominance in the consumer fixed/mobile convergence (FMC) market. ”

What this report is referring to is a challenge between phones such as the WiFiFone from Samsung, or one of the iPhone’s from Linksys (not Apple) and mobile phones that utilize a more traditional 3G technology which has a much broader coverage area.
