Apple applies for Thunderbolt trademark

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2011

Thunderbolt is the new communication standard developed by Apple and Intel. You might remember that it was unveiled a few weeks ago with the new MacBook Pro computers. It was thought that Intel was mainly responsible for its development, with Apple playing a small role. However, Apple’s latest move seems to suggest that it played a larger role.

Apple has filed to trademark the name Thunderbolt, branding the high-speed data transfer as something they own, not something they share with Intel. So is Apple just trying to slide in and claim it or is there more to this?

HP trademarks Gyst, Myte, Veer for possible Palm phones

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on December 16th, 2010

HP has been busy today having filed a trio of trademarks for devices that could represent Palm’s 2011 webOS lineup. The USPTO filings refer to the Gyst, Myte and Veer in generic terms but they could fit the description of a smartphone. These three could be the previously codenamed Mantaray, Stingray and Windsor, with the previously mentioned Broadway maybe being the Pixi 2.

We don’t know what these phones will do versus the Pre 2 and Pixi 2, but at least one will likely to be a touch-only model. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

Google trademarks Speedbook name

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on August 27th, 2010

A new trademark filing by Google shows that Google has trademarked the name “Speedbook” under computer hardware. A speedy notebook? A speedy eReader? A book laced with cocaine? It could be any of the above.

It is likely an upcoming tablet or netbook powered by Google’s Chrome OS. We don’t have any actual details on what the Speedbook might be, until Google decides to fess up and tell us. We’ll keep our eyes and ears open.

Nintendo Files Trademark For Zii

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on December 15th, 2009

wii-sbNintendo has filed Trademark for the name Zii. Huge mistake for such a large company since Creative already owns it. Could be they want to call the next Wii, the Zii, but Creative might disagree.

The trademark recently popped up on the Japanese trademark database. The filing covers video games and electronic devices, but contains little information. Our guess is that it might be the HD Wii that we’ve heard rumors about. Hopefully more info will come soon.

Apple iGames coming our way?

Apple filed protection with the USPTO over the Apple trademark as it relates to gamesNow this doesn’t mean that Apple has any real games in the works, but it does certainly look like Apple at least wants to keep the space open for themselves with regards to games using the Apple name. The folks over at Trademork.com caught wind of a filing made last week by Apple to the USPTO to protect the Apple name as it relates to gaming hardware, including hand-held units, video game machines, toys and battery powered computer games, among others.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Apple head this way with some type of iGames, however. In case you hadn’t noticed, they seem to have made quite a hit with handheld media players, the iPod if I remember correctly, and a certain touch-screen mobile phone seemed to also gain quite a bit of attention lately.
