Verykool R80 Rugged Survival Phone

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on October 20th, 2010

Rugged phones are usually more rugged than pretty, since they are made to survive harsh conditions. But here’s the exception. A company called Verykool has a new rugged phone called the R80 that looks attractive. The phone is a quad band device supporting 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies and it uses GPRS class 12 technology.

Some other features include a 2.4-inch screen and it has a screen on the back that is a 1-inch OLED. There’s also Bluetooth, USB tethering, and PC sync capability as well as a 2MP camera and four hours of talk time and ten days on standby.

Survival credit card: Survival tool for tough economic timesA standard credit card is no survival tool. It won’t even cut anyone really. There isn’t much that it can do for you in dire situations. But the Tool Logic Survival Card is actually useful.

It won’t help you shop, but it will offer you some handy tools for survival. It has a magnesium fire starter to start fires, a serrated knife to cut fish or cut an attacker, a signal whistle, tweezers, even a toothpick and an LED flashlight. This thing is awesome if you are stranded on Lost island or are just forced to quit playing WoW and face life.

Heatsheets Survival Blanket, bright orange cocoon

Heatsheets Survival Blanket, bright orange cocoon
The Heatsheets Survival Blanket is for emergency situations, not for those who have a weird cocoon fetish. Anyway, I’m pretty sure you can’t eat your way out of it after metamorphosis. It fits two people and conveniently has survival and first-aid instructions printed directly on the blanket.

The bright orange color makes it easier for rescuers to spot, though with both people in it and moving around it would probably look like the blob from a helicopter. Hopefully they will want to investigate rather then call for an airstrike. Apparently it reflects up to 90% of radiated body heat so don’t be afraid to get a little frisky while waiting for help. Say, did it occur to anyone that you might have to leave the safety of the blanket to read some of those fancy first-aid instructions? That’s not good if you are in freezing conditions.

World’s smallest fishing rod & reel pen
If you’re an outdoors kind of person, but don’t like to carry large gear, such as awkward and long fishing rods, this gadget is for you. It’s the smallest fishing rod in the world. Apparently, it actually has some quality to it. It’s made of stainless steel and polished aluminum. And guys take note, just because you have a small rod, doesn’t mean you can’t reel in a big fish.

They say it can catch a fish up to 4lbs in weight. When it’s all closed up it measures just 8 inches, but will extend to 37inches. It’s small and lightweight, perfect for the Bear Grylls type to quickly catch dinner and continue adventuring. You can store it anywhere. Can hold 120 yds of 5lb line and comes with hooks and everything else you need to get started.

Survival Kit in a CanI have never been fond of food that has eyes and can look at me as I eat it. As such I stay away from salty, fishy snacks like sardines. ThinkGeek has a new survival kit that is packed in a sardine can to provide a waterproof seal for the necessities of life should you find yourself stranded on a desert island.

ThinkGeek says the can is airtight, waterproof, crushproof and packed with 25 survival items including a non-aspirin pain reliever, adhesive bandage, alcohol prep pad, antibiotic ointment, book of matches, compass, chewing gum, sugar, salt, energy nugget, duct tape, fire starter cube, first aid instructions, fish hook and line, note paper, pencil, razor blade, safety pin, reflective signal surface, tea bag, waterproof bag, whistle, and wire clip.
