Sony Pictures hacked by Lulz Security, claim 1,000,000 passwords stolen

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on June 2nd, 2011

You shouldn’t kick someone when they are down, but that is just what Lulz Security has done by breaking into SonyPictures.com. It claims to have stolen the personal information of over 1,000,000 users, stored in plain text format.

Lulz says that it was done with a simple SQL injection. Part of the group’s exploit is even posted online in a RAR file, which contains over 50,000 emails and passwords of users. Poor Sony. They just can’t catch a break. The Playstation store was only just restored and now this.

iPhone passwords get stolen within 6 minutes

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on February 10th, 2011

Password theft is a serious problem. And with the iPhone gaining more support in the enterprise scene, people have begun taking a more serious look at the security of the device. And so some reports have surfaced that thieves can extract and decrypt passwords stored in your iPhone. What’s more, they can do it in less than 6 minutes.

That means they can get things like your Gmail login, corporate VPN, home Wi-Fi, MS Exchange details and more, using a method that involves jailbreaking the phone and accessing the data. You should install the Find My iPhone app to remotely wipe your phone in case it gets stolen.

Halo Bike Lock texts you when your bike is stolen

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on July 11th, 2010

Summer. It’s a time of sun, fun, bikinis and…bike thieves. This concept from designer Steve Hunt looks just like a halo. It’s designed so that the connector cable is housed within the frame of the lock itself, which makes it harder for thieves to cut your cable.

The coolest feature however, is that Hunt wants to have an integrated wireless card inserted into the lock itself, so that when your bike gets stolen, the lock will notify you.

Some screenshots of the upcoming BlackBerry Shield service have now surfaced. This service will function like Apple’s “Find My iPhone” feature for iPhones with MobileMe. Basically, BlackBerry Shield will allow users to track their lost or stolen phones using Google Maps.

It will also allow users to remotely wipe important information from the device using a web browser. Some other features include custom lost and found messages, remote password settings, and alarms to help you find the device when it’s in your immediate area.

Ex-employee says Seagate stole Hard Drive Silencing Technology

Posted in Seagate by Conner Flynn on December 29th, 2009

The drives may be silent, but an ex employee is not. The former employee is accusing Seagate of stealing the technology from MIT researchers (violating an NDA), and also alleges that they destroyed the blueprints in order to hide the evidence.

The lawsuit has stretched on for a decade believe it or not. It will be interesting to see the outcome if there ever is one. Especially considering this new allegation.

Twitter Burglar Alarm tweets to let you know your stuff is being stolen

Twitter Burglar Alarm tweets to let you know your stuff is being stolenThis latest Arduino project turns it into a twitter home security system of sorts. The Arduino is used to monitor a home burglar alarm and send out status messages should the status change: Like when the alarm was activated or shut off, error messages, or just when the alarm actually sounds because you are being robbed.

The Arduino’s digital IO pins are wired up to the alarm’s output signals. An XBee wireless module was added, because the alarm control panel is some distance away from the ethernet hook-up, and a simple Linux server (with the USB XBee receiver) monitors any changes and sends the Twitter messages. @alarmdude By the time help gets here I’m gone. Left the zune on your desk.

Guy steals prototype phones from Sony Ericsson

Posted in Sony Ericsson by Conner Flynn on January 14th, 2009

Guy steals prototype phones from Sony EricssonThe details are a bit sketchy, but the word coming out of Sweden is that some 35-year-old tech obsessed dude was brazen enough to steal several prototype phones from Sony Ericsson’s Lund offices on Monday or Tuesday. As you might expect, he was arrested on Wednesday when police found the prototypes at his home. Oh and he apparently also had a hundred other phones.

According to Sony Ericsson, the thief wasn’t employed by them, but had a “working relationship” with the company. They think he used a pass card to gain entry to the building. Police also got their hands on a laptop with some questionable content. They’re estimating the total value of the theft totaled about $90,000.

Exploding bike lock keeps your ride safe

Posted in Security by Conner Flynn on November 5th, 2008

Exploding bike lock keeps your ride safeBike theft is always going on, especially in big cities. And it really sucks to have your bike stolen and have to walk home. Chances are they can’t even catch the thief, because your bike is so similar to everyone else’s and he’s long gone. These problems are now solved thanks to the exploding bike lock. The exploding bike lock…explodes.

If a thief tries to cut it, bang! It goes off. It sprays permanent dye everywhere when it’s cut, so the thief is covered and thereby easily identified. Chances are he’ll leave the bike and he will also be identifiable. I personally think that it would be an added bonus if it smelled like, say, urine. Serves him right. It’s called Karma punk!

1,400+ Playstation 2 consoles stolen in Florida

1,400+ Playstation 2 consoles stolen in FloridaIt took place in Melbourne, Florida. A truck carrying over 1400 PlayStation 2 systems was been stolen today. After a long trip over the weekend, the driver slept overnight on Sunday and didn’t realize the truck was gone until he woke up on Monday morning.

Apparently, the thieves were smart enough to disable the truck’s GPS before leaving with the goods. The police and the trucking company apparently had no idea where it went. There’s nothing worse then a truck full of stolen game consoles. Why do they never think of the children? The poor 30+ year old children…Now what will they play?
