Sony VAIO J all-in-one

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on June 8th, 2010

You have plenty of AIO options these days, but Sony’s new 21.5-inch VAIO J is one of the sexier options out there. Like it’s larger bro, the 24-inch L Series, the VAIO J has a 1920×1080-resolution display and a Blu-ray drive, but the larger model now features a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7-620M CPU, up to 8GB of RAM, and NVIDIA discrete graphics options with 512 vRAM. There’s also a 7,200rpm 500GB hard drive and it runs Windows 7 Premium, with Sony having added its touch-friendly Media Gallery software layer.

The L starts at $1,300, but the J will arrive next month starting at $900. You could always find cheaper models, but they don’t look this good.

Sony makes Tweeting device for cats

Posted in twitter by Conner Flynn on June 1st, 2010

If any animal’s language and lifestyle is suited to Twitter, it’s cats. I don’t know of any animal that speaks short sentences like a cat. And no matter what they say, it usually sounds like the same thing. They don’t do much either. Well, now Sony Computer Science Laboratories has created a device that detects your cats’ activities and Tweets them.

Using just a camera, an acceleration sensor, and GPS, it keeps track of your cats movements and will track basic activities like eating, sleeping, walking, and playing with other cats. Once it determines the activity, it will send one of 11 set text messages via bluetooth to a computer and post it to the cat’s Twitter feed.

Sony develops “rollable” OTFT-driven OLED display

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on May 26th, 2010

One of the benefits of OLED displays are that they can be flexible. Now Sony has a new ultra thin flexible OLED display, just 80µm-thick, which is less than a strand of hair. The OLED display measures 4.1-inches and has a resolution of 432 x 240 pixels and a contrast ratio of under 1,000:1.

They claim that it’s the first OLED panel that can play videos while being rolled up and stretched around a cylinder (like a pencil) with a 4mm radius.

The programs being offered will include some of the most popular HBO programs available like True Blood, Big Love, Entourage, The Sopranos and many more. There are multiple seasons of many of the shows available for purchase.

Sony selling ‘PlayStation Protection Plan’

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2010

Sony’s game consoles are solidly built and super reliable, sure there’s the occasional issue, but they don’t exactly suffer the RRoD. Even so, things can happen. And if you’re willing to pay for peace of mind, Sony has a new service agreement.

The “PlayStation Protection Plan,” extends the full warranty on your PlayStation 3 or PSP for another year or two. Sony’s plan requires you to mail your system to Sony and wait for the repair or replacement system; GameStop’s warranty allows you to turn in your system and leave with a replacement. Apparently controllers and cables are included with the GameStop protection plan, while Sony only covers the system itself.
