Samsung now producing LED edge-lit LCD panels

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on March 27th, 2009

samsung-logo-sbAt CES this year the big focus wasn’t on huge screens as it had been in the past years, but on how thin LCD and other types of TVs could be. There were some very thin TVs being shown at the show that looked pretty sexy. I still say that the only reason someone would care how thin their TV was is if they are wall mounting the set.

Samsung has announced that it is now in production with its energy efficient edge-lit LED backlit LCD panels. The panels are being produced in 40-inch, 46-inch, and 55-inch sizes for ultra thin big screen TVs. The screens are only 10.8mm thick according to Samsung.

Samsung S8000 and M8000 handsets leakedIt looks like Samsung was ultra serious about releasing about a million touchscreen devices this year. Two more handsets have been leaked and despite the fact that they look exactly the same, they have some differences.

Both pack in a 240 x 400 resolution touchscreen and both have a home button. Their exteriors make them look like twins, but under the hood is where the differences are. We don’t know much about the S8000, but we do know it features a 5-megapixel camera with dual LED flash and autofocus. The M8000 also has the camera but is marketed toward the music-listening crowd with a music key on the screen and a 3.5mm headset jack.

That’s not all, the 460DRn also has an integrated computer under the hood, so you can run your programs without needing another PC. The all-in-one display is water, dust and moisture proof, hence the “for outdoor use” tag. Don’t expect it to be vandalism proof however. Just tell yourself it looks good in graffiti.

Samsung BD-P1600 Netflix streaming Blu-ray player shows upSamsung’s new value priced Blu-ray player has been overlooked in favor of other better equipped players, but that doesn’t mean it’s not out there and being spotted at retail stores. This one was spotted on a Best Buy shelf.

Supposedly Blu-ray player prices will be dropping across the board, and it looks like Samsung is positioning the BD-P1600 as one of their lower-end models. $300 may not be dirt cheap but Netflix subscribers will probably like the unit. However wireless networking requires purchasing a Samsung USB accessory that isn’t released yet and BD Live requires at least 1GB of external storage.
