PlayStation 3 gets hacked by a USB-based modchip

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 22nd, 2010

The PS3 has been a tough nut to crack for hackers. Many have tried and failed, but now an Australian online store called OzModChips is claiming that they have a thumb drive that’s loaded with the world’s first PS3 Modchip.

The drive is available for a pre-order price of $169AUD which is about $150. I guess thats not a bad price to hack the device and copy games from discs and play pirated games. Not that we endorse that. It apparently works with any model of the PS3.

Xbox 360 commercial gets pulled for using PS3 footage

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 18th, 2010

It’s kind of funny that Microsoft’s ad agency thought they could get away with showing PS3 Final Fantasy XIII scenes, but that is just what happened. A very savvy British viewer dimed them out to the Advertising Standards Authority and the commercial was quickly pulled following a comparison of gameplay between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

The ASA said that “we noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two—the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colors were more vivid than those of the Xxbox 360.” Duh.

It will cost you ¥35,980 (or $421) for the Gran Turismo 5 Racing Pack, which will consist of a Limited Edition copy of the game plus a repainted PlayStation 3 slim with a 160GB hard drive.

Posted in Controllers by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2010

I’m okay with just sitting on the sofa while playing my PS3, but if you really want to immerse yourself in the game and have some money to burn, why not check out the X-Dream Gyroxus gaming chair?

It’s available for the Xbox 360, PC, PS3, PS2 and Nintendo Wii. The PS3 version is already available for pre-order at £399.95 (That’s $637). Let’s be honest here, immersion at that price isn’t going to get you much. But if you want a fancy new chair, this should be arriving in late August.

Batman Arkham City announced for 2011

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on August 5th, 2010

At last Batman fans, the sequel to the popular Batman Arkham Asylum has just been announced and it will be called Batman Arkham City. It will be available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in the fall of 2011. The game is being developed by Rocksteady Studios, Warner Bros Interactive and DC entertainment, and it will be set in Gotham’s new maximum security prison.

With the new Arkham in the city it should make for some interesting game scenarios, allowing even more characters to show up, so that you can bring them down.

And now a moment of silence for this PS3, which was destroyed in a fire

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 5th, 2010

It makes us sad to see consoles like this. I can only thank god that my own PS3 is still pristine and unburnt. Let’s bow our heads in silence for a moment.

Yes, this is what a PlayStation 3 looks like after a fire. Sniff. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry. No gamer should ever have to go through this. What kind of sick world would do this to a console? Everyone raise your PS3 controller high and hit the X button in a mock 21 gun salute.

PS Move Ultimate Boxing Gloves

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 2nd, 2010

You wanna do some boxing with the PS Move, but you are worried about throwing the controller through your HDTV. Perfectly understandable. That’s where CTA Digital’s glove peripheral will help. It keeps the controller attached to your palm.

The Ultimate Boxing Gloves feature velcro pouches that will secure your Move controllers while you punch. There is also a second level of velcro security in the adjustable wrist straps, which make sure that both glove and controller don’t go flying.

PS3 firmware 3.41 causing hard drive upgrade problems?

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on July 31st, 2010

Seems like folks are always having problems after they upgrade their PS3 firmware, but we can’t say we’ve experienced any problems. Firmware 3.41 seemed like a minor update that added a new “You May Like” section to the PlayStation Store, but some people are saying that it’s been causing problems for anyone trying to upgrade the hard drive in their console.

There’s a 30-page plus thread on the official PlayStation forums where folks are venting about issues upgrading their hard drive. They’ve been getting a “no applicable data” error after trying to install the update, which has left them with a non-working PS3 and, in some cases, a corrupted original drive.

PS3 to offer 3DS Style slider for 3D titles

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on July 22nd, 2010

Looks like Sony has been paying attention to what Nintendo is doing. They have announced that future stereoscopic 3D titles on the PS3 will come with a 3D slider that allows you to adjust the depth of 3D displayed by the game. It’s similar to how the 3DS handles 3D.

The adjustment can be made using the left analog stick, using a tilt. Do you have your 3D TV yet? I doubt the phenomenon will last long, but it will be interesting to see what happens.

Killzone 3 kills loading screens, no more waiting

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on July 19th, 2010

I have logged so many hours playing Killzone 2 it’s not even funny. The only sad part is waiting through the loading screens. They don’t last very long, but they take you out of the game. Some developers have camouflaged load screens with cut-scenes, or interactive options, but it’s still you waiting to get back into the game.

But now we have word that Killzone 3 is going give us a break from loading screens. It will be streamed completely, according to Herman Hulst, the managing director at Sony’s first party studio, Guerilla Games. So that means no loading screens!

Sony restricts 3D PS3 games to 720p

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on July 19th, 2010

Want to play stereoscopic PS3 titles in full high definition? Too bad. According to Joystiq, Sony guidelines won’t allow for 1080p 3D. They will run even native 1080p content at a lower 720p resolution, allowing enough processing for a smooth 60fps framerate and to reduce eyestrain.

3D Blu-ray movies are exempt from the specification and run at a slower, but larger, 1080p24. Native 1080p titles are hard to come by anyway, so you really can’t complain.

PS3 to get 3D YouTube and Blu-ray support

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on July 13th, 2010

Sony thinks we need more 3D so Sony’s 3D Blu-ray update for the PS3 console will arrive in September, a few weeks earlier than expected. There’s also another update in the works that will add support for 3D YouTube, and 3D photos that use the .mpo format.

Users will be able to capture 3D photos from supported cameras and view the content using a PS3 and 3D compatible TVs. Some of the supported cameras include the recently announced Cyber-shots with 3D photo capture.

White PS3 with new HDD capacities surfaces in Japan

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on July 6th, 2010

Sony saw the sales of its PS3 increase significantly, when the price was cut and the PS3 Slim hit the market. The console is still selling decently and fans in Japan will have a new color with a couple new features to choose from soon.

The new PS3 console will be offered in the existing black color and can be had in white as well. The console is replacing the current 120GB and 250GB HDDs with new 160GB and 320GB HDDs.

Nyko announces two new Raven PS3 controllers

Posted in Nyko by Conner Flynn on July 1st, 2010

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an uglier PS3 controller. Nyko is describing the feel of these controllers as “silky”. Even if that’s true, it’s like pouring perfume on a pig. The line includes a standard PS3 configuration as well as an Xbox 360 inspired “alternate” layout that flips the position of the left analog stick and d-pad for a more ergonomic feel, despite it’s looks.

Both connect wirelessly to your system via a USB dongle, and will cost $35 later this summer.

Sony PS3 firmware 3.40 released

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on June 30th, 2010

The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update 3.40 is now available, packed with such features as a Photo Gallery that lets you browse photos from Facebook or Picasa Web Albums and share them with friends on the PlayStation Network.

The Video Editor & Uploader tool can be found on the XMB and lets you edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3. No news of this firmware causing problems yet, which is always nice. We like smooth upgrades.
