Slimmer PS3 at E3?

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on May 13th, 2009

Slimmer PS3 at E3?Hot on the heels of that white US DualShock 3 this morning, there’s word that a revised PS3 is in the works. Rumor is that it’s the long-rumored slimmed-down redesign of the current console, not just a change in color or storage.

It makes sense as it would be cheaper to make and it might even include the rumored motion-sensing hardware. That would help sales.

White PS3 Dual Shock 3 surfaces in US

White PS3 Dual Shock 3 surfaces in USSomething interesting happened at a Walmart in Florida. A white Dual Shock 3 controller for the PS3 seems to have surfaced. It’s possible that it may be announced sometime later this year. Possibly at E3. So far, this color is only available in Japan, but does a white Dual Shock sighting mean a release in either North America or Canada?

Sony has responded and denied the existence of the white controller as well as plans for releasing it Stateside in a color that is not black. Maybe some guy just spray painted one and re-boxed it.

Logitech Harmony PS3 adapter launches this month

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on May 11th, 2009

Logitech Harmony PS3 adapter launches this monthWe told you back in March that Logitech is preparing the Harmony Adapter for the PS3, but at the time we didn’t have much info. Best Buy actually had it listed but was removed and is now cached. Anyway, it looks like the Harmony Adapter to be available in several weeks on May 31st in the USA.

The price isn’t bad for the luxury of not using the PS3 game controller as a remote. How many of you have been doing just that forever now?

Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 1 hits milestone

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on May 6th, 2009

codmappackI am a big Call of Duty fan and while I prefer Modern Warfare to the World War II setting, the most recent Call of Duty: World at War game was lots of fun. I don’t like to play my shooters on consoles personally; I stick to the PC for this type of game.

Lots of gamers prefer console systems though and Activision has announced today that Map Pack 1 for Call of Duty: World at War has hit a milestone. The pack has been downloaded over 2 million times combined on Xbox Live and the Sony Playstation Store.

Video game console x-rays

Video game console x-raysIf you’ve ever broken any bones, then you have likely seen an x-ray of your insides. But I bet you’ve never seen x-rays of your favorite game consoles. Gamers and Doctor Mario types will be happy to know that the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and Sony’s Playstation 3 (among others) have been x-rayed and are perfectly healthy.

Reintiji uploaded this set of x-rays to Flickr. It’s nerdy, it’s geeky and it’s even damn artistic. There’s some beautiful images in this gallery. Even the simple nunchuk. Wait. Do I see a problem with a torn rotator cuff on it’s analog stick?

UFC 2009 Undisputed demo now available

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on April 24th, 2009

ufc2009-sbI have been a big UFC fan since the sport debuted years ago with a much different format than we see today. I used to prefer boxing, but the UFC is much more entertaining to me. I have been waiting for the UFC game to debut since I first heard about it and now THQ is offering a playable demo.

THQ has announced that the playable demo is now available for Xbox 360 and PS3 owners to download. To celebrate UFC 97 held last weekend, the demo lets players fight an exhibition match between Chuck Liddell and Mauricio Rua.

EA bringing Dante’s Inferno game to PSP, Xbox, and PS3

dantesinferno-sbDante’s inferno was one of the books I had to read in literature class back in the day. I can’t say it was one of my favorite books and I wished it were a movie instead so I didn’t actually have to read it. Students today can crib for the quiz with a new video game from EA based on the book.

The game is based on part one of the Dante Alighieri classic, “The Divine Comedy.” The game will put players on a mission to move through the nine circles of hell including high school, college … I mean limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery.

Silver DualShock 3 controller spotted at GamestopYou’re probably getting mighty sick of that all-black DualShock 3 controller. Colorware is one option, but who wants to lay out that much money just to paint a controller? Luckily for you GameStop has your back. Assuming you like silver.

Today, the website has a listing for a silver version of the wireless SIXAXIS controller. It’s actually been available on the Japanese market forever, but those of us in North America can finally have a crack at it now.

XCM introduces Rumble Joystick for PlayStation 3Right after unleashing their Dominator joystick XCM has a new Rumble Joystick for PlayStation 3. It really isn’t all that different from the original. Except that it rumbles.

It’s being hailed as the world’s first PS3 joystick that rumbles all by itself. It features four memory buttons for programming all your macros as well as independent Rapid Fire and Turbo buttons. That’s not all. There’s also the all new XO Adapter for PS3, which adds support for macros, Rapid Fire and Turbo to any plain old Dual Shock or SIXAXIS controller.

Nielsen ranks game console usage for Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2009

Nielsen ranks game console usage for Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360Nielsen just released their report on console usage. I wish I could say that there were some shocking developments, but it all pans out pretty much how you might think. Almost. The report was conducted in December of 2008, with Nielsen keeping track of the use of the big three consoles.

According to their numbers, Xbox 360 users used their console the most: 11.4 percent of the time during the poll. The PS3 came next at 10.6 percent. The original Xbox came in next with 10.2 percent. while Wii owners gamed a sad 6.8 percent of the time… far less than that of even PS2 owners. What I fond surprising was that the Wii came in last place in total days used during their research. People don’t like hitting others in the nads with a Wiimote all the sudden?

Sony PS3 outsells the Wii in Japan

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2009

PS3 price cut coming soon? The unthinkable has happened. For the first time in 16 months, sales of the PS3 in Japan jumped 80% in the last five weeks of March compared to a year ago. At the same time, demand for the Wii went down by almost 63% to 99,335.

You can chalk up at least part of this to the release of a few new popular games like Resident Evil 5. Which helped up the PS3′s sales figures beyond the Wii’s for the first time since November a few years ago. It should also be noted that nearly everyone in Japan seems to already own a Wii.

Backstage with Guitar Hero launches on PS Home

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on March 26th, 2009

guitarheromobile-sbI am a big fan of video games and play both console and PC games. One of the coolest games for consoles so far has been Guitar Hero. Music games are huge right now and are helping bands and record labels sell tunes at a time when record sales are dropping.

Sony’s PlayStation Home was announced a long time ago and was ultimately delayed repeatedly before it finally launched last year. Part of PS Home is different realms that are branded with different games where fans can meet up. Activision has announced that the Guitar Hero Backstage area has now opened.

Wiimote for Xbox 360 coming this fall, PS3 version next year

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on March 25th, 2009

Wiimote for Xbox 360 coming this fall, PS3 version next yearInitially unveiled back in September of last year, the “Gametrak Freedom” motion controller for Xbox 360 and the PS3 returns after a makeover. It’s currently on display at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

It should be available this fall for the Xbox 360, the PS3 version will likely follow next year. The Freedom obviously closely resembles the Nintendo Wii remote. In fact, it just looks like a bad knockoff. It will ship with a USB-port base station connected to two wands that sit on either side of your TV. Unlike the Wii remote, the Freedom won’t require line-of-sight. Instead it will use “ultrasonic 3D positioning” to relay the remote’s position via pulses.

Rockstar says Max Payne 3 is coming this winter

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on March 24th, 2009

maxpayne3-sbI am an avid PC gamer and one of my all time favorite PC games was the original Max Payne. The shooter had an original story, great graphics, and some very innovative game play with its Bullet Time feature. The game was so popular it spawned a feature film recently that honestly sucked, not Marky Mark’s finest work.

Rockstar has announced that Max Payne 3 is coming this winter, we can probably expect the game in time for holiday shopping. Payne is still out for revenge for the death of his family in the third installment from the franchise.
