Ben Heck’s PS3 Slim laptop

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on October 1st, 2009

Ben Heck's PS3 Slim laptopOur favorite modder Ben Heck is at it again. The man never stops. I swear, he isn’t human. He just keeps churning out masterpieces. This time, it’s a sleek pin-striped laptop based on the new PS3 Slim that looks retro. Just like his Xbox 360 laptop, this one has a 17-inch Gateway 1775W screen at 1280 x 720 resolution.

Some other features include a storage space for the power cord, Blu-ray drive, and even an Iron Man Arc reactor-inspired fan grill. It could have been even smaller, but he wanted the 17-inch display.

PS3 Slim sells 1M units in 3 weeks

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on September 24th, 2009

ps3slim250I think most gamers knew that when the PS3 Slim was unveiled at the $299 price point that the other console makers would have to cut prices to compete. Microsoft shortly after matched the $299 price and Nintendo has now gone official with a new $199 price of the Wii.

If you have any doubts that the new price would mean robust sales for the PS3 Slim, let them go now. Sony announced that since the price cut went into effect three weeks ago the PS3 Slim has now sold 1 million units worldwide.

PS3 sales up 300% for first week after price cut in US

PS3 sales up 300% for first week after price cut in USLooks like Sony’s PS3 Slim is paying off for the company. Sales of PS3 hardware at “top retailers” jumped 300% for the first week of September compared to the week before the system’s price was cut to $299 for the “slim”.

Yes, people are actually buying the console. This news surely makes the folks at Sony feel all warm and tingly, but that’s not it for good news. According to a survey by GamePlan Insights, five of consumers’ top 10 most-wanted games are actually on the PS3 (Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, God of War III, Assassin’s Creed 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2).

Sony’s PS3 Slim gets ColorWare

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 13th, 2009

Sony's PS3 Slim gets ColorWareWell, that didn’t take long. ColorWare is bringing PS3 Slims to life with a rainbow of colors. They aren’t just colorizing the console, but the controller as well. You can customize the color of the PS3 logo, the top of the console, or the bottom. That way you can make it look super funky.

Once it’s been colorized, everything is high-gloss and scratch resistant, so it’s more than just a paint job. If you want to send yours in, it will cost you $149 or you can just buy one from them for $449.

Amazon warns of PS3 Slim shortages

Amazon warns of PS3 Slim shortagesIf you’ve been putting off that pre-order for the new PS3 Slim, you might want to get moving on it. Amazon US has warned of shortages for the new slim PlayStation 3 when the system launches next month. It’s limiting Slim sales to just one per person per household.

It’s five-Slims-per-person in the UK, which doesn’t seem fair to us. Sony in Europe isn’t worried, since it has “trucks and trailers” of the new console already on the road . Are they taking a page from the Wii playbook and spiking demand? We’re not sure. All we know is that you best get your order in.

Gundam to be the first Sony PS3 Slim bundleYou know that Sony loves those bundle packs. Well, it looks Gundam will be the first franchise bundle to hit the PS3 Slim. The Japanese only box will include Kidou Senshi Gundam Senki and the pack also includes product codes for FA-78-3 Full Armor Gundam and RX-81AS Assault Armor DLC packs, and an original HD animated Gundam film.

It will be available on September 3rd with the PS3 Slim, priced at 38, 359 Yen, which is 50 Yen less than the cost of the console and game separately. Yeah, if you did the math, that’s only about 53 cents. Thanks Sony.

Possibly fake video of the PS3 slim surfaces

Possibly fake video of the PS3 slim surfacesWe’ll leave it up to you to decide if this video is real or fake. It shows off a purportedly “stolen” PS3 slim at a street market in the Philippines. You decide.

If real, the PS3 Slim certainly looks like one sexy beast. Nothing too Earth-shattering here though. The video below suffers from glaucoma and shows a black plastic box with the new rounded-off logo style from the PSPgo.

Sony placing PS3 slim manufacturing orders for delivery in July?

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on June 30th, 2009

Sony placing PS3 slim manufacturing orders for delivery in July?News on the PS3 slim has been scarce since E3, but today’s rumor is that Sony has signed manufacturing agreements with both Foxconn and Pegatron to build the slimmed down console in time for a July delivery. That seems reasonable and lines up with stuff we’ve heard.

The crazy part of the rumor is the suggestion that the slim will be the last PS3 model of this generation, and that a next-gen console based on Sony’s motion controller is hitting in spring 2010. That part we aren’t buying. The PS3 is only now in its prime and Sony already said that the motion controller was for the existing console.

PSP Go! to be announced at E3, PS3 Slim is real

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on May 28th, 2009

Sony unveiling new PSP with slide-out buttons at E3?Ars Technica has a “very well-informed mole” that says that the rumored flash-based PSP Go! will be announced at E3. Then, later it will be sold right alongside the current model. As for the PS3 Slim, it’s real. And slim. But we don’t expect an announcement next week. We aren’t sure when.

Just a regurgitation of rumors we’ve already heard? Ars seems confident about the info. Either their mole is right or dead wrong. Their source says that the new PSP will be lighter and smaller possibly even cheaper. The PS3 Slim is just Sony doing what they do. They always miniaturize their consoles.
