Aliens to UK: We hate wind power, consider this a warningSomething caused this wind turbine in the UK to break. It could have been any of a million things, all very rational. But residents of the village of Conisholme, in Lincolnshire are having none of that. They know that aliens did it. And they don’t need any stinkin’ Men In Black, Mulder & Scully, Leonard Nimoy, Agents from Majestic or Alien corpses to prove it.

They claim that they saw bright lights in the sky “like an octopus’ tentacles” right around the time that the blades were damaged. Others claim that the damage was the result of a “cow-sized ice chunk” and even a “robot stealth bomber” was blamed. According to The Guardian, the mysterious lights were most likely from fireworks being shot off for one of their 80 year old residents. But what are you going to believe, something rational, or stories about aliens in robot stealth bombers?

After the hack, the weapon can fire about 500 rounds-per-minute. If you want one, the entire hack can be had in detail by clicking through. Be warned, the creators say that you’ll most likely fry the motor and melt a few components after you use it for a while. Awesome video below.

But as it changes, the petals slowly close and the flower keels over in its vase. In other words, you are a murdering bastard and it hopes you feel bad.

The TrickleStar PC Standby Power Saver is connected to a PC via your USB port. It will keep an eye on the computer’s power status continuously. A power extension cable will connect to your power strip with the rest of all your peripherals plugged in. When your PC is turned off, the TrickleStar’s current sensing circuitry will kill off ALL power to the peripherals, and vice versa when the PC is powered. The TrickleStar will be available in January.

Panasonic laptop fuel cell = 20 hours of power with methanolThis isn’t the first time we’ve told you about fuel cell technology in laptops. Back in July Lenovo was trying their hand at a prototype laptop using fuel cells. But Panasonic’s latest fuel cell breakthrough is the world’s smallest designed for notebooks. At 270cc, it’s about the same size as the existing lithiums. The key is that they use highly concentrated methanol, similar to what the military uses. Just 200cc will give you 20 hours of power. The prototype weighs just 320 grams.

If you prefer to charge your gadgets by fuel cell, they have a paperback-sized device that will get the job done. The company is expecting both to be available in 2012. Don’t worry, we shouldn’t need to carry around tanks of methanol.

Dream Car 123: Pyramid power is backBack in February, the Dream Car 123 was the latest in pyramid power cars. Still is, but now instead of cruising the streets at about 45 mph, with an 80-mile range, it’s got a far greater range these days. It also has bullet proof glass should the Pope want to get in on the action. They’ve also cut costs considerably. Back in February, pricing for the amazingly un-streamlined car was about $60,000 in supplies.

Fast forward to today, with the Dream Car now costing about $8,000 in materials with a mass production model being somewhere between $16,000 and $24,000. A 3.5 hour charge will give the car a 240 mile-range for about $5 in electricity costs. Sure, people will see you coming and call 911, thinking you’re an alien, but it’s well worth it should you buy one in the future or build one yourself.

The technology looks pretty promising and can be used in a variety of ways.

We put men on the moon for God’s sake.(That was a long time ago) Well, Duracell wants to make sure you always have plenty of power in your USB gadgets. You can get it in two different versions. One is designed to power your iPod and the other is for Blackberry. Both have a mini USB connector. The PowerSource Mini stores power with an internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. Apparently it has a second USB port that lets you charge another device at the same time. MAXON announced their free update for Cinema 4D in May and they’ve got a lot of fans. It has nearly 40 improvements over R9.5. Some people are crazy about it.

One of Maxon’s fans went to a lot of trouble to create a bike inspired by the technology. The Power Racer sports a Maxon themed body, two large jet engine looking cylinders and an awesome look. I don’t know about Maxon, but I know I want this bike/trike/jet thing in my garage.

The folks over at ElectraTherm have a 50-kilowatt machine that uses industrial waste heat for fuel, providing even more options for green energy. They’re calling it the ElectraTherm Green Machine, not to be confused with that Huffy Green machine you had as a kid.

Get this. With this unit, you can actually get back the money you spent within three or four years. That’s with electricity costing approximately three or four cents per kilowatt-hour. They use an organic Rankine cycle to heat liquids, then the liquids are transformed into a vapor, at which point it will move the turbine thus generating electricity. Looks like heat-to-electricity can be successful on a small scale, since this is capable of powering up to 40 homes at once.

Is Apple getting into solar power? It looks that way. According to Tradethenews.com, the company filed a patent involving placing solar cells on portable devices. This means that Apple’s iPhone or other devices could have photovoltaic cells stacked underneath LCD touch screens, which maximizes the area available for harnessing and soaking up the power of the sun.

According to the filing, performance info in regard to the performance of a device’s solar cells could be displayed on the main screen next to battery power, which makes sense. It could also appear on top of the actual cells, which could be displaying the Apple logo. Imagine less charging of devices. Then one day no charging at all. Nice.
