Posted in Pioneer by Shane McGlaun on September 22nd, 2009

avicfeeds-sgSome of the new vehicles on the roads today have navigation systems built in from the factory. Other vehicles don’t and the driver has to choose from in-dash navigation units or the type of navigation units that stick to the windshield. The in-dash sort is much better looking and Pioneer offers a while line of them.

Today Pioneer announced a new iPhone app that interacts with two of its high-end in-dash navigation devices including the AVIC-U310BT and the AVIC-Z110BT. Both of the navigation systems can interact with the iPhone app via Bluetooth.

Pioneer unveils tiny external optical drive

Posted in Pioneer by Shane McGlaun on July 29th, 2009

pioneerdvr-xd09-sbThe thing I dislike the most about using my netbook when I travel is that on many occasions when I am working I need an optical drive. My netbook and 99% of all others on the market lack an optical drive. The only option is to use an external drive, but most of those are too large and heavy.

Pioneer has announced a new external DVD/CD burner that it aimed at users of netbooks and other computers that lack optical drives called the DVR-XD09. The tiny drive looks more like a CD case than an optical drive.

pioneeravic_x910bt-sbThis morning I mentioned the new high-end Pioneer in-car nav device that sold for $1,600. That’s a lot of money for a car stereo to most of us. Thankfully, Pioneer has also announced a couple other nav units that are significantly cheaper, but not cheap by any means.

The two units are the Pioneer AVIC-X710BT and X910BT. Both units are dual din car radios with integrated navigation, stereo tuners and more. The navigation software offers several map view modes, simulated highway signs, and 3D icons for hotels and more.

pioneeravic_z110bt-sbPioneer has made some of the coolest car and home stereos around for a long time. When I was a kid, my day bought a new Pioneer stereo that cost him $500, which was big money back in the day. I promptly broke the turntable trying to scratch and spent a week or so being grounded. Ah, the good old days.

Pioneer is a bigger name in home theater and in-car electronics than home stereos today. The company has announced a slick new double DIN head unit that is the top-of-the-line the company offers. The Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT has a 7-inch motorized touchscreen that covers up the CD/DVD player and radio.

Pioneer unveils speedy BDR-2203 Blu-ray burner

Posted in Computer Components, Disc Drives by Shane McGlaun on April 15th, 2009

pioneerbdr-2203-sbI remember when Blu-ray drives for computers first starting coming to the market. The internal drives were over $1000 to purchase making them far too expensive for most of the people interested in them to afford. Thankfully, as things happen in the technology industry, prices have dropped significantly today.

Pioneer has announced a new Blu-ray writer called the BDR-2203 that can burn dual-layer Blu-ray discs at 8x speeds. The best part is that the internal optical drive retails for $249.99, about a quarter of what Blu-ray drives sold for not so long ago.

Pioneer VSX series works with your iPod

Posted in Pioneer Electronics by Conner Flynn on January 12th, 2009

Pioneer VSX series works with your iPodSome new Pioneer receivers were caught talking at CES 2009 about how they want to hook-up with iPods and how they require Apple’s standard USB data cable to do so. The VSX series receivers won’t kill you in the wallet too badly, and they have features that I’m sure you will want, including out-of-the-box compatibility with iPods.

Just hook up your iPod or iPhone to the USB jack in front of the receiver and you’re ready. All you need to do is kick back, listen and check out the album art. The receiver remote also offers full control of your iPod, but surprisingly,(This may hurt sales) there’s no support for playing video off your iPod except for the VSX-919 and VSX-1019AH, the two models on the high end of the budget-minded VSX line.

New Pioneer DVD Player Also Rips CDs

Pioneer DV-420V

DVD players don’t get too much love in the press today because they are pretty dull. The new Pioneer DV-420V, however, looks slightly more interesting than the average models being showed off at CES this year. It costs around $90.

The Pioneer DV-420V is notable as it sports a song encoding feature, letting users copy inserted audio CDs so the audio can be turned into MP3 files. These files are immediately transferred to an attached USB device. The same USB port can be used for playback of DivX Internet video and JPEG photos as well as multiple audio (WMA and AAC) and video (WMV) format files.
