Nintendo isn’t making a phone

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on April 3rd, 2011

You won’t be playing Super mario on a phone anytime soon. Nintendo has said that it isn’t planning to build a phone or license its games for third-party software platforms. They are going to focus on consoles and handhelds.

The high costs involved in cellular carrier partnerships are the main roadblock. That would affect the price of games. It just isn’t something Nintendo is looking at right now, but who knows? Maybe down the road, we will get a Nintendo phone. Just not now.

Rollerphone concept is a phone for your wrist

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on March 22nd, 2011

How about a phone that conveniently sits on your wrist? Alexey Chugunnikov has designed the Rollerphone concept and hopes that one day it becomes a reality. It is a wearable cell phone that looks like a wristwatch.

The Rollerphone has a retractable transparent screen at the base, so when you get a call, just pull out the screen. It features a media center, so you can watch videos, chat online, play games, read e-books and more. It will also project the time. One day this will be practical, but for now it is just a concept.

Nokia expects phone delays due to Japanese quake

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on March 21st, 2011

When we base so much of the world’s tech in one area of the globe, there are bound to be problems when natural disasters strike. Nokia has issued a statement on its operations in light of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The company’s end results for the quarter probably won’t be affected, but some gadgets may be delayed as the parts supply has been understandably interrupted. The company has pledged to do it’s best to work with suppliers inside and outside of Japan to work around the problem if they have to.

As you might expect, many technology companies have been affected by the Japanese quake and Tsunami. Some have had killed or wounded employees, or had their factories damaged etc. I think we would all just wish for them to get some stability at home and be safe before we worry about delays of our devices.

HTC Thunderbolt arriving next week?

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2011

After several delays and some missed release dates, the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon is starting to look more like a mirage than an actual phone. And according to a recently discovered Verizon chart, we may have the reason for the 4G LTE phone’s delay.

According to the chart, the Thunderbolt is only scheduled to arrive after the iPad 2, so that means it won’t happen this week. The iPad 2 comes out on Friday, so the earliest that we’ll see the Thunderbolt would be next week. However, Verizon hasn’t officially announced anything yet, so who knows?

Elfoid human-shaped phone from Japan is creepy

Posted in Mobile Phones by Reuben Drake on March 4th, 2011

The Telenoid R1 just got creepier. Elfoid was developed at Osaka University and with help from NTT DoCoMo and looks just like the Telenoid, even does pretty much the same thing, which is: giving you a human-like silhouette to talk to. At least this one can go in your pocket.

It tickles you when it rings, alerting you to the call. Just talk into its belly and it speaks to you, playing the voice of whoever’s on the line. It also moves and gestures as if you’re actually holding the person you’re conversing with. Weird.

Twitter chief says there will be no self-branded smartphone

Posted in twitter by Conner Flynn on February 15th, 2011

Facebook has some smartphones, so you might think that Twitter would jump on the wagon, but no. Not gonna happen. During a keynote speech at MWC, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo dispelled any notions that the company is working on Twitter-branded cell phone. Even though he says that 40 percent of all tweets originate from cell phones.

The CEO said that Android phones currently allow users to quickly send a photo they took to their Twitter followers and he’d like to see more of the same in other platforms. He’d also like more single sign-on experiences and more apps that allow tweeting directly without going to another app. Hey, we’d all like that.

Huawei shows off Ideos X3 phone, S7 Slim tablet

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on February 8th, 2011

Huawei is showing off two of the mobile devices it will bring to the Mobile World Congress show in Spain next week. The Ideos X3 smartphone and a new Ideos S7 Slim tablet. Both use the Android operating system. It looks like the hardware button from the face is gone, replaced with touch buttons. Otherwise, the seven-inch tablet looks nearly the same as the current one. The preloaded OS should be Android 2.2 or maybe even 3.0 rather than 2.1.

We don’t yet have any specs to go with the photos, but we do know that the Ideos X3 smartphone will also sport front and rear cameras and be available in at least four colors: red, blue, silver and black.

Facebook denies branded HTC phone

Posted in Facebook by Conner Flynn on January 27th, 2011

Once again Facebook has denied yet another rumor that a FB-branded handset is coming. There will be no facebook HTC device. Facebook addicts will just have to wait and hope.

Dan Rose, head of business development at the company, came forward with the following statement: “This is really just another example of a manufacturer who has taken our public APIs (application programming interfaces) and integrated them into their device in an interesting way. The rumors around there being something more to this HTC device are overblown.”

HTC to unveil two Facebook branded Android phones next month

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on January 26th, 2011

Last we heard, the official Facebook phone was just rumor. It was dismissed by Mark Zuckerberg himself after all. But that doesn’t mean that Facebook won’t license the brand to phone manufacturers. The latest rumors online suggest that they will do just that.

Rumor is that HTC will be unveiling two new Facebook smartphones at Mobile World Congress next month. These phones will feature the social network’s familiar color scheme and branding, with a modified version of Android built around and focusing on Facebook. One of the devices apparently has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, but we are short on other details.

Do you like the idea of paying for things by using your phone? What about coffee? Well, Starbucks has announced that its mobile payment test has concluded and that the service is now available in all stores around the country.

This means that you can now pay for your coffee if you use the iPhone or a Blackberry, using the official Starbucks App. The app can be funded using either your credit card or PayPal. Once your jittery coffee fueled hands get money in your app account, all you need to do is place your order and then hold your device with the barcode on the screen under the scanner at the counter. Pretty convenient no?

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on January 19th, 2011

Samsung will update it’s Chat series phone with a QWERTY addition called the Chat 350. This phone is heavily influenced by the chunky Samsung Champ 3300. They are both thick.

Some specs include a 4 inch QVGA touchscreen display (No OLED), Quad-band GSM connectivity without 3G, Bluetooth 2.1, music player, FM radio, 2MP camera, and MicroSD card support. It looks pretty lame as thick as it is. No word yet on pricing and availability.
