Philips iPill is a smart pill with a brain

Philips iPill is a smart pill with a brainPhilips’ Intelligent Pill is basically a robotic capsule that can handle a bunch of advanced medical functions wile inside of you. For one thing, knowing it’s location in your body. It’s capable of measuring acidity and temperature in the stomach, figures out it’s position and knows whether or not it should release medicine in that spot. The device uses a microprocessor, wireless radio and battery, along with a pump and deposit for the drugs.

The idea is that since it can deliver drugs in the exact spot needed, less drugs are required and that means fewer side effects. According to researchers, the prototype is ready for mass production. And your stomach. Let’s hope it’s not smart enough to lay nano-eggs in you and reproduce.

Philips wireless internet cam concept is creepy, could bite
Here’s a new wireless Philips concept by Flynn Product Design that offers something drastically different and ultra-awesome in a Sci-Fi kind of way. So awesome in fact that you’ll be watching it from the corner of your eye, waiting for it to ponce and suck out your insides.

If spiderwebs suddenly appear near this thing, get rid of it immediately because: A. It’s alive. Or B: It’s attracting little baby spiders that think it’s their mama, who will grow into big spiders. Creepiness aside, this might be the best webcam design yet. Soon spider cams will be no doubt be following us everywhere. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new overlords and I’m looking forward to working with you in return for my life.

Philips active crystals USB Happy Laura robot
Finally, more robot USB drives are hitting the market. Now we are getting more then we can handle. Some are even downright shiny like this one. Philips’ Active Crystal collection has been around for awhile. This time around it’s got Swarovski crystals in the 2008 range. The 2GB Robot Naughty Raymond, in black, is already available, and to give him some companionship, here comes the USB Happy Laura.

It’s set in white with sparkling crystals for the body and features for the face. The cute girlly bot even has ruby lips! Happy Laura has a 2GB capacity and will be available in Europe for $238. This is probably more glitz and glamor then you really want on a USB drive, but if you happen to be a rich robot loving gal, I guess it’s perfect.

Philips 52-inch 3D display is pure ecstasy for couch potatoes everywhere

Philips 52-inch 3D TVAt CES in January I wandered over to the NVIDIA meeting area and spent some time in the little gaming area NVIDIA had set up. Hands down the coolest thing on display was a big screen 3D TV that was being used to play some Need For Speed Pro Street. Trust me 3D rocks so hard for gaming you will want it.

The catch with the system NVIDIA was using is that you had to wear these geeky glasses straight out of the 1980’s to get the 3D effect. Philips announced a new 52-inch 3D monitor today that is auto-stereoscopic meaning you don’t have to wear glasses to view in 3D. Sign me up!

Philips underwear: Blood pressure monitoring system
Personally, there’s only one piece of hardware I want riding down below, but unfortunately hardware in your undies may become the norm one day. All I ask is that they leave room for the main package I’m hauling and that they’re comfortable. For some unknown reason, Philips is looking to create a pair that monitors your blood pressure.

A recent patent application from the firm shows off a “wearable” system, but they do point out that “it is particularly suitable for implementation in a continuously wearable undergarment with integrated measuring sensors or electrodes, so as to be directly in contact with the subject’s skin.” You know, I’m not too sure about all of this. I mean, don’t outfit our drawers with something that’s going to stunt our growth. (Insert George Costanza “shrinkage” joke here)

Philips flat micro theater has style
The Philips MCD299 will cost you just $348, which is a bargain. This thing has style oozing from every inch of it’s surface. It’s got a four-disc changer for uninterrupted music and DVD movie playback, a motorized sliding door, and Moto Razr-type metallic buttons.

JPEG, MP3, and WMA via CD or USB. Plus it has a 140-watt digital amplifier driving a pair of flat-panel speakers with bass-centric subwoofer. For the price you get an awesome looking theater. While it may not have everything, you won’t grow tired of it’s looking at it.

philips-toaster.jpgHow much power does one really need to toast a piece of bread? Philips seems to think the answer is a lot - 1200 watts to be exact - and wants to sell you its HD2618 toaster for around $120.

Philips 9@9j has a AAA backup battery

Posted in Philips by Conner Flynn on February 14th, 2008

AAA backup battery
Even though we don’t see them in most devices, AAA batteries can be pretty darn useful, aside from powering remote controls and toys. Philips thinks so too, that’s why the Philips Xenium 9@9j has a AAA battery slot at the base. This is very likely the first cellphone that supports a AAA battery. It supposedly gives it up to three hours of talk time. It still has the standard lithium ion rechargeable battery, but the AAA is a backup.

It does add some bulk, but what is a backup worth to you? The 9@9j should be around in April. The technology is from the Israeli firm Techtium, and they are calling it Backupower. If your main battery goes dead, the backup battery takes over.
