Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on October 5th, 2010

This 27-inch Samsung monitor is the first LCD to tout an amazing 1ms response time, halving the previous best in this category of 2ms. Pretty impressive. Not sure it will be noticeable though in daily use. With that great response time however, there is also a lack of stand adjustment and Samsung’s Touch of Color enclosure.

Other features include 1920 x 1080 resolution, 300 nits of brightness, HDMI input, and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio. You can pick up the Samsung P2770FH later this month for just $400.

Be like Uhura, not like Spock

Posted in Sci-Fi by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

Spock always thought he was so smart, but he could be pretty simple-minded sometimes. Just look at the way he hunches over his monitor. He never sat, or adjusted his monitor.

Uhura was wise and sat relaxed at her monitor, casually avoiding the Captains flirting. This comparison is used by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to encourage their members to take ergonomics seriously. This poster was pasted in the bathroom of the facility.

3M Shows off USB 3.0 powered monitor

Posted in 3M by Conner Flynn on June 9th, 2010

We’ve seen USB-powered displays, but those weren’t powered by USB 3.0. 3M has unveiled some new monitor technology, by showing off an 18.5-inch 1366 x 768 pixel display powered by dual USB 3.0 ports. USB 3.0 has 5Gbit bandwidth, so it is much better at high-definition pictures, compared to the 480Mbits for USB 2.0.

Two USB 3.0 ports are used because a single USB 3.0 port offers 7W, while this monitor needs 8W. It’s looking like we will all be using USB displays like this in the future.

Samsung USB powered monitor

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on June 1st, 2010

On the plus side, this monitor is USB powered. Even if it isn’t very portable. Samsung showed off the 18.5-inch LCD monitor a few days ago. It connects through USB and is powered by USB. So how did Samsung manage to accomplish this? According to the company, they did it “by improving the transmittance of the panel and the luminance efficiency of the backlight”. In other words, by dramatically lowering the monitor’s power consumption to as low as 6.3-watts.

Samsung plans on releasing some products just like this by next year. Here’s another drawback though. The monitor is only good for 30,000 hours, compared to 50,000 hours for conventional displays. I guess that isn’t too bad since this is for specialized needs.

Bayer Didget blood glucose monitoring system DS game

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on April 27th, 2010

It isn’t cool or convenient for kids to check their blood glucose levels normally, but kids love videogames, so Bayer’s Didget is the perfect solution. It’s based on the company’s Contour glucose meter, but instead of connecting by USB it’s shaped like a Game Boy cartridge, which let’s kids put it into a Nintendo DS or DS Lite.

Kids can upload their scores to a custom game to unlock new characters and items, but the One problem with this plan is that it isn’t compatible with the DSi or the XL, so it is already obsolete.

idisplay app turns your ipad into a wireless monitor

Posted in iPad accessories by Conner Flynn on April 4th, 2010

Here’s an interesting iPad app that turns your iPad into a secondary monitor. Shape Services iDisplay connects your iPad to your Mac desktop and lets you wirelessly extend your screen onto your iPad’s display.

It will also work on the iPhone, but I’m not sure why you would want to use your iPhone for this. Right now it’s version 1.0 product, so I’m sure they have some bugs to work out, but the users who have problems are using iPhones. It’s a great idea.
