British Red Phone Box mobile phone

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on July 20th, 2009

British Red Phone Box mobile phoneBad teeth and Monty Python aside, nothing says British like a red phone box. The phone itself is fully functional and comes with a 65K color TFT screen, a camera, SMS, MMS and GPRS/WAP 2.0. Sure, those specs aren’t great, but it’s a red British phone box. What did you expect?

We really would have preferred a blue version. At least that way, it would be very Doctor Who. They really missed out on that idea. It could have all of the geeky sounds and everything. Oh well. You will get some early 00’s polyphonic style ringtones. 20 to be exact. Stuff like God Save the Queen and other British tunes.

Jupiter Jack turns car stereo into hands free kit

jupiterjackI have never purchased anything off a TV commercial like the ones the spokes people always tell you to call now for. Most of the stuff they peddle looks like junk to me. The company behind some of those oddball products — Telebrands — has announced a new gadget that works with mobile phones.

The device is called the Jupiter Jack and plugs into the headphone port of mobile phones. The idea is that the device will send the audio from your calls over the cars speaker system so you can hear while driving without having to hold the phone.

Amazon launches AmazonWireless

Posted in Amazon by Shane McGlaun on July 10th, 2009

amazonwirelessI am not a big fan of buying new mobile phones. I am with AT&T and I think that the sales people at my local store are mentally deficient. Every time I have ever been in the store it takes a good hour, most of which is waiting for one of the goons to stop harassing the person there before me to buy a memory card and a case with their phone.

Next time I need to upgrade, I might just go online and order. Amazon has launched a new wireless phone offering called AmazonWireless, which is in beta right now. The site offers mobile phones and plans for sale without having to mess with rebates and all phones include free two-day shipping.

Bolt Mobile browser grows by leaps and bounds

boltbrowser-sbWhen it comes to browsing the Internet on a mobile phone, not all browsers are created equal. I hate the type of mobile browser that breaks a site out of its PC format and gives you a big long page of text and links to read.

The latest version of Bolt mobile called Beta3 launched and in the first 24 hours the new version was available the browser rendered over 1 million pages. According to the company behind the browser, it has been growing at a steady rate of 50% per month since it debuted in February.

Simvalley PICO RX-80: Credit card sized mobile phonePhones keep getting smaller, but this is ridiculous. This is one of the smallest mobile phones we’ve seen. It’s dubbed the Simvalley PICO RX-80 and it’s just 1cm thick, making the Simvalley PICO RX-80 about the size of a credit card.

Due to the size it isn’t going to have many great features. It sports a 1.2 inch LCD screen with a resolution of 96 x 49 and the phone itself measures a tiny 50 x 800 x 10mm. Some other specs include: Dual-band for GSM 900/1800 networks, Backlit buttons and display Backlit screen and keys, reminder, hidden identity, speed dialing, keypad lock, and 32MB Internal Memory.

samsunggloss-sbThere are so many cellular phones on the market that there are devices to suit every need and taste. Many women want a phone that offers good looks in addition to functionality. Samsung and US Cellular announced today that the mobile provider was getting the Samsung Gloss handset.

The Gloss looks like a makeup compact to me and has a roughly square design that measures 2.55-inches x 2.94-inches x 0.82-inches and has a 2.2-inch QCIF TFT LCD screen. The handset is available in pink or charcoal colors.

LG preparing mobile phone with 12 MP camera

LG preparing mobile phone with 12 MP cameraLooks like LG will be releasing a new 12-megapixel cell phone later in the year. Take it with a grain of salt, but it could very well happen. 12-megapixels will likely replace the new 8-megapixel camera phones that are all over the market.

Sure, the lens isn’t up to par with those of a standard digital camera, but it’s always a march forward. Lens tech will just have to catch up. Who cares if those extra MP are useless?

AT&T GoPhone gets unlimited calling plan

Posted in AT&T by Shane McGlaun on May 11th, 2009

gophone-sbMost of us will agree that contracts required to get mobile phones today are not how we would prefer things work. I always wanted cellular service that worked like my old landline. I pay for what I use and if I don’t like the service, I change at will.

The closest we get to that sort of service with mobile phones are the pay-as-you-go plans like the AT&T GoPhone. AT&T has announced that the GoPhone now has an unlimited calling option that lets you call all you want for $3 per day.

Ghost Pigeon: Untraceable calls and texts on your mobile phone

Posted in Security by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2009

Ghost Pigeon: Untraceable calls and texts on your mobile phoneAre you doing stuff that you shouldn’t be doing? If so, then you probably don’t want to get caught doing that stuff. We don’t want to know. But the Ghost Pigeon can help you keep things on the down low. It’s a piece of cloaking software that masks all incoming and outgoing calls and text messages on your handset so people can’t examine your phone and discover who you’ve been in contact with or even when.

It’s not all shady stuff. It’s likely useful for employees searching or interviewing for a new job on their company phone, or for CEOs negotiating a golden handshake and stuff like that. I mean, not everybody is a drug dealer or a smuggler etc.

Duracell announces USB car charger

duracellusbcharger-sbOut of all of the gadgets I have laying around my home, lots of them charge via USB. My iPhone uses USB to charge and all of the MP3 players around do as well. That means that if I want to take the gadgets in my car with me on a trip all I really need is a USB charger.

Duracell has announced a new USB charger designed to sit completely inside the DC outlet in your car. The device is low profile and when plugged in and when ready to use the USB port glows blue. Duracell says that the device can charge the iPhone and any other USB item.

Mobile phone-controlled vacuum cleaner

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2009

Mobile phone-controlled vacuum cleanerSouth Korean telecom company KTF just announced a cleaning robot that can be controlled by a 3G cellphone. The Roomba can’t do that, now can it? The robot is called the CW100 and is the result of a collaboration with Microbot.

It’s a “smart” vacuum, like the Roomba. It can be controlled by phone, which the Roomba can’t, unless modded to do so. It uses an onboard video camera to send live images to the mobile phone, so if you see an untidy spot, the user can remotely control it using the keypad and clean it up.

PinkTooth Bluetooth headset for the ladies

Posted in Accessories by Shane McGlaun on March 30th, 2009

pinktoothheadset-sbMost of the Bluetooth headsets that you can get for mobile phones on the market today are black or silver things that look like they were designed for guys. There are a few Bluetooth headsets around that are pink or look like something women would like, but not many.

A company called ChicBuds and announced a Bluetooth headset specifically for women called the PinkTooth headset. The device connects to any Bluetooth-enabled phone and is good for 200 hours of standby time and six hours of talk time.

Chairman phone for the rich and geeky

Posted in Mobile Phones by Shane McGlaun on March 26th, 2009

chairmanphone-sbIt doesn’t matter if you are a homeless New Yorker or an uber rich businessperson; most of us have one gadget in common — the cell phone. There are few people today that don’t have a mobile phone, though the type of phones we use varies greatly. Many geeks carry the iPhone and your mom may have the cheap phone that comes free with her plan. The mega rich also have their own type of cell phone.

Mobile phones like the Vertu Signature Dragon have been available for the elite for a while. A new handset is now available for the well-heeled buyer called The Chairman. The device is from SCI Innovations and watchmaker Ulysse Nardin. The main design feature of the phone is a functional watch rotor. The phone is offered in solid gold and steel/gold versions as well as all steel versions.
