Netbooks are wildly popular today and odds are many of your friends have them. If you want to be different and stand out from the pack, albeit in a less functional way, a MID might be for you. Sure, they lack a real keyboard, but with Bluetooth, you can carry and external with you.

Dynamism has unveiled a new MID with a tablet form factor called the Viliv X70 series. The device is a touchscreen tablet that runs on netbook internals with an Intel Atom CPU running at 1.33GHz. The MID has a 7-inch WSVGA LCD with a resolution of 1024 x 600 and haptics touch feedback technology.

MIDs and mobile phones are growing in capability and performance all the time. Intel launched its Moorestown MID platform not so long ago that promises higher performance computing in portable devices with low power consumption.

At Computex this week Elektrobit (EB) has unveiled a reference design for a MID that is built on the Intel Moorestown platform. The design is targeting wireless and PC OEMs looking for a MID design that can be customized to meet their needs.

I like netbooks, I happen to think that the tradeoff of screen size and some power for portability is well worth it for the way I use a notebook. That said I think going below an 8-inch or 9-inch screen size is too much of a compromise, but some folks want even more portability in their web access device.

The MID walks the line between a netbook and smartphones like the iPhone and Gigabyte has an interesting new MID called the M528. The M528 was seen back in June, but Gigabyte has updated the specs. Running on Linux the device has a 4.8-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 800×480 that is touch sensitive.

The Gigabyte M528 finally has a price tag, retailing for $750 in Taiwan and it will be released there in late July. The features remain the same since it’s unveiling at Computex 2008. You get an 800Mhz Silverthorne/Poulsbo processor, 800 × 480 resolution touch screen, 3 mp auto-focus camera and 4GB SSD, GPS navigation, and 3G connectivity. It comes with the suite of different apps that include Firefox 3, Skype, Pidgin IM, and OpenOffice 2.4 plus others. Good news for those who have been waiting.
