Today Dell filled out its mainstream notebook line with the Inspiron 17. The desktop notebook is rocking the same 16:9 aspect ratio display and thinner, more efficent LED backlighting as newer Inspirons but, matching its 17.3-inch size, has a higher 1600×900 resolution as standard. Processors are also faster and scale up to a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo.

The base price is just $499 with by a 2GHz Pentium dual-core, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Intel integrated video and Vista Home Basic. The battery is a minimal 4-cell pack. Buyers can choose Home Premium as well as up to 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, Blu-ray, a 6-cell battery and a dedicated 256MB Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics core.

Sure, lights on your notebook are nothing new, but they don’t really do anything useful. This mod, on the other hand, puts a 3-color LED on an Asus Eee 901 that shows you when you have incoming messages. All it takes is an extra microprocessor and some custom scripts.

The RGB LED displays a different color depending on whether it’s email, an IM or a tweet. We can only hope that this opens up the eyes of product designers. It would be nice to see something like this on an HP, Acer or Dell.

The Samsung XL2370 boasts what Samsung calls a “finger-slim” design, with high-end features like a 2ms response time and 1080p resolution (1920×1080 pixels) as well as a 40% power savings. Samsung is calling it eco-friendly because it is lighter to transport and should require less materials to produce.

How well those claims work in the real world, we aren’t sure. This monitor will come out in Korea this month, then will make its way to the rest of the world at some point. No word if the US is on their list yet.

This LED clock from British designers Jimmy Loizeau and James Auger is a morbid flycatcher and a timepiece in one. Think of it like a clock with spider sensibilities. It harvests insects on a sticky roller that’s covered in flypaper, then drops the corpses into a microbial fuel cell.

The dead bug is digested by the bacteria inside, and the chemical changes power the clock. Pretty neat and disgusting.

This LED Nessie Table Lamp was recently spotted. Skeptics will tell you that it doesn’t exist, but the picture is proof enough for me. It’s completely posable and you can point it in just about any way you want. It runs on 4 AA batteries so you can take it with you anywhere or give it to the kids as a night-light to install terror in them.

Just squeeze its head to turn it on or to switch on the multicoloured LEDs. It also comes in a range of patterns, including the rare leopard print Nessie. Only $34.85. It has a price, which is proof that it exists.

I’m sure everyone’s heard of this, the good ol’ Sound Activated LED Equalizer T-shirt. For those that have are out of the loop (don’t worry, it happens to us all sometimes), all you have to do is put this on your body, and music makes it lose control. Well, pending that you have 4 “AAA” batteries, that is.
This shirt is not for doing homework in, though. Unless by “homework” you mean gettin’ super duper crunk. The LEDs on the panel respond to particular frequencies (primarily bass hits), so it’s not exactly the most versatile equalizer. But I think that feature makes it more interesting, as when there are dramatic pauses in percussion, they are matched by the LEDs on the shirt. It’s hard to find this shirt for under 20-30 bucks, so I hope you appreciate that today Dillyeo is offering it for 15$, after shipping.

Energizer is upping flashlight design. They’ve released the Hard Case LED Tactical 2AA 2nd generation handheld light that’s tough enough to work in just about any outdoor environment. It’s specifically built for rough use outdoors in fact.

Don’t worry about dropping it. It can handle 15-foot falls without a problem, and while they were at it they made it waterproof. It uses LEDs of course and can even be powered by a single AA battery. Included are blue, red and green LEDs so you can see various things in the dark.

You might remember that Luxeed LED multicolor keyboard we featured last August. It’s back with a new update for 2009. Mac and Linux users can now get in on the action with the Luxeed U5 keyboard. It’s like a rave for your fingers.

It improves on the original Luxeed by adding multi-platform support. The Luxeed L5 also makes changes to the LED system to reduce ghosting. Plus they’ve added a firmware updater utility and improved the responsiveness of the keys.

Samsung just released three new 240Hz LED TVs, which are competing with LG’s 240Hz LH90 LED TVs. Known as the PAVV 8000, 7000 and 6000 series, these TVs are compatible with YouTube, DLNA, and feature a USB 2.0 port to display both photos and DviX videos from USB flash drives.

The Samsung PAVV 8000 series will be available in 46 and 55 inch and will be available in the US in May as well as Europe and Southeast Asia. Sadly, the specs for the PAVV 7000 and 6000 series are still unavailable. They must not be all that awesome.

iHouse has released the SmartFaucet that comes equipped with face recognition technology that can recognize the person’s face and then automatically turn on the water to the preferred temperature and flow f that person. It features a touchscreen display located on top of the faucet that can even be used to check your email, the calendar, etc.

It will give you something to do while shaving. Like read all that erectile dysfunction stuff in your inbox. The integrated LEDs illuminate to show the temperature, with transition from blue to red for higher temperatures.

Battery Snaps are an interesting little gadget that turns a regular 9volt battery into a single-LED flashlight, by snapping onto the top. Just snap it on and use the button on top to turn on the LED light. Instant flashlight.

When the LED light stops working, that’s when it’s time to replace the battery. For $5, it comes with a 9 volt battery included. It isn’t going to light up a whole room or anything, but these would be handy to have for power outages.

Looking for a pair of speakers to impress your friends with? These Kenwood SP0001 transparent speakers should do the trick. Maybe. I’m not sure. They’re cool, but something about them is very washer/dryer like. If you like transparent washers/dryers then this is gold.

They must look better than they sound however, with a disappointing 10Wx2ch, with 8Ω power, yet costing €765. It comes with a matching pair of stands with white and blue LEDs.

When was the last time you saw a streetlamp as unique as this one? It’s cool just the way it is, but when you realize that all four wings have LEDs in them, you see it’s true potential. Not just as art, but as a crime prevention tool as well thanks to an attached camera.

It lights up the night streets and keeps a watchful eye on those below. There’s also a sea gull and butterfly as well. They were developed by a Korean company and can be found across Seoul and soon in Tokyo as well.

You might remember, we told you about the LED message mouse last October. But since all of the other kids are slinging it around the net, we just wanted to brag and say we covered it back then. It’s a standard USB mouse, with some extra special features.

It can also display messages with the built in LED display. Up to 12 characters, and it also has a built in fan to keep your hands nice and cool if you have sweaty palms. I don’t wanna know why. I’m just saying.
