Mickey Mouse Transformer hits Japan

Mickey Mouse Transformer hits JapanSome people are obsessed with Disney. Some not so much. But the makers of this new Transformer toy from Japan clearly love both Mickey Mouse and Transformers. I admit, when we first spotted this toy in the prototype phase, at our robot sister site Botropolis, we weren’t all that impressed.

Then when we saw the first pics with some color, we still weren’t that thrilled and figured it was geared toward chumps who would buy anything Disney. However, now that we see the final product, I have to admit that it looks cool. And I’m no Mickey Mouse fan. It was on display at this week’s Tokyo Toy Forum 2009.

Wii food delivery channel for Japan

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on December 28th, 2008

Wii food delivery channel for JapanI’m sure you have all gotten nice and slim using the Wii Fit, which is good, because much like a Thanksgiving turkey in September, Nintendo now has a plan to fatten you up. Probably so you’ll be more inclined to buy Wii Fit 2 and work it all off again. Beginning this spring, Nintendo will intro the Food Delivery Channel in Japan, just like how TiVo users can order Pizza Hut.

Wii users will be able to place orders from Demae-can.com where they can buy sushi, hamburgers and all kinds of stuff fit for a dinner in front of the Wii. It goes further then just food ordering though. You order the food and then if you like, your Wii will set the mood music. It can even pick a meal and have it sent to you randomly.

Video distribution coming to Japan Wiis in 2009

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on December 25th, 2008

Video distribution coming to Japan Wiis in 2009Beginning early next year, the Nintendo Wii will be joining the other consoles in offering a video distribution service through the Wii. According to Nikkei business daily, the Big N will team up with Dentsu, Inc. to offer cartoons and other programs created specifically for the service.

Somehow we don’t see this service being free, since they are talking about a “new revenue stream,”. Wii owning video lovers may be in store for a big let-down. Let’s not forget about the console’s 512MB memory limit and it’s 480p maximum resolution. The probably lame service will launch in Japan and then head overseas later.

Tomy Hi-Kara portable Karaoke box

Posted in Karaoke by Conner Flynn on December 23rd, 2008

Tomy Hi-Kara portable Karaoke boxThe Japanese love gadgets. They love Karaoke even more. It’s almost as if Karaoke keeps Godzilla from attacking. Probably because his ears can’t take it. If that’s the case, they have another salvo in their Godzilla war. The Hi-Kara portable karaoke machine from Tomy. You get a 2.4″ LCD display that dsplays the song’s lyrics, while a headset can be used by a pair of singers at the same time.

All of the songs will need to be downloaded onto a proprietary cartridge from the Hi-Kara website though, so that limit the number of duets that you can actually perform. The Hi-Kara portable karaoke device will retail for about $180. Available in white or pink colors.

First Blu-ray / DVD hybrid disc announced in Japan

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on December 20th, 2008

First Blu-ray / DVD hybrid disc announced in JapanIt took long enough didn’t it? But it has arrived. The same benefits of HD DVD have finally made it over to Blu-ray. A Blu-ray/DVD hybrid disc. It features a single-layer of Blu-ray on one side and a standard DVD on the very same side (You won’t have to flip it).

As you are used to hearing, it’s appearing first in Japan, with something called Code Blue emergency helicopter doctor Blu-ray BOX as the first hybrid title. It’s a shame we have to miss that one. No word yet on when or if we will see this technology in the states, but a little backwards compatibility never hurt anybody.

Mamoru, Japan’s creepy robot assistant for the eldery

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on December 15th, 2008

Mamoru, Japan’s creepy robot assistant for the elderyMamoru is a small elder-care robot created by the University of Tokyo that sort of resembles an old granny, complete with little plastic bun. It’s designed to help the elderly or disabled remember where they left their remote control or their slippers, and even offers polite reminders when it’s time to take their medicine. Mamoru recognizes objects by using a wide-angle camera to study the room. Image recognition software tells it what each object is, so it knows where everything is.

Why do we need creepy robots to look after our elderly? Do they not already fear one creature known as the Grim Reaper? Are we trying to creep them into the grave? No. No we are not. There are simply not enough caregivers compared to the number of those who need care. So, we must take our chances and hope that these robots do not torment them and start hiding the meds rather then helping to find them.

Kisai Tenmetsu Tokyoflash watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on December 9th, 2008

Kisai Tenmetsu Tokyoflash watchTenmetsu is the latest addition to the brand new line of Kisai timepieces from Japanese watch importer Tokyoflash. The idea behind this one is that with three LEDs positioned beneath each lens, you’ll get a transition between LED colors, creating an unusual look. And it does. As usual Tokyoflash comes up with a unique design.

This one is nice and light weight because it’s made from aluminum. You can get one in either silver or black. So how do you read the time on this one? The time and date are shown in sequence by color. Red LEDs indicate 15 units, amber LEDs indicate 5 units and green LEDs indicate 1 unit, a combination of which present hours, minutes, months and date. Still confused? Me too.

H-Bouya USB toy is creepy, confusing, bald

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on December 8th, 2008

H-Bouya USB toy is creepy, confusing, baldThe latest USB toy to come out of Japan is named H-Bouya. We’ll be honest here, it leaves us with a creepy, not safe feeling, mixed with confusion and please don’t stab us with a usb stick.

Okay, so what does it do? We are not really sure. One thing we know is that it turns red and blinks its eyes every time you hit the letter “H”. For some reason. Mostly it will just give you a crazy-eyed staring, mental beat-down without moving a limb. The objective may be to put you in a coma and report back to HQ via USB. When enough of us are asleep at our desks, it’s plan will be enter the next phase, whatever that is.

Limited Edition Wall-E Roomba really sucks

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on November 10th, 2008

Limited Edition Wall-E Roomba really sucksWhen you think about what a limited edition Wall-E Roomba should be, you probably picture a Roomba with those cute Wall-E eyes attached, Wall-E’s squar-ish body. Maybe add some voice effects. How awesome would it be to have a Wall-E Roomba?

Turns out, not very awesome at all. It’s being sold in Japan and it amounts to no more then a crappy sticker attached on top. For the price of $850. That’s $550 more then what a standard 530 costs here in the U.S. For shame Roomba. For shame.
