SlingPlayer for iPhone: $30, WiFi only

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on May 12th, 2009

SlingPlayer for iPhone: $30, WiFi onlyThe SlingPlayer app for iPhone will finally be available tomorrow. There has been a lot of discussion as whether or not AT&T (or other carriers) would let this bandwidth sucking app use their networks. Well, looks like the carriers had it their way and the Slingplayer app will work only with WIFI on iPhone.

If you want to use SlingPlayer on 3G, you’ll need a Blackberry or any other smartphone. AT&T complains that SlingPlayer would bring its wireless network down, while they’ve been trying to push their bandwidth-hog services like AT&T mobile TV. Which costs $30 per month. Thanks but no thanks.

Posted in Google by Shane McGlaun on May 11th, 2009

tmobileg1-arsAndroid got off to a very slow start with the only handset being offered for a long time being the T-Mobile G1. Android has its share of early teething woes that were fixed for the most part with updates and patches. Android is now picking up steam in the market.

Analytic firm Strategy Analytics says that this year Android smartphone shipments will grow by 900%, making it the fastest growing mobile OS in the market. The second fastest growing Os is expected to be the iPhone OS growing 79% over the year.

Missouri journalism students required to buy iPhone or iPod touch

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on May 9th, 2009

iphone3g-sbBeginning this fall, journalism students at the University of Missouri, Columbia will need to add an iPhone or an iPod touch to their already expensive shopping carts. It seems ridiculous, but there is a method to this madness.

Brian Brooks, associate dean of the journalism school, told the Columbia Missourian that the requirement “will not be enforced, however, and there will not be a penalty for students who chose not to buy an iPod touch or iPhone.”

iPhone case with a kickstandWe’ve covered our share of iPhone cases. Some are wood, some have a battery etc. But this thing here may just be the first iPhone case with a genuine kickstand.

Just like your bike, it will allow your iPhone to stand by itself. The iClooly clip stand can also be used to clip the phone comfortably on your clothing and will also serve as a handle for those who need a handle on their iPhone.

iPhone app lets users print to Epson printers

Posted in Epson by Shane McGlaun on May 4th, 2009

iphone3g-sbThere have been a few occasions when I was getting email on my iPhone that I wanted to print the document. You can synchronize the document and then print it from your computer, but directly printing a doc from the iPhone would be much easier and add some value to an Epson printer.

Epson has announced a new application for the iPhone and iPod touch that allows users to print documents, emails, and even images directly to an Epson printer from their phones. The app is called the EuroSmartz Print & Share App.

Microsoft and Verizon reportedly working on an iPhone competitor

Posted in Microsoft by Conner Flynn on April 28th, 2009

Microsoft and Verizon reportedly working on an iPhone competitorHere we go. Yet another iPhone killer. How many does that make? If the Wall Street Journal’s report is to be believed, Verizon is currently in talks with Microsoft regarding a project with the codename “Pink”. Pink will be a Microsoft-designed iPhone rival with a multimedia focus and, very likely a big touchscreen.

According to the report, Microsoft’s version of the iPhone will also feature a tweaked version of Windows Mobile OS with “new software capabilities.” Microsoft is apparently involved with the design of the phone, while a third party will build it.

Verizon and Apple working on possible iPhone deal

Posted in Verizon by Shane McGlaun on April 27th, 2009

iphone3g-sbI love my iPhone, but I don’t feel the same way about the AT&T network the device is tied to. The biggest issue as a user of AT&T’s rural networks is that 3G coverage is very lacking and plain EDGE service can be hard to get in many locations while Verizon and Alltel offer seamless coverage in the same areas.

Back in 2007 when the iPhone first launched we mentioned that Verizon had passed on the iPhone when Apple asked them about working together on the device. According to USA Today Apple and Verizon are in talks again about bringing the iPhone to the Verizon network. The newspaper cites high-level sources that say the two companies are in discussions to bring a LTE version of the iPhone to the Verizon network.

Handmade wood iPhone 3G cases

Handmade wood iPhone 3G casesLove Apple or hate them, I think we can all admit that the iPhone is one of the classiest looking phones. So why not class it up a bit more and add some sophistication in the form of a handmade wooden case? Etsy seller Substrat has created some really lovely cases. They’re all shaped and sanded to perfection and compliment your iPhone’s design. They will hold it snugly and keep it safe.

Sadly, you won’t be able to use any of the buttons. But that’s the price you pay for awesome looks. The price is about $84.99. These are probably the best wood iPhone cases we’ve seen yet.

Apple App Store hits a billion downloads

Apple App Store hits a billion downloadsiPod Touch and iPhone owners have been busy over the last nine months. Who would have thought back then that you guys would buy so many apps. Of course it’s hard to resist such gems as the wobbly boob app and iBeer. Obviously it doesn’t take much to get the public’s attention.

Now it’s up to Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android, BlackBerry and the rest to catch up. If we can offer some advice to these other app stores…Games and productivity apps are all good, but put an emphasis on farts, beer and booze. You’ll catch up in no time.

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on April 22nd, 2009

Apple teams up with Adobe for iPhone FlashThe economy may be in the crapper, but Apple hasn’t really noticed. They just keep on keeping on, selling iPods, iPhones and Macs to a hungry public. Apple just reported a $1.21b profit on revenues of $8.16b, making it another record quarter.

This when Mac sales fell three percent compared to last year. Luckily for them it was offset by a three percent increase in iPod sales (mostly the iPod touch), while iPhone sales jumped 123-percent.

iPhone gets mini golf action

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on April 20th, 2009

iphoneminigolf-sbI’m not a huge fan of mini golf myself, but my kids love it. In fact we went to play mini gold yesterday and I got beat by a 7-year-old again. My son is some sort of mini golf Tiger Woods, always hitting a hole in one despite the fact that he usually doesn’t look at what he is doing as he hits the ball.

I can still beat him (usually) at video games so to help my bruised ego I might challenge him to a round of mini golf on the iPhone with the new Mini Golf 99 holes Theme Park application. As the name suggest the game has 99 different holes with four different courses to choose from.

The GSM smartphone features a 3.2-inch QVGA screen, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, dual SIM support, microSD slot, and video recording capabilities.

It will cost you $129 right now, on sale from its $400 MSRP. At least it has features. China, will you never learn? Combining two great things into one is clever and all, but when will you make a knockoff that really captures our hearts?

MasterCard launches ATM Hunter app for iPhone

Posted in Mobile Phones by Shane McGlaun on April 16th, 2009

atmhunterI hate it when I am driving around in an unfamiliar part of my own town or am visiting another town and need an ATM. Finding an ATM can be a pain if you aren’t in familiar territory. Once you do find an ATM the fees that the machine charges are usually high as well.

MasterCard has announced a new app for the iPhone and iPod touch called ATM Hunter that makes sure no matter where you are you can find an ATM to get cash. The application uses the location services platform of the Apple devices to find ATMs near the user.

LeapFrog jumps in with iPhone app

leapfrognumberrumble-sbAny parent knows the type of toys LeapFrog makes. The company has a line of educational toys that teach kids of all sorts of things like phonics and math. My kids have a set of refrigerator magnets they play with constantly from the company that teaches phonics. If I hear “every letter makes a sound” one more time I may snap.

LeapFrog is now moving from the refrigerator onto my iPhone with the introduction of the company’s first iPhone App called Number Rumble. The game is a math quiz program that helps kids six to ten years old learn addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
