Amazon’s new iPhone app offers in-store price comparisons

Posted in Amazon by Conner Flynn on November 22nd, 2010

Amazon already allows you to scan a barcode on a product to purchase it online with an iPhone app and now the company has launched a new way to compare and shop with a free iPhone app called Price Check. The app lets you scan a barcode, or take a picture of the product, or even simply say the product’s name to access product listings on Amazon’s site.

Many of us will be using this one often. Right now users can take a photo of the item and match the picture to books, DVDs, CDs and video games, though Amazon says that it will be adding more categories very soon. This should make Xmas shopping a breeze this year.

Captain’s Log Star Trek iPhone app

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on July 27th, 2010

The Captain’s Log app allows Star Trek fans to ditch the iPhone’s vanilla Notes and Voice Memos in favor of a Starfleet-themed communicator, allowing for sound and text capture, and the ability to map GPS coordinates. This is very useful when headed to your local grocery store.

Stardate 2010…I ran out of toilet paper and had to use a spare starfleet shirt…Will also pick up some Romulan ale and hit on some babes… You can also browse a 3D rendering of the Starship Enterprise before taking on a command rank, when you will be able to share logs with fellow captains using social networks.

It provides a menu system that looks very similar to the iPhones, and is actually functional providing access to things like email, photos, IM’s and other apps.

It doesn’t look quite as nice as the real iPhone, and of course there’s no fancy touch screen, but it does look pretty cool to try out before someone takes it down. Also, instead of the iPhone switching from portrait to landscape when you rotate it, the directions instruct you in just the opposite …
