Yoomi DUO Turns Your iPad into an Interactive Board Game

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on August 1st, 2011

Despite the fact that touchscreen tablets are supposed to be free of unnecessary accessories and other gadgets, the DUO will gladly turn your iPad into an interactive board game. Just set it on top of the iPad or iPad 2 and it will work with a game called Yoomi.

The DUO comes with tokens, so at the end of the game there is a winner and a loser. It retails for $14.99 on Amazon and is also available at Toys ‘R’ Us, and Walmart. I guess this is where board games are headed, instead of coming in a large box.

Netflix dominates iPad and consoles, Hulu dominates PCs

Posted in Netflix by Reuben Drake on July 27th, 2011

Netflix and Hulu dominate entirely separate sectors of digital streaming, according to a Nielsen study. Both are now available on many platforms, but Netflix is the dominant one on non-PCs, including iPads, game consoles, and media hubs, ranging from a three-to-one ratio on Apple’s tablet to seven or eight times higher.

Hulu isn’t a lame duck though. They win on computers, often by a wide margin, with 89 percent of its viewers watching on a computer versus just 42 percent of Netflix owners wanting to do the same. Networked media hubs like Roku boxes and smartphones were a close race, though they have a smaller viewing audience as a whole.

Apple patent reveals unused iPad design with two USB slots

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 10th, 2011

During an earnings conference call last year, Steve Jobs hinted that Apple had tested several designs for the iPad during its development process. One of these possible designs may have surfaced in a patent application recently approved by the USPTO and now we get to see what might have been.

This patent shows off a Wi-Fi+3G iPad with an extra USB slot for landscape connectivity. The auxiliary USB slot would let you place the iPad in a dedicated landscape dock and dock it in portrait mode while syncing using both slots. Apple holds a patent for the design, but we will likely never see this in an upcoming iPad model. Still, it always nice to see how things might have been.

Time Inc. and Apple to offer free iPad downloads to print magazine subscribers

Posted in Apple by Reuben Drake on May 2nd, 2011

Good news for magazine readers. Time Inc. has made a deal with Apple to allow print magazine subscribers to access the company’s iPad editions for free. Starting this week, those who subscribe to print versions of Sports Illustrated, Fortune, and Time will be able to download the iPad versions at no cost, directly within the magazines’ apps, as it should be.

iPad users still won’t be able to purchase exclusively digital subscriptions to Time Inc.’s publications. Time wants to incorporate digital subscriptions to its iPad model, but negotiations have hit some snags, mostly due to how Apple shares subscriber data. Publishers claim to need that data to apply the TV Everywhere model to magazines, but Apple says that the subscriber information should only be shared on an opt-in basis. It doesn’t seem like they will agree anytime soon.
