Apple Releases Info on iOS 8

Apple Announces iOS 8Apple made a number of anticipated announcements today at WWDC, but the likely most anticipated was the release of iOS 8 for the iPhone and iPad devices. This is the latest operating system for the mobile devices from Apple, replacing the existing iOS 7 with a number of changes. None seem radical but all were well received. Below is a summary of what came down for the new OS today:

The Mail application will have the ability to hold and simply swipe to delete messages, not unlike Mailbox or Android’s Gmail. They also added a feature to minimize a message you are composing temporarily to read other messages.

LG Launches New Smart Bulb, Connects via Bluetooth or WiFi

LG Smart BulbLG announced the release of a new Smart Bulb in the coming days in Korea that interacts with you through your iOS or Android device. This new LED light bulb comes with some pretty nifty features which are already leaving us wanting in the US.

This simple but handy features include blinking the light when you have a call on your device, and having a light slowly brighten as a silent alarm from your mobile device. The LG Smart Bulb can also be set to turn on and off for periods of time during the day while you are away on vacation to make house look as if someone is home. Another cool feature allows your mobile OS to set mood lighting based on the music that it’s playing. So having some really intense music will generate a bright light, …

HBO Go app for Android & iOS

HBO has a ton of great original programming. So it is good news that it has announced the HBO Go streaming service is finally going to go mobile. If you are a subscriber, you will get “instant and unlimited access” to “every episode of every season” of every HBO show. How awesome is that?

The app for Android and iOS will also include a wide range of great movies, over 3G and WiFi. It’s for the US only though. Good news for us, not so good for everyone else.

Warner Brothers introduces iOS app for Online Movie Purchases

Here’s something for movie lovers. The launch of ‘App editions’ of some Warner Brothers movies. They will offer downloadable and streaming versions of films with extra features and expanded content. The first two offerings are The Dark Knight and Inception.

They offer free apps with some bonus content and the first five minutes of the movie, then charging $9.99 and $11.99 to unlock the rest. The extras include Twitter and Facebook integration, plus the ability to offer the digital version in countries where iTunes doesn’t sell movies yet, like China, Brazil and the Netherlands.

Kindle for iOS gets background downloads, file support

Good news for iOS users. Amazon has announced a major update to the Kindle app for the iPad and iPhone. It’s free in the App Store. The 2.5 update will now finish, though not start, a book download in the background. It also now supports raw files and can load supported text from Mail or Safari in addition to using iTunes’ File Sharing for sideloading books from a computer.

The update has access to Project Gutenberg’s collection of “millions” of public domain books as well, so you can read free books all day if you like. Some other changes are better image zooming and a new book indicator plus several bug fixes.

Pioneer ships 3D Blu-ray players with iOS app support

Pioneer’s latest range of 3D Blu-ray players will now feature iOS support. These include the BDP-430, Elite BDP-41FD and BDP-43FD. Another shared function would be HDMI 1.4a connectivity for stereoscopic 3D capability along with 36-bit color support. For this the source and the TV need to support it. You also get Pioneer’s iControlAV iOS app which is available for free in the App Store, letting iPhone and iPod users control their player over a local network.

All three models will support a continuous mode which remembers where the movie stopped, so you can play it from that position. Using the Ethernet jack, you can also access Netflix, Pandora and YouTube without a computer.

Official Polaroid app for iOS

Polaroid is making a comeback, but as it turns out, an iOS app has arrived before an actual camera. Polaroid has partnered with Lol Software to release the official Polaroid app for the iPhone and iPod touch. The app offers users 30 different official filters and colored borders to create the Polaroid effect.

You also have the option of uploading pictures directly to Facebook. The app supports iOS 4.2, its wireless AirPrint capability and also allows full resolution images to be stored in the photo library or shared via email.

BlackBerry overtakes iOS in US web share

The BlackBerry had a victory today after StatCounter showed the platform overtaking the iPhone in web use in the US. They’ve been steadily narrowing the gap over the past year, and now RIM just slightly overtook Apple in traffic, accounting for 34.3 percent of American traffic while iOS slipped to 33 percent. Despite signs of growth before, Android as a web platform has leveled off at just 23.8 percent.

Worldwide figures also show RIM climbing, at 19.25 percent, but it still trailed iOS’ 21.9 percent and was well behind Symbian’s 31.9 percent. If these trends continue, Android and BlackBerry devices could get twice the web share of iOS sometime next year.

BMW to put iPod and iPhone menus on car navigation screens

Controlling the music and content on your iPod or iPhone is easy to do with the Apple menus. Things can get more difficult if you have to use a system on an accessory that is different though. BMW has announced that it will support the iPod Out feature on iOS4.

The feature will allow BMW to put the actual menus from the iPod touch or the iPhone onto the cars in dash screen. BMW will support the feature on future BMW and Mini models.
