Want to avoid getting stung by wasps as you are trying to exterminate them? Why not go all out and build a humanoid robot with a mohawk to do it for you? Professor Sekine of Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, did just that.

The bot is called Mohican as in “last of the Mohicans” though this is the first. It can be controlled via remote and voice. He hopes to release it “sometime next summer,”. A shame it doesn’t yell at the Wasps like Mr. T.

We’ve sent robots into space before, but nothing humanoid like this guy. If monkeys can get shot into space, then why not? That way astronauts can get creeped out by robots just like we do down on Earth. Should make them feel more at home.

Robonaut2 was developed by NASA and GM. It’s basically a trainable, expendable crew member who can be sent out to do dangerous stuff that astronauts don’t want to risk their lives doing. Robonaut2 is ambidextrous and can use the same tools as human astronauts, while able to lift up to 20lbs.

This bot looks like he’s a wise-guy with those eyebrows. He can also walk. But what’s really interesting is that he is made in the USA by Futurebots and powered by two Atom processors (a dual-core Atom 330 and an Atom 230), which power two separate systems running Windows XP and Windows 7.

ATOM-7x will have a range of capabilities thanks to several sensors, gyros and accelerometers. An advanced stereo vision system will let it “take on real world problems.” Whatever that means. Presumably it will make it easier for the bot to hunt down humans and steal their netbooks for an upgrade.

Are you getting tired of rocking fake plastic guitars yet? Good. Me too. So now it’s time to build robots that can play it. Old one-eye here is basically a mannequin stuffed with robotic parts that allow it to play.

It was developed by engineering student Pete Nikrin with some help from Minnesota West Technical College. “Roxanne” responds to each note as it appears onscreen. The robot can read the notes in transitions between light and dark pixels using its left eye which has a camera implanted.

In between planning our demise and testing cycles and such, robots like to hit the gym just like you. And while this guy may not be fast, he’s working on it. So very soon, running won’t help any of us.

The video shows the Jaemi HUBO robot walking on a treadmill with no problems at all. We aren’t sure if he can run right now or not, but god help us all, they are working out like Rocky. Probably watching a montage of human carnage in their heads.

In the video above, this gigantic ALCNON humanoid robot picks a fight with a miniature opponent, showing off a combination of his swift punches and dance moves. The little bot is pretty scrappy and comes at him again and again, sadly to no avail. It’s all pretty sad, yet strangely satisfying.

Despite ALCNON having a name that sounds like a substance abuse meeting, he’s presumably pretty adapt at picking on robots his own size, not that you’d know it from this video. He sports a creepy cyclops eye, and two pincers for hands. ALCNON was a big star at the recent ROBO-ONE robot battle in Japan.
