HTC Thunderbolt inductive charging back hits FCC

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on May 15th, 2011

The inductive-charging backplate for the HTC Thunderbolt has just hit the FCC, so keeping your battery-devouring gadget charged up will soon get a whole lot easier. Right now you have to plug several times a day just to keep it all juiced up, but soon you’ll be able to just rest it on a charging mat.

We don’t know when it will arrive, but hopefully it will be soon as it would make our lives a bit easier.

HTC Thunderbolt gets it’s first teardown

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on April 11th, 2011

We love drooling after new gadgets. We love to use them and of course, we like to tear them apart. You always hurt the ones you love after all. The HTC Thunderbolt has already hit the FCC, but now that the phone has actually been released, we are getting to the juicy details of the innards.

This teardown isn’t up to the standards of the folks over at iFixit, but it is a teardown just the same. We love to see what makes these devices tick after all. Hit the link below for more details and pics.

HTC Thunderbolt getting Android 2.3 in spring

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on March 27th, 2011

An HTC representative says that the Thunderbolt should get Android 2.3 in the spring. We know thise because the representative named Carol was telling Droid-Life reader John about compatibility limits with Bluetooth, when she added that HTC was “excited to announce” the refresh. She says that more details would come closer to the launch.

Among the list of features mentioned were NFC and interface polish changes. This isn’t very surprising since most of HTC’s new phones will all launch with Android 2.3, but hey it’s always nice to have confirmation.

HTC Thunderbolt now available

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on March 17th, 2011

We knew it was coming and yesterday we had word that “tomorrow,” was the day, which means today it is here. Verizon Wireless is now taking online orders for HTC’s 4.3-inch Thunderbolt. The price is $250 on a two-year contract.

The handset comes with Android 2.2 as the OS underlying HTC Sense 2.0 UI, an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording, 768MB of RAM, and a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 chip. If Verizon’s price seems high, the Thunderbolt has been seen as low as $180 at Amazon, although they have it on back order right now.

Skype completely axed from HTC ThunderBolt?

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on March 16th, 2011

When the HTC Thunderbolt was announced, one of the most interesting aspects was its ability to support Skype video calls. But as release drew closer, Verizon said that Skype wouldn’t be ready in time for launch. Now, the phone is officially announced to arrive tomorrow and Skype is unavailable on the Android phone. Not only that, but it looks like it might never be released at all.

All the web pages on HTC’s and Verizon’s sites have removed all mention of the Skype feature as if it never existed. Poof. Just gone. Scrubbed clean. Droid-Life investigated and now it is starting to look like a conspiracy. There was no explanation of why it was removed. We thought about calling Muldar and Scully for comment, but the cigarette smoking man shrouded in darkness just laughed at us and told us to drop it. And that guy is creepy.

HTC Thunderbolt coming March 17th

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on March 14th, 2011

We’ve been pretty psyched about HTC’s Thunderbolt ever since we first heard about it. And frankly that seems like a lifetime ago, after it’s release has been pushed further and further back. But now we have some good news and we hope that our hopes don’t get dashed yet again. A leaked email and an HTC regional sales manager’s tweet (the account has now been deleted) both claim that Verizon’s first 4G handset will finally be available on March 17th.

HTC posted on Facebook that the official launch date will be announced “soon, “. Well, four days from now qualifies as soon in our book. If they delay this again, people are going to start looking at other options.

HTC Thunderbolt rumored for March 21

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on March 10th, 2011

The HTC Thunderbolt has another firmer launch date now, through this latest rumor. Not one, but two insiders are saying that the phone will ship on March 21. BGR says that the tips came from fairly new sources, but also that HTC’s Facebook page briefly mentioned the same date. So it seems more reliable.

The phone was originally thought to have a mid-February release, with dates being repeatedly pushed back. This may be due to poor battery life that needed some firmware fixes, but we don’t even have official word on that.
