HP Core i3-based G62t laptop

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

The new G62t may be in the same family as HP’s budget-minded G60 laptop, but it has more in common with the high-end Envy 15 as far as appearance. It certainly is stylish. The specs are pretty respectable too. You get a standard Core i3 processor (upgradable to Core i5 or i7), 3GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 15.6-inch LED-backlit display, and a DVD burner (upgradable to Blu-ray).

Their is at least one downside, the non-upgradeable integrated Intel HD graphics. Then again the starting price is just $699, making that drawback something many of us can live with. Looks good.

HP rumored to be readying notebooks with built-in pico projectors

Posted in HP by Shane McGlaun on January 21st, 2010

Pico projectors are good in certain instances, but not so great in others with the tech available today. The universal issue is that the light sources used in the small projectors lack the brightness needed to work well in rooms that are reasonably bright. In the dark, they are pretty good.

New rumors are surfacing that have HP getting ready to unveil a line of notebooks and tablets sometime in 2010 that sport integrated pico projectors. Details on the rumored notebooks are unavailable.

HP’s Wall of Touch

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on January 19th, 2010

The future is filled with giant walls that react to your touch, but HP’s “Wall of Touch” does more than that, sensing your intent even before you touch it, thanks to cameras and a magnetic strip that detect where your hands are, activating the items on the screen accordingly. Watching and waiting for you to make your move.

The company is starting to roll out this gigantic grid of screens powered by its Z800 workstation. It will first land in the Continental Airlines terminal at the Houston airport. If it proves popular enough, HP might decide to make it a mainstream product by next year. If that happens the pricing would be between $2,000 and $100,000 depending on the capabilities. HP EliteBook 8440w Notebook

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on January 18th, 2010

HP has released a line of six new notebooks, but the most interesting is the HP EliteBook 8440w, with a comfortable keyboard, a fast processor and durability. This one is a mobile workstation. In order to be called a workstation, certain software and hardware requirements must be met and the HP EliteBook 8440w meets many of them.

Obviously the one downside to the HP EliteBook 8440w is that it’s heavy at nearly 6 pounds, but it’s solid. It’s strong and rigid and should be able to withstand most of what you can do to it in your daily life.

HP ships one of the first USB 3.0 laptops

Posted in USB 3.0 by Conner Flynn on January 14th, 2010

We are slowly but surely moving toward USB 3.0 and HP if now one of the first to ship a laptop with USB 3.0 ports. Specifically, these laptops are certain variations of the Envy 15 quad-core notebook, which will support the faster data transfers of up to 5Gbps.

USB 3.0 adoption has gotten off to a slow start, but HP doesn’t want to miss out. USB 3.0 is already being used for hard drives from LaCie and Western Digital and should be useful for SSDs that get bottlenecked by USB 2.0.

HP responds to ‘racist webcam’ claim

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on December 22nd, 2009

Remember that video of Desi and Wanda from the other day? The video made it look like the HP MediaSmart PC with facial recognition doesn’t work with black people. Well, HP has responded. They blame bad lighting for the PC not being able to follow Desi’s face.

The technology we use is built on standard algorithms that measure the difference in intensity of contrast between the eyes and the upper cheek and nose. We believe that the camera might have difficulty “seeing” contrast in conditions where there is insufficient foreground lighting.

Are HP webcams racist?

Posted in Humor by Conner Flynn on December 20th, 2009

So apparently the face tracking feature of the HP web cam will not recognize or track black faces as demonstrated in this video. Many users don’t have any problems with face tracking but, “As soon as my blackness enters the frame…”

Man, in this day and age? HP should get right on this. This is horrible. Obama is in the white house now. Are HP webcams rascist? Well, they Seem to track Wanda just fine. You be the judge.
