We all know Facebook is continuously evolving, and just recently the social networking behemoth made some announcements that will likely make its popularity even larger, partly by making things smaller. On Thursday Facebook launched Facebook Lite, which is basically a scaled down version of the current Facebook site. Existing users can log onto Facebook Lite and it even uses the same cookies to recognize you if you are already logged in. All you friends are there and you can post messages, but it’s just got a little fewer “pieces of flare” about it.

The idea for Facebook Lite is to make a slimmer version of Facebook, not too unlike Twitter, that more people could use in places that have limited access to bandwidth, so the pages are not so “heavy” to load. So far the site is ironically only available in the U.S. and India, but I suppose they have to test it out somewhere. Chances are it will be rolling into some more obscure areas of the world soon.

For those of you who have been patiently waiting, Android has finally joined the ranks of handsets with a mobile version of Facebook available. Through some recently released information on Facebook’s “Facebook for Android” page, the app appears to have a fairly comprehensive set of features.

Android users can post status updates, view news feeds, friends’ walls and user info. Facebook for Android can also share photos from the phone and also can look up 125 friends’ phone numbers from the home screen, all from the home screen.

I am not that big on social networking. I have a Facebook account but I have never posted images, don’t post the minute details of my life and I only log on when someone I know asks to be my Facebook friend.

If you are a heavy user of social media like Facebook and YouTube a new app from a company, called yourBusinessChannel may make keeping everyone updated on your life easier. The app connects to Facebook and YouTube allowing the user to post comments to YouTube videos that are also posted to Facebook at the same time.

LG has announced an entry-level messaging handset in the LG GW300. It comes pre-loaded with Facebook, letting you poke your friends to your hearts content. Some other features include a full QWERTY keypad, a 2.4” 240×320 QVGA display, stereo Bluetooth connectivity, USB 2.0 alongside 2.5G GSM, GPRS/EDGE network support.

No 3G here. Why they wouldn’t throw in Wi-Fi support in absence of 3G we have no idea. No word on the camera’s megapixels either, but you shouldn’t expect too much considering that this one is on the cheaper side.

Pierre Bureau, the founder and CEO of Arimaz in Switzerland, recently showed off a demo of a prototype of a cute penguin robot that his company is planning to begin selling in September for $99. It’s called MyDeskFriend. The idea is that this Penguin is a small companion for your desk.

It comes with a docking station which is hooked up to your PC. You can interact with the robot in a bunch of ways. It can follow your finger and will even detect the edges of the your desk so that it doesn’t fall off, thanks to 5 infrared sensors. It also has an accelerometer, so it knows when it’s being touched or shaken. The eyes will even change color depending on it’s mood. If you shake it too much, it’s eyes will turn red because you’ve made it mad. You can even connect it with your Facebook profile for the ultimate in dorky behavior.

Well, it’s official. The Motorola Karma June 28th from AT&T. Feeling social? Good, because this one is a “social messaging slider” that allows you to chat and tag, friend and poke and post and message to your heart’s content, with one-click access to Facebook and Myspace.

The device is 3G, features a QWERTY keyboard, an aGPs and AT&T Navigator software. The QA1 Karma will be available for $79.99 after mail-in rebate with a two-year service agreement for wireless voice plans of $39.99 a month or higher and a $20 a month data or messaging plan. (Pay $129.99 and after mail-in rebate receive $50 AT&T Promotion Card).

Right up there with printers, digital picture frames are fairly boring. So companies keep throwing more features at us so that we may decide to buy one. That’s why Kogan’s 8-inch WiFi LCD digiframe features a bunch of tricks we’ve seen before, along with a few that are new.

At E3 today the big M announced a bunch of upgrades to Xbox Live. The biggest news is the relaunch of the video service, now Zune-branded with 1080p instant-on streaming content in 18 countries. XBL will also now integrate with Facebook, which is great news for all of you social butterflies out there. Your Facebook account can be linked to your Gamertag, and games will support Facebook Connect for sharing online content.

That’s not all. You’ll also be getting Twitter and Last.fm. Yes, these updates are huge. There’s more. Netflix users will now be able to browse the entire catalog instead of just loading their queue, and since Microsoft has gotten its Party Watch system down, you’ll be able to diss videos with your online friends.

Samsung announced the availability of its new Vice for the Canadian market via Bell. The 3G phone features a sliding full QWERTY keyboard with standard number keys that should make texting, emailing, and Facebook easier.

The phone also comes with a 2.2-inch color display, 2MP digital camera, built-in GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, integrated media player, and a microSDHC card slot for expansion. You can get the Samsung Vice through Bell Canada for $49.95 with a 3-year contract.

Thinking of working out some SPAM scheme to take advantage of users on social networking sites? After last week many would-be spammers may be thinking twice. On Friday the social networking site Facebook was awarded an $873 million fine for damages from an online spammer. This was the largest settlement awarded to date under the CAN-SPAM act of 2003.

A Canadian citizen named Adam Guerbuez with his company Atlantic Blue Capital used different types earlier this year to trick Facebook users into thinking they had messages from other Facebook “friends”. The messages were really from Guerbuez and his company and contained advertisement for sex enhancement drugs, illegal narcotics and sexual explicit materials.

In a surprising move, Facebook won’t be creating an application to run on T-Mobile’s G1 Android-powered smartphone, even though it is available for the iPhone and BlackBerry. Considering this, Facebook fans who are in the market for a new phone will probably pass on the G1.

Facebook commented that Google or another third party will have to develop the application for them, as they don’t want to dedicate any resources toward developing an app for Android. If you want to take a paranoid look at the situation, consider this. Facebook is ad-served and invested in by Microsoft. Make of that what you will, but just because your paranoid, doesn’t mean they aren’t out to deny you a phone app.

To the most popular social networking platforms online right now are Facebook and MySpace. A large number of applications are available to allow users of these websites to add more functionality to their personal pages already. Another new widget has been announced today, this time from SRS Labs.

The new SRS Labs widget is called Photogram. It allows users to add sound effects to photos posted online. SRS Labs says the sound effects are easy to create and utilize its familiar SRS audio processing technology.

Nets2go has a new set of 9 custom-made wood blinds, but they’re not the kind you find in home decor stores. They feature Web 2.0 logos. You can get them in Google flavor, Firefox, YouTube, Digg, Stumbleupon, Facebook, even Wordpress. Just be warned, being this geeky could cost you your marriage.

In fact, these blinds have an interesting story. Net2go manufactured the entire set for a customer who separated from his wife a couple of weeks after installing these blinds, because “She doesn’t understand the intense geek in me”. Maybe he should have added match.com into the mix.

Only on Thursday Google had made the announcement about its new OpenSocial platform and already news in cropping up of developers taking advantage of this open, common platform. In their announcement we knew there were going to be a number of social networking sites that were already onboard with the new API’s, including Salesforce.com, Hi5, LinkedIn, Ning, and of course Google’s Orkut but we weren’t expecting the giants like MySpace or Facebook.

As it turned out MySpace actually is going to take advantage of OpenSocial along with Bebo, another large social networking site. The one clearly left out of this picture was Facebook, in which this launch echoed a mighty blow to with many of the more significant social network sites in the world taking part in a common platform without them. According to Wired, Facebook representatives maintained that they had “still not been briefed on OpenSocial” despite Google stating that they had, and Facebook employees showing up at Google’s developer sandbox event.

Suppose you own a company that both Microsoft and Google want to own a part of. Who do you choose to do a deal with? Do you base your decision on which company you think will be the stronger in the future or just on who’s offering the most cash? This is the present dilemma that Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg is facing right now. Both Google and Microsoft are neck-and-neck with striking a deal that would see either one of the two online titans getting a 5-to-10 percent ownership with Facebook. The deal is expected to close sometime today or tomorrow.

The potential deal is likely to be huge for whomever gets it. Both Microsoft and Google are set up to capitalize on serving advertising to Facebook’s 34 million members. No one from either of the three companies is offering to comment about the deal but if the “The New York Times” is reporting that it exists, take it to the bank.
