Facebook phasing out the Share button

Posted in Facebook by Conner Flynn on February 28th, 2011

Facebook has announced that they will be slowly phasing out the Share button. If you want to share articles in the future, you would have to Like it instead. Right now, when you Like something, it only shows up as a single line on your news feed, while if you Shared something, you’d get the full story, with the headline attached, a thumbnail and a link to the original post.

So the Like button will act like the Share button instead. It’s good for those who make the content as they will get more links, but there will be a lot more content on your page. We aren’t sure what they are thinking with this tweak, but I guess we will see it in action soon.

Once again Facebook has denied yet another rumor that a FB-branded handset is coming. There will be no facebook HTC device. Facebook addicts will just have to wait and hope.

Dan Rose, head of business development at the company, came forward with the following statement: “This is really just another example of a manufacturer who has taken our public APIs (application programming interfaces) and integrated them into their device in an interesting way. The rumors around there being something more to this HTC device are overblown.”

HTC to unveil two Facebook branded Android phones next month

Posted in HTC by Conner Flynn on January 26th, 2011

Last we heard, the official Facebook phone was just rumor. It was dismissed by Mark Zuckerberg himself after all. But that doesn’t mean that Facebook won’t license the brand to phone manufacturers. The latest rumors online suggest that they will do just that.

Rumor is that HTC will be unveiling two new Facebook smartphones at Mobile World Congress next month. These phones will feature the social network’s familiar color scheme and branding, with a modified version of Android built around and focusing on Facebook. One of the devices apparently has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, but we are short on other details.

Yahoo accepts Google and Facebook logins

Posted in Yahoo by Conner Flynn on January 19th, 2011

Last year Yahoo started using Bing to power its search engine and this year they have announced that they will be accepting Google and Facebook account logins via the OpenID authentication protocol. Yahoo! says that this will make it easier for users to access their services without the need to sign up.

The new OpenID authentication system starts tomorrow. I wonder if we will see much more of Yahoo, since this doesn’t look good for them. They wish that others would be accepting their logins instead.

They will receive your message in a real-time conversation, with no need to worry about which recipient prefers chatting over email etc.

Users will also be able to own an @facebook.com email address. There will not be a subject line though and you can’t mass forward mails among others, keeping things limited to just conversation. Messages and email addresses will be launched over the next few months.

During their mobile event today, Facebook admitted that the app for Android devices has been behind other clients and so they are trying to correct things with a new version, 1.4, which is now available on the Android Market.

It’s pretty much the same, but it now supports check-ins with Places, Groups and there are some improvements to notifications as well. No chat, but hey, that’s what your phone is for. Right?

Tree talks to the world using Facebook and Twitter

Posted in twitter by Conner Flynn on September 20th, 2010

The Flemish. If anyone can get a tree to talk to the world, it’s them. This talking tree was found in Brussels. This collaboration between EOS Magazine and Happiness Brussels has a 100 year old tree outfitted with a dust meter, ozone meter, light meter, weather station, webcam and microphone. They all report back to Twitter, Flickr, Soundlcoud, and Facebook, as well as talking-tree.com.

This is convenient because the last time a tree talked to you it involved psychoactive drugs and purple bunnies. This has got to be better, right? Video below.

Is Facebook building a phone?

Posted in Facebook by Conner Flynn on September 19th, 2010

According to TechCrunch’s sources, Facebook is creating its very own cellphone. Apparently, they’re building the OS and have tasked a hardware manufacturer to build everything else around it. When Google’s Nexus One was announced back in January, Facebook supposedly began planning this mystery phone.

They wanted something that would integrate Facebook contacts more deeply than anything Android or any other platforms had done before. Two Facebook employees, Joe Hewitt and Matthew Papakipos are leading the team involving the OS, using their previous experience as Firefox browser creator and Chrome OS builder to launch a Facebook worthy phone.

The downside is that the newer model has still photos taken down to 10 megapixels (the old one featured 14 megapixels). Still, at $200, it’s all good. It hits store shelves later this month.

Free iPad scam hits Facebook and Twitter

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on August 26th, 2010

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. That’s some sound advice that you can apply to everything in life. Especially when it comes to internet “offers”. And there’s a sucker born every minute. Messages on Facebook or Twitter which offer a free iPad, are bait for these gullible people.

You should avoid these at all cost. since this scam spreads through hacked accounts and will ask you to check out a website that offers to send free iPads to everyone who responds. Twitter and Facebook are aware of the situation. Facebook is sending out password resets to hacked individuals.
