Turn Your Netbook into an E-Book reader

Posted in ebooks by Conner Flynn on February 11th, 2010

You want to get into the ebook action right? But you don’t want to spend money on a Kindle or a Nook. Well, if you own a netbook, you can just use that.

Lifehacker has some tips for turning your netbook into an ebook reader and it isn’t that hard. Their method relies fully on software installation, and you won’t need any tools or have to play operation on your netbook. It’s an interesting read.

Steampunk blunderbuss actually fires

Posted in Weapons by Conner Flynn on February 7th, 2010

We’ve covered many steampunk mods around these parts. Some are actually Steampunk while others are just a lot of brass attachments glued onto a gadget. Well this one is Steampunk alright. And these guns actually fire.

The blunderbuss shown above shoots not bullets, but rubber balls. That doesn’t mean it won’t hurt like a real bullet though. It shoots those rubber balls fast enough to actually penetrate cardboard from a distance. Ouch! And while we don’t want to be on the wrong end of this thing, we can’t help admiring the craftsmanship. Check out some videos below.

God of War Kratos PC casemod

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on February 3rd, 2010

If this case mod’s looks could kill, then all of the gods would be slain with one quick glance. This Kratos God of War case mod means business. It’s easily one of the coolest and most unique that we’ve seen.

We have no idea what’s inside. Anyway with an exterior like that it hardly matters. Kratos just looks like he will start swinging blades immediately and slaying anyone nearby. The innards can be accessed by a hatch on his back. Very awesome.

Make your own Lego iPad tablet

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on January 31st, 2010

Are you an Apple fanboy who absolutely can’t wait to get your hands on Apple’s latest high tech/low capacity creation? No need to wait. You can have yourself a pretend iPad right now.

Made from Lego. This Lego iPad is the work of Joe Meno, editor of the Lego fan site Brick Journal. This is how the iPad looks in plastic brick form. Now you can have one months ahead of everyone else. While you are at it, you can add some much needed functionality, like say USB ports.

Calculator Boy: A backwards mod

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on January 28th, 2010

This modder is doing it all wrong. You are supposed to make something that looks like business, but is really a toy. Not something like looks like a toy, but is really all about business. But still, we can’t help but love this one. It’s a mod fit for math nerds and gaming geeks.

Most calculators are boring, but not this one. What we have here is a traditional calculator that looks like a Game Boy. How awesome is that? We love how it opens on the side. If only I could buy it.

Gameboy goes Steampunk

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on January 24th, 2010

This just may be the most awesome Gameboy mod ever. The steampunk Game Boy. The ultimate in Victorian handheld gaming. Sure it looks awesome, but the modder also added a pro sound mod which increases the the output and changed the red LED light for an orange one.

It took only a week to complete the project, even though it looks like it took much longer. Awesome job. It looks like it was dug up from an archeological site.

Xbox 360 Transformers All Spark mod

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on January 20th, 2010

If you want to get the attention of some giant ass robots, then do what this guy did. Turn your XBox 360 into the All Spark. Just don’t be surprised when Optimus Prime shows up at your door and reaches through your house to get it.

Oh and the All Spark is supposed to turn all of your other stuff into robots, so this probably isn’t a good idea. Unless you like your XBox suddenly walking around and shooting at you. It’s a pretty sweet mod though. I just hope this guy is still in one piece.

Lego router works, delivers Wi-Fi

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on January 17th, 2010

Lego makes all things possible. So it isn’t surprising that someone named Luke has ripped open the WRT54GL and transplanted it into a Lego case. The best part is that it looks great. I wouldn’t mind this sitting in my living room.

Want to try your hand at this Lego creation? Go for it. Full instructions are available. You can likely get it done during a quiet weekend.

Handheld wireless visual interface for PS3

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on December 30th, 2009

Here’s an awesome DIY peripheral for the PS3 that you don’t see everyday. A handheld wireless visual interface made especially for Sony’s console. It works by sending controller commands from a 1.2GHz wireless transmitter to the PS3, while retrieving video signals from the console to the device at the same time.

It features a 5″ LCD display, a LED capacity meter, AV input, a headphone jack, USB connectivity and even a button for every DualShock command. I want one.

Arduino based MakerBotWatch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on December 28th, 2009

This is one of the coolest watches we’ve seen in some time. When you think Arduino, you tend to think robot projects, not watches. This Arduino based MakerBotWatch actually manages to be fresh and exciting and it’s something that any DIYer can try.

The MakerBotWatch uses an ATmega328 microcontroller to run the bootloader, while the two concentric circles of LEDs show minutes and hours. A vertical row of four LEDs adds in the additional resolution needed to get 60 minutes on the watch face. The MakerBotWatch is expected to go into production as a kit soon, but with no laser-cut bezel.

Xbox 360 laptop sports retro style

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on December 27th, 2009

Xbox 360 laptop? Normally when you hear about such a thing you think Ben Heck. Amazingly enough, this is the work of someone else. It is the creation of CollinE from Ben’s forums.

We love the red and black color scheme and the giant X on the top lid. This 360 stays true to the original console in most respects, even the “wind tunnel” noise generated by Collin’s five fans. If you want to try your hand at this, a video tour of the hardware is available.

New keyboard modded to look old

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on December 22nd, 2009

We have no idea why someone would mod a new wireless keyboard into the old looking one you see above. It must be a sickness or a dutch thing since this was created by a Dutch guy.

He took a Logitech Wireless Wii keyboard apart, mapped the key codes and did some soldering to make it all happen. But why? I guess I’m just not all that nostalgic about old keyboards. What do you guys think? Do you prefer this, or a new keyboard?

Game Boy hidden in a calculator

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on December 19th, 2009

Game Boy hidden in a calculatorThis is the best way to play video games while at school. Everyone thinks you are doing a complex math problem, but really you are getting your game on. The only problem is, you are going to be in trouble if you have an actual math problem to do.

This mod took it’s creator about 13 hours to complete, which is understandable. Most of that time was likely spent playing Mario games and Tetris. I hope the teacher doesn’t read this.

DIY Steampunk camera

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on December 17th, 2009

DIY Steampunk cameraWhen the big name camera makers don’t offer any Steampunk cameras, what do you do? You build your own of course. That’s what this guy did. He built himself a homemade steampunk camera. And it’s more than just a digital camera with a brass case on it.

It’s completely homemade. Which is very impressive indeed. Aside from one obviously plastic piece. It must come in handy for snapping photos of all your handlebar-mustached relatives.

Morphius robot case mod

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on December 15th, 2009

Morphius robot case modSupposedly this mod comes from creator Maciel Barreto, but I’m not convinced. Clearly this thing arrived from the future with a mission to kill us all. But if Maciel wants to be an accomplice, that’s on him. He’s not fooling us.

This is basically a battle damaged robot with a PC inside that took months to build. Every detail of MORPHIUS was hand-carved in clay to make a silicone mold. Then the final shell was made from fiberglass and resin. So he claims.
