Dream Car 123: Pyramid power is back

Dream Car 123: Pyramid power is backBack in February, the Dream Car 123 was the latest in pyramid power cars. Still is, but now instead of cruising the streets at about 45 mph, with an 80-mile range, it’s got a far greater range these days. It also has bullet proof glass should the Pope want to get in on the action. They’ve also cut costs considerably. Back in February, pricing for the amazingly un-streamlined car was about $60,000 in supplies.

Fast forward to today, with the Dream Car now costing about $8,000 in materials with a mass production model being somewhere between $16,000 and $24,000. A 3.5 hour charge will give the car a 240 mile-range for about $5 in electricity costs. Sure, people will see you coming and call 911, thinking you’re an alien, but it’s well worth it should you buy one in the future or build one yourself.

Dolmette motorcyle is powered by 24 Dolmar Chainsaw Engines

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on September 14th, 2008

Dolmette motorcyle is powered by 24 Dolmar Chainsaw EnginesWhen you power a motorcycle with 24 petrol chain saws which have the best power to weight ratio, it has to be a hell of a ride. All of the chainsaw engines and the 5-speed Harley-Davidson transmission generates a total displacement of 1.9 litres, a power output of 125 kW (170 PS) and 130 Nm of torque at the centrifugal clutches.

That’s all technical talk, but I think we can assume that it’s fast and powerful. In case you were wondering, twelve engines are mounted in two rows of six on either side of the drive belt casing. Each engine is held in place by two threaded studs that normally serve to secure the guide bar to the chainsaw power head. The individual motors are coupled together in sets of three by means of a double-sided drive belt, making up eight modules in all. All in all pretty impressive and it looks like a strange jet-bike. Check out the video below and watch as they yank each engine to life as well as another of the bike in action.

Star Trek art car: Worst starship ever?

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on September 10th, 2008

Star Trek art car: Worst starship ever?Right off the bat, this is not in the same league as the Final Frontier bike. Apparently this comes from Greece where Star Trek must be very different. Apparently in their Star Trek starships are black little vehicles with a weak version of the saucer section bursting out of the roof, tiny red nacelles in back for speed and their own version of the Fonz giving two thumbs up.

I shouldn’t be so harsh. It says Star Trek Fan Club of Athens on it and they probably don’t have that large of a budget. Fact is any Trek car is awesome just because it exists. Still, if the klingon fan club pulled up next you at a light, they would laugh their facial ridges off and you would feel rightly embarrassed.

Guy builds Star Trek Enterprise from Rice Krispies boxes

Guy builds Star Trek Enterprise from Rice Krispies boxesNow, I can understand wanting a Star Trek Enterprise cake or even building one of our favorite Star Trek items, the Final Frontier bike. But what kind of mind creates Star Trek replicas from Rice Krispies boxes?

Bob Prior, that’s who. He’s built sets and even characters from the show out of packages of Rice Krispies. Most Trekkies are just devoted to Trek, but Bob is also devoted to cereal. I think something inside of him went snap, crackle and pop and he’s never been the same since. The man just loves working with cardboard. Some other creations include a 15ft Titanic and 10ft Apollo 11 craft.

DJ Mobile could be the loudest car ever

DJ Mobile could be the loudest car everOne look and you can tell that this vehicle is all sound. It would probably drive down your street one early morning and break every window so that when you woke up, window replacement companies would be on the move and busy all week. That’s not what it was designed for however. It’s the creation of Dutch artist Olaf Mooij, who prefers his sound loud and on the outside of his car rather then inside.

The DJ Mobile is designed to be used as a mobile PA system. It houses two turn-tables and as you can see, a rear full of speakers. Find a party, park this monster, then operate it from a DJ platform while you stand through the sunroof. All I can say is, anything driving behind the DJ mobile best not tailgate as it could surely make you deaf.

Homemade Pong watch

Homemade Pong watchPong is hip again. Or should I say wrist? The Homemade Pong Watch was created by John, a lover of Pong who managed to compress all of the electronics for the watch into a trim 10mm-thick case. The 96×64 OLED display runs continuously and as John points out, there is no need to press a button to see the time. Battery life is 25 hours, so recharging is done every night. It looks absolutely worthy of my wrist in action. I would watch it play all day and get nothing done. Check out the video below. Excellent work.

11 cool Nintendo DS mods

Obama DS Lite
While we’re waiting with bated breath for a possible new updated Nintendo DS model that has been rumored, we thought we would take a look at some of our favorite DS mods. Like the Wii, modders love to spice up Nintendo’s boring design and put their own personal touches on the device. Some are weird, some are awesome, some will make you wonder what’s in the modder’s local water supply, but all are creative.

iSpank Apple logo spanking paddle

iSpank Apple logo spanking paddleWhat can you say about a paddle that will inflict not only pain but brand others with Apple’s logo? We aren’t all born with the mark ya know. This device is great for so many reasons. If you’re an Apple hater, you can run around Zorro style and give those iPhone users the what for with a good smack. If you love Apple, you may want to brand even your girlfriend with the famous logo for some reason, though you will surely pay dearly.

It’s also a great way to incorporate your love of gadgetry into some of your questionable bedroom activities. Hey, I’m not judging. Of course, it’s created from a ping pong paddle and a stencil. Hell have your own Mac/Apple cult, wearing black robes. Smack! “Thank you sir, may I have another?”

Pac-Man mini portable mod

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on August 28th, 2008

Pac-Man mini portable modMany of us have fond memories of Pac-Man as well as other Namco arcade classics, so what could be better then putting a whole bunch of Namco classics in a portable? That’s what modder Sam Thornley did. The portable Pac-Man Mini console is built around one of those Jakks Pacific Namco Arcade Classic systems, with a tiny 2.5-inch LCD display and it gets it’s power from a set of 4 rechargeable AA batteries.

He did a great job as the end result is a nice clean retro looking portable that will match your Wii. Thanks to a direct composite video connection, the screen image is super sharp. It will play Pac-Man, Galaxian, Rally-X, Bosconian, and Dig Dug.

Monster USB hub is a scary scarecrow for your PC

Monster USB hub is a scary scarecrow for your PCThis guy is kinda cute, but at night I think he might scare you and whisper to you in your sleep, telling you to plug in gadgets so he can feed and grow, using the energy to spin a web and eventually encase you in a cocoon. It will take up to 6 USB gadgets and it’s seventh leg goes to your computer. I guess some guy who really likes bugs had some spare time on his hands. It’s made from fabric and wires and is a great scarecrow to keep your kids away from the computer.

MacPack: The ultimate back to school retro geek backpack
Here’s something for old school Mac fans who need a little geek chic. The kind of geek chic that will throw your back out. Someone over at Instructables converted a 1988 Macintosh SE into a chiropractor’s dream. A chunky, spine dislodging MacPack. Basically you just hollow out a Mac and attach some straps. I’m sure you won’t stand out at all. And I can’t see anyone throwing rocks at you, trying to break the screen…

Assemble Your Own Pen is too much DIY

Assemble Your Own Pen is too much DIYI thought that buying prepackaged goods was supposed to make life easier, but I guess I was wrong. However those who are completely obsessed with DIY will probably appreciate this and find it fun. The Falter 2D pen makes you work to have your pen and write with it.

The DIY assembly kit even comes with a flat piece of iron that you’ll fold into your pen holder. At $39, you could probably save yourself some trouble and just lift a pen from the next cubicle. Leave 5 bucks if you feel bad you’ll still be better off. Apparently the Falter is handmade in Italy. Just not completed. That’s up to you. Me, I have enough to do already.

Guy merges PS2 guitar with Guitar Hero: On Tour

Guy merges PS2 guitar with Guitar Hero: On TourWhen most of us are jamming playing Guitar Hero with our regular sized guitars, the last thing you want to be doing is play on a little handheld. But when playing On Tour with a tiny handheld, it might help a whole lot to have a real guitar.

This modder hacked a wireless PS2 guitar to integrate with Guitar Hero: On Tour and now jams extra hardcore. He attached the PS2 guitar directly to the DS controller. He also added an FM transmitter so the music can stream through a home stereo, rather then the DS speakers. Great job! Check out the video below.

Mini Colecovision case mod hits ebay

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on August 19th, 2008

Mini Colecovision case mod hits ebayAtari and Nintendo seem to get all the glory when it comes to case mods, but there are those out there with a love of Colecovision as well. Probably those who love to play the Smurf game. This mini ColecoVision does everything the original console did, it’s just smaller. A full 50 square inches smaller and 1 pound lighter to be exact.

In addition to shrinkage, the modder also gave it some upgrades. Like composite, S-Video and RCA audio jacks. It also boasts an “intro skip” button that will let you skip past those annoying loading screens on Coleco games. The console includes a refurbished ColecoVision hand controller, a Donkey Kong game cartridge, a power supply, and a six foot, gold-plated, A/V cable. If you can’t live without this thing, you till have 9 hours. It’s currently bid up to $374.99.
