Smartphones are smart, but not very loud. Until now that is. SRS Labs has announced a whole new audio solution for smartphones that have built-in stereo speakers called SRS WideSurround. It will boost a handsets multimedia capability and provide a wider more detailed perspective for audio.

They say that it will be “an expansive personal surround field so, no matter if a user is holding the device in their hand or propping it up on a table or desk, the overall audio experience is notably more compelling, truly immersive and remarkably more engaging than traditional stereo.” So who is first to get it? Verizon users will be the first, with the new Samsung Continuum Galaxy S that’s available with the service for about $199.99 (on contract).

Dual displays have worked for portable consoles like the Nintendo DS and ebook readers, but what about cellphones? Normally that means a clamshell design, but the Samsung SCH-i400 Continuum features a secondary OLED display located right below the main one.

It’s called the “Ticker,” and it will show off any notifications and RSS updates, as well as weather updates and other info. The Ticker will automatically turn on when you grasp the bottom of the phone. There’s also a microSD memory card slot on the side which you can access without pulling out your battery.
