Once again Japan gets all the cool things. Like this latest, the Cinnabar Red PlayStation 2. It should be available on July 3rd, for the equivalent of $155 US. Perfect if you love rocking red, or if you have some sort of Hell theme happening. In fact, it would probably be at home in Hellboy’s house. Hell. Damnation. The damned. Red is the color of anger you know. I think it’s affecting me in a strange way.

We’ve seen our share of Nintendo NES clone systems, but as far as we know, this is the first mass-produced portable that can actually play those huge cartridges from the classic 8-bit gaming system. The FC Mobile portable plays original NES game carts. Take it and your huge cartridges everywhere and play.

You can play on the built-in 2.4-inch LCD screen, or on your television with the included AV cable. It takes three AA batteries, and plays audio through internal stereo speakers or using the headphone jack. Despite the obvious Famicom reference, seems like the console plays North American NES games, not Japanese Famicom games. Get one in black/silver or red/white. Sure, it looks silly playing NES games on a small portable, but what the hell.

This awesome NES casemod might be one of the smallest ever. The builder managed to squeeze a fully-functional NES console into the body of a single NES game cartridge. The Fami-Card began life as an original Super Mario Brothers cartridge. French modder Kotomi went to town and ripped out the guts, transplanting them with the innards of a NOAC (NES on a Chip) system clone.

This new small console has an NES cartridge slot, power and reset buttons, a pair of joystick ports and composite video and stereo audio outputs. It’s pretty amazing seeing a cartridge play a cartridge.

Here’s the latest in Chinese underground knock-offs. The “Cool Boy” wants to be a real living Gameboy so bad you can practically taste it. It manages to be completely un-cool despite the name and despite the fact that it’s a portable game system capable of playing a variety of old school 8-bit and 16-bit console titles.

Looks like the Cool Boy plays emulated NES and SEGA games. The kind you get from questionable sources in the dead of night, in a back alley, that usually have 120-in-1 cartridges that often violate copyrighted works from major game studios like EA, Nintendo and Disney. The system has a 2.4″ LCD screen with 480×240 resolution, and can even output to a TV via it’s built-in AV port.

We told you about the tiny Nintendo DS back in February. If that didn’t combine paper and Nintendo to your satisfaction, then how about making your own tiny Super Nintendo?

This Super Nintendo can fit in the palm of your hand so it is very portable. It was created by Chilean papercrafter ryo007, and the tiny SNES even includes a pair of even smaller controllers AND a set of game cartridges. If you want to try your hand at making one, ryo has provided the cut-out diagrams on DeviantArt. Excellent work. I like that one of the cartridges is Super Mario All-Stars.

The Atari 2600 brings back a lot of memories for some of us. And making a portable Atari can be fun, but this modder has really outdone himself with this model, giving the project some amazing style.

The Multari is a portable Atari 2600 with 32 games built right in. The chassis itself was made from vacuum-formed styrene plastic, with the usual colorful buttons and D-pad, there’s also a 5-inch display and a set of speakers. In fact, this is one of the nicest portable Ataris I’ve seen yet. Check out the video below.

Sadly, arcade games have been replaced by consoles and the like. But there’s still a whole lotta arcade love from those of us who grew up in the 70s/80s. The story goes like this. A guy goes to Japan, sees these new arcade cabinets and of course, wants one. Problem is it costs a fortune to import something that size, so he did what any geek with a toolbox would do, he built his own.

And it looks amazing too. It has a large Sony display on top, a car audio system built in, and it houses not only his PC, but a PS3, and Xbox 360 as well. Have you wet yourself yet? Good. Me too. Now, since I’m too lazy to build myself one, any volunteers?

I’ve done a few retro video game mods in my time, but I’ve never been crazy enough to put an NES in a sneaker. Thank God there are others out there who will do it so I can see.

This shoe has a fully-functional original Nintendo Entertainment System built in, so you can enjoy all of your classic favorites right from your foot. It’s obviously got sole. Though, I’d feel really weird playing the NES from a shoe. How’s that for a pair of 8-bit kicks? Wait, there’s only one.

Now there is another place that will take your old game console, if it’s collecting dust in some closet. Best Buy is willing to take it off your hands. One thing though. And it’s odd…This new service won’t let you just drop off your old hardware at the local store. You have to ship it off to them.

There must be something in the icing air lately. I thought that the R2-D2 cake we showed you last week was the coolest geek cake. But having a special place in my heart for the Atari 2600, I want to dig into this delicious cake made to look like the original Atari console.

What’s next? An NES and SNES cake? I hope so. I’m getting a sugar rush just looking at it in all it’s 8-bit glory. Ironically, the simple Pac-Man decorations along the side are an improvement on how that game looked on this console.

Here’s another cheap Chinese knock-off that fell off the back of the truck recently. I thought the PX-3600 was bad…These ripoff consoles are just getting stranger and stranger. This one may look like a PS3, but that’s where the similarities end.

First, it’s tiny and comes in clamshell packaging. You don’t even plug it into a television, and it’s got a little screen that pops out of the side. Yes, just like all of the other knock-offs, this one has the personality of a wet fart trapped in a paper bag. Check out a video review after the jump.

I’ve seen a ton of screwed up knock off consoles, but this one has to be the strangest. Is it an Xbox, PlayStation 2, 3, or something else? What can you say about a modern console that sports the classic 9-pin controller ports of an Atari 2600 or Vic-20? I can only surmise that crackheads are now included in the design process.

Notice the Bat-wing controllers. It’s made by Cheer-Tech Industries of Hong Kong and includes visual elements from several modern consoles, tweaking them just enough to keep them safe from copyright infringements. It will play a handful of built-in games and comes with two controllers, only one with a rumble feature. Right now, no one seems to know if it plays games from recent consoles, but I doubt it.
