By land or by sea: The Di-Cycle |
The Di-Cycle, by GBO Design is an amphibious bike designed for the city of Helmond in the Netherlands, because the city has just as many watery channels as it does actual roads. Therefore, the residents all want to make like amphibians, skimming across water.
The idea is that riders would be able to skim over the water just as if they were going across the land. Somehow I just don’t see that happening. It’s more likely to flip you over and fill your lungs with water as it keeps going, eventually depositing your corpse on the road your soul never made it to. It remains a concept for the moment thankfully.

When Moti Barzilay had to design something iconic in the Apple universe of products, something he felt was missing, the iShow was the end result. It’s a portable projector designed for Apple’s line of iPods, iPhones, and MacBooks.
It’s still a concept, but the latest Sphere Sound System rocks it’s name. Obviously aliens are designing gadgets on this planet. The entire music system is round, not just the speakers. It is copletely and utterly spherical. Even those backwards tin hat wearing believers that the Earth is flat can not deny the roundness of this thing. Plus every piece is designed with maximum function in mind.
You don’t see concepts based on peas everyday. Designer Lu Le was inspired by the pea-pod for this wireless “dynamic audio environment” Pea Speaker system, which has seven Bluetooth-enabled speaker spheres, that can be spread around a room for a hopefully awesome stereo sound. The idea is not to have a more perfect surround sound system, but to more completely fill an area with sound. It certainly makes sense and is a great way to have music everywhere. Recharging of the spheres would be through induction when in the ‘pod’. This concept has a very good chance of hitting the market very soon.
The Spark Lamp concept by Beverly Ng is an LED lamp that you can flip over during the day to recharge itself using solar power. It’s designed to educate the owner about their power consumption. The lamp sports integrated WiFi which wirelessly keeps track of you home’s power usage. When you turn the lamp on, it will change colors and flash to tell you what your home’s power consumption is.
Many of you are eagerly awaiting news on a Zune phone. Until that actually happens, take a look at this. Designed by Adam Huffman, the new Zune Contact concept comes loaded with a new user interface, a lickable super slim body, a 5MP digital camera and a full touch screen display. Unlike the
Look at this lamp. It wins you over just by doing nothing. Could be the work of an alien civilization and in all likelihood it powers a starship somewhere in a far off nebula. I would buy it in a heartbeat to give my place that Sci-Fi feel. Looks aside, the spherical shape and panels have a function, they adjust the lamp’s light levels to correspond with what’s coming in through your windows.
Frog Design has been busy re-inventing the light bulb, while Edison mumbles and rolls over in his grave. Frog is the legendary firm that has designed some of the first Apple computers, Sony TVs, and a whole lot of other neat stuff that you probably love.
Making it’s debut at the 2008 Good Design Expo,(That’s debatable) cellular provider Willcom’s Kuma Phone let’s you talk to a bears nuts while you apparently listen to the voice come out of it’s mouth. Just plain looks wrong and takes the human/bear relationship to places it should never go. It’s totally a real phone. Just one you wouldn’t want to use in public.
This concept is designed by Ashley Payne and called the Zune Bug. Think of it as a low-power light source that can stream music to guide you in the dark. Like an update to the classic night lite that’s been used forever to scare off monsters. It sports a light sensor, will turn on automatically in the dark and it will even change color depending on the mood of the music that is being played. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we see something like this go into production, minus the Zune aspect.
Whether you’re into the classics or just want it to look like you are, the Ode to Beethoven MP3 Player Speakers will bring a little Beethoven into your life. It is designed by UK artist Fiona Thomson, with the idea of combining classic artistic aesthetics with modern technology. More importantly, it lets you dock your mp3 player in a stone bust of Beethoven’s head, so you can look all classy while playing your AC/DC and Alice Cooper. Right now, it’s still just a concept, but hopefully it will be a reality soon and herald a new age of stone iPod docks.
Those who are always looking for the latest innovations in tailgating will want to take a serious look at the Manvan. Designed by Aimee LoDuca, this oversized behemoth of a van targets football fans who need more nachos, more beer and just plain more of everything.
It’s claimed that the Peugeot 888 is the “personal vehicle for the future Metropolis.” I’d have to agree. Created by designer Oskar Johansen from Norway, the car has room for two and all of your luggage, but the best part is that it can shape-shift. The Peugeot 888 will lie flat on the highway for stability and aerodynamics. Once you hit the city, it sits up for easy parking and road sharing.
If fire extinguishers were more like Bazookas, I think more people would volunteer for the job. Fire AND shooting stuff? Hell yeah! Shooting fires out? Even better. This concept is modeled on a light-weight gun design and is loaded with CO2 cartridges with a laser guidance system, so you can hit the target in an emergency.
