Ora Watch measures hours in inches

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on September 29th, 2009

Ora Watch measures hours in InchesThis measuring tape watch called the Ora watch is sadly just a concept and not real. It uses a measuring tape to display the time. The creator says that “It focuses on the display of time via an unconventional mode, by replacing the expected dial arrangement found in the vast majority of the mechanical watches with a set of three interwoven tapes—one to indicate the hour(s), one to indicate the minute(s), and one to indicate the day.”

We’re just saddened that we can’t actually buy the thing. But maybe some DIYer out there can make a version and offer it up for tons of money.

StressWatch will calm you with colors

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on September 27th, 2009

StressWatch will calm you with colorsWe live in stressful times. Traffic is stressful, so are long lines at the grocery store. So is your job, since your boss is always on your case. Oh and all of those bills. It’s enough to make you scream. Serenity now! The StressWatch can help. Maybe.

It’s a design concept that reads heart rate and body temperature data and then interprets them as levels of stress on the trippy screen. The black bar at the bottom is the stress line. And if the cool colors on the watch turn into hot pink, red or orange, man you are stressed. The idea is that it will help you know when you need to calm down.

Intel debuts concept notebook with four displays

Intel debuts concept notebook with four displaysHere’s a notebook for some extreme multi-tasking. Intel’s latest laptop outdoes them all with a large primary display, along with three sub-displays above the keyboard. These little OLED touchscreens will be able to display video, music playlists, whatever your wandering attention span desires.

They can work as a single screen or as one continuous surface (the “albums” in the video spill across multiple screens). It’s mainly a proof of concept intended to show that they’re working on these kinds of displays for their laptops.

Pet Care Robot

Pet Care RobotGoing out of town and leaving Fido behind? Why not leave the Pet Care Robot behind so that your pet can live in terror the entire time? The Pet Care Robot is a concept thank god. It’s a Wi-Fi controlled robot that can let you peek in on your pet and make sure everything is fine, using a web interface.

The interesting part is that this robot allows you to play fetch long distance, using a remote controlled ball that you can steer around the house, even while talking to your pet through a built-in speaker.

Lexus LF-Ch concept sports headrest-mounted iPhone docks

Lexus LF-Ch concept sports headrest-mounted iPhone docksThe Lexus name is all about luxury, so why not incorporate some iphone docks? That’s just what they’ve done with the hybrid Lexus LF-Ch Concept. They’ve added rear seat headrest-mounted iPhone docks. That should help keep your little hellions quiet on your next roadtrip.

Assuming you or your kids own an iPhone of course. But hey if you are driving a Lexus, I’m sure you can afford one or two iPhones. The LF-Ch also has storage in the rear seat armrests for small items like iPods, PDAs and cell phones.

Pac-Man Chair looks hungry

Pac-Man Chair looks hungryA chair in the shape of Pac-Man just makes perfect sense. Especially if your room looks like a maze from the game. It’s only a concept right now, but it’s perfect for geeks and retro arcade lovers.

It makes an artistic statement that says that we are all ghosts when lounging in Pac-Man’s mouth. Or perhaps some of us are ghosts and others power-pellets. Now, if only it could gobble up certain guests on command…

Power Bridge turns the power strip upside down

Posted in Power Strips by Conner Flynn on September 7th, 2009

Power Bridge turns the power strip upside downPower strips are convenient. Sadly, they are also ugly, putting all of your plugs in a row, with cords trailing everywhere. The Power Bridge is one of the best solutions we’ve seen, flipping the power strip over to keep your cords neatly tucked away.

It’s from designer Hyuk Jae Chang and it’s neat enough to even have on your desk. All of the wires come out in one spot, which you can turn to face any direction and a pivoting multi-directional power cord on the Bridge itself makes sure that all wires line up.

A bike that grows with your child

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on September 6th, 2009

A bike that grows with your childWe’ve seen sneakers that are designed to grow with your child, so why apply that concept to your kid’s bike? It’s a great idea, because kids outgrow everything, forcing you the parent to shell out more money for something else they can outgrow.

Why not have one bike that can grow with your kid? That’s the idea behind this conceptual bike that designers at Kilo Design are working on. The bike expands along the sizes needed for kids aged 6 to 12. That’s six years of never having to replace a bike.

Awesome PS4 console design

Awesome PS4 console designThe PS4 may be a long way off yet, but designer Tai Chiem already has all of the details worked out and it looks awesome. If only the PlayStation 4 could be like this. It sports a high end touch screen instead of the glossy body that the current generation has. And he’s even incorporated that touchscreen design into the controller, which is really cool.

The design would come in black or white. Hopefully that touchscreen material is scratch-resistant, otherwise your PS4 is going to look nasty in no time. Just to be clear, this is a concept, not an actual product. But we can dream.

Hangman lamp combines old-fashioned lynching with lighting

Hangman lamp combines old-fashioned lynching with lightingWe like unusual lamps here, but this one goes beyond morbid. Sure, these hangman lights are cool and creative, but would you really want these things hanging around above you? Maybe if you have a really dark sense of humor.

They might be good for Halloween, or to decorate your old west jail, but I just can’t see many people wanting to hang these. Thankfully, this is just a concept from designer Ji-youn Kim. What do you guys think? Would you hang these guys in your home?

Progress Bar Clock loads your day

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on August 23rd, 2009

Progress Bar Clock loads your dayIn a society that lives inside of their computers, it makes sense to incorporate some online features into our daily lives. Or maybe I’m just taking something that’s extremely geeky and trying to justify it. This concept from Mint Pass takes the familiar progress bar and turns it into a clock or timeline.

The orange tabs are labels that mark events for the current day. Just clip it onto the proper time and it’s there as a reminder. It’s a prototype and not for sale yet, but this one may have a chance at hitting the consumer market. The clock is equipped with 24 alarms that you can configure to sound at whichever time of day those tabs are placed.

Shacklie adds a handcuff to your umbrella

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on August 20th, 2009

Shacklie adds a handcuff to your umbrellaIs there anything worse than umbrella theft? Umbrella theives are the lowest form of life. You may not be aware of it, but umbrella theft accounts for nearly 80% of all theft in the U.S. Even though I just made that figure up, it still sucks to have your umbrella stolen and have to get soaked on the way home.

The Shacklie can help. It’s basically a lock or handcuff on the handle of the umbrella. This way you can secure your umbrella while it’s not in use. Maybe even catch a criminal and escort him to the police.

Black Hole Phone has inverse proportion for texting

Black Hole Phone has inverse proportion for textingWhen you want to input something into your cellphone, touch screens are all the rage these days, but this concept may turn that on it’s head. The Blackhole phone features a large display when you are reading a message, but it turns into a large keypad when you need to enter some text of your own. Which is convenient.

We don’t have a clue how it is supposed to do what it does, but we like it. The guess is that motion sensing technology transforms the digital display from a big screen to the key screen. Switching modes is as easy as reversing the handset.

All Area Shaver for the Sasquatch in you

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on August 17th, 2009

All Area Shaver for the Sasquatch in youDesigner Jonas Buck shows us this All Area shaver concept complete with some images of Ken dolls to show off just which hair on your body stays and which hair goes. If you are a caveman or Bigfoot, you now have one tool for all your hair.

The dots on the ken dolls(not shown) are placed strategically on the bodies at selected areas, representing survey results from 13 students from both genders. The question is this. Where should a male shave? All the typical areas have been dotted, which is why this shaver is called the All Area. Because it’s versatile. Sometimes it will function as a trimmer and with length attachments it can be used on longer hair.

Rocking chair to armchair in just 20 seconds

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on August 13th, 2009

Rocking chair to armchair in just 20 secondsRocking chairs are great for just kicking back and relaxing, but I don’t own one because I wouldn’t use it very often. I would just use it a bit, then go back to my armchair. Now if I could convert that rocker into an armchair, that would be perfect. “Fotel” by designer Peter Vardai does just that, and in only 20 seconds.

Optimus Prime ain’t jack if you can’t sit on him. Eat it Optimus. This design concept features a carbon fiber frame with springy and comfortable elastic bands on the seating surfaces. It looks pretty sweet and modern too.
