Handphone is slightly ridiculous

Handphone is slightly ridiculous
Remember when you were a kid and you played with fake phones? Or maybe you played with an imaginary phone, holding two fingers to the side of your head. I have news for you, you didn’t look as ridiculous as this guy.

The Handphone concept makes you look like a borg taking a business call. It sits on your hand, with a few wires and fingers leads, and turns your fingers into a portable cellphone device. You navigate and control the phone using natural gestures and voice commands. For Borg technology, the LCD on this thing is pretty lacking. No wonder Picard kicked their butts.

Cuusoo concept cellphone has detachable screen

Cuusoo concept cellphone has detachable screen
This cell phone concept seems to be imitating the Wii, as it’s all about attachments. Which makes for a very interesting device. Cuusoo has produced a concept that’s practical and well designed. Japan-based designer Marimo-san created the concept.

It’s a cell phone that would allow the user to remove the screen of the phone, allowing video phone calls on the go. Marimo-san has several versions of what various attachments might look like, including a widescreen PC-style to dual screen video viewer. It’s an idea that might speed up the convergence of the PC and the cell phone, so who knows, we may actually see this one in the marketplace.

HTC Diamond with ultra-high density display
The first “official” photos and specs for the HTC Diamond have now been leaked and it looks pretty sexy. It sports a 2.8-inch 640 x 480 pixel screen (that’s twice the lines of the iPhone in a smaller surface,) Windows Mobile 6.1 and 3G connectivity. Could this be the most important product of the year for HTC? Maybe so.

It seems like a pretty sweet cellphone, judging from the specs: Large 2.8 inch VGA display (640×480 pixel resolution), Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, Quadband GSM/GPRS/Edge and UMTS/HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0, 3.2megapixel camera with autofocus, Extra VGA camera in the front for video telephony, QWERTY keyboard, Qualcomm 528 Mhz CPU, 4 GB of internal memory plus a MicroSD slot, FM Radio, An accelerometer sensor like the iPhone has.

The cellphone EMF detector

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on April 30th, 2008

The cellphone EMF detector
Radiation and electromagnetic fields from cellphones can be dangerous. Plus, electromagnetic fields usually mean there’s a ghost around too, so it’s good to know when there might be one around you. Some say EMF is safe, others say it’s really dangerous. Why take the chance, when you can conduct your own research with this handheld EMF detector.

It will measure radio frequency radiation and extremely low-frequency magnetic fields and should be able to tell you which electronics in your home are the worst offenders. And if you get a reading where there are no electronics, then you probably have a ghost, in which case you’ll want to make like Scooby and Shaggy and get the hell out as quick as you can.

Toshiba’s 815T PB on Softbank robot phone

Posted in Toshiba by Conner Flynn on February 27th, 2008

Toshiba’s robot phone
Toshiba’s new 815T PB on Softbank, developed to coincide with a new show featuring robo-phones is freakishly weird, but we love it. This is what phones should aspire to be. We only hope that they don’t become self aware and drill into your skull, in order to take up permanant residence on your ear. We might all become servants to these things.

Transformer fans will no doubt wet their pants. This is the first mobile phone that you could actually use as a toy. Yes, this is real. Obviously the silver one is the good guy, the black one just looks mean. Not much more info at this time, but I hope other phone manufacturers are paying attention.

Zeki walkie-talkie with SMS and MP3 for kids

Zeki walkie-talkie with SMS and MP3 for kids
Here’s an interesting way to pimp out your toddler. Korean company YoungToys released a cellphone/digital toy aimed directly at kids and toddlers. “Zeki” uses Near Field Communication(NFC) technology to communicate between mom and kid, or kid and kid, up to an 80-meter distance. Some other features include mp3 playback, voice & video recording, SMS and alarm function and the ability to absorb kid germs.

Zeki also supports the exchange of data between devices, so kids can exchange songs and videos, or plot the demise of an adult. The $105 device is made from materials harmless to their rugrat bodies and the phone is apparently shielded against electromagnetic waves, so you do not have to worry about your kid’s brain being fried. This would go well with the Sweetpea MP3 player he/she has already drooled all over.

SIM card reader reads deleted text messages on your cell

SIM card reader reads deleted text messages on your cell
A New York company named BrickHouse Security wants to add a little spice to your marriage. The kind of spice that might get your stuff thrown out onto the lawn via a $150 SIM card reader that can read deleted text messages.

BrickHouse President Todd Morris wants you to know that once you delete a text message, they are not gone forever. He also wants you to be able to see your spouses or your kids deleted text messages to make sure there’s no funny business going on. Hell, $150 is probably cheaper then hiring a PI. So it’s either this, or go on that Cheaters show and show the world what a cheating sack of dung your spouse is.

Cell phone in your pocket or are you packing wood?

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on February 16th, 2008

Made from the best stuff on Earth
When we think of tech we picture a cold metal or plastic in silver or black usually. It’s the material that can be cold and impersonal. Some users would like a more organic natural alternative. Maybe something from nature. Something so simple can affect your mood dramatically, like having a well meaning but cold friend to dinner. The Chute Smartphone is natural, organic, and moody all in one.

The Chute is like any other Smartphone inside, but it’s the shell, designed with bamboo, that makes all the difference. Bamboo is actually lighter and stronger than plastic. Better yet, it’s completely biodegradable and far more eco friendly than plastics and metals.

Philips 9@9j has a AAA backup battery

Posted in Philips by Conner Flynn on February 14th, 2008

AAA backup battery
Even though we don’t see them in most devices, AAA batteries can be pretty darn useful, aside from powering remote controls and toys. Philips thinks so too, that’s why the Philips Xenium 9@9j has a AAA battery slot at the base. This is very likely the first cellphone that supports a AAA battery. It supposedly gives it up to three hours of talk time. It still has the standard lithium ion rechargeable battery, but the AAA is a backup.

It does add some bulk, but what is a backup worth to you? The 9@9j should be around in April. The technology is from the Israeli firm Techtium, and they are calling it Backupower. If your main battery goes dead, the backup battery takes over.

The Wii phone a step closer to reality

Posted in Wii, Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on January 31st, 2008

Wii phone
We told you about the possibility of a Wii phone awhile back, but now thanks to one clever fellow, we may be one step closer. It’s a combination of a Wiimote and a DoCoMo cellphone all slapped together with geek love.

Maybe this will make Nintendo rush one to market sometime soon, but I doubt it. The wrist strap is a nice touch. Just in case you get a call that requires you to want to throw the thing. This is one phone that would give the iPhone some competition. Needless to say we love this phone and want one yesterday.

Skyfire promises better browser
Skyfire is a new mobile browser that promises a nicer browsing experience on your mobile phone as well as speed and simplicity. Right now it’s in private beta mode and just available to those with a US phone number.

According to the site, the browser can go anywhere and get anything, which would make it a nice step up in mobile browsing. Supposedly it just like browsing on your PC. Check out a demo of Skyfire after the jump. If it’s even half as good as they claim, users are going to be very happy indeed. At least it has a cool name. Things always sound cooler with fire.

The P-Per Cellphone concept is sexy

Posted in Concepts, Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on January 28th, 2008

p-per Cell phone conceptP-Per was awarded for the Red Dot Concept Design. It’s designed by Chocolate Design Agency and is a simple mobile phone concept with features that were supposed to be incompatible: simple, advanced, green and unique.

Modeled after the E-Paper slap bracelet, it’s made of only 4 layers of sustainable materials, the “1 function, 1 part, 1 material” rule makes it easy to disassemble the materials for recycling. Too good to be true? Maybe not. This might be the best phone ever. It has a transparent display for camera mode and a browser that spans the entire surface of the display. Check out a video here and be thoroughly impressed.
