Scroll concept device is out there

Scroll concept device is out there
If the scroll had survived biblical times, our devices would look a lot like this thing here. This is the so-called “Scroll” device created by 13 Tech Design. It’s packing a touchscreen-based cellphone, a 10 megapixel camera and 1080p camcorder, various media-playing features, built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, and a full-fledged computer that runs on Vista or XP.

If God chose to deliver a few more commandments, they would be written on this. Not stone. As far as concepts go, this one is pretty out there. I’m just not sure if we are ready to go back to the scroll.

TouchMan emotion cell phone concept

TouchMan emotion cell phone concept
The TouchMan cellphone concept is interesting because it can actually become a piece of furniture that allows you to communicate in a more personal way with others. That’s because the device allows for the visual sharing of emotions. Think of it as a combination screensaver, instant messenger and…aquarium.

That’s right, you can watch your contacts like fishes in an aquarium on the touchscreen. They would change color and activity according to their current moods and availability. Very bizarre indeed, but it has a lot of potential. The docking station will charge the main station and the cellphone at the same time, and when the cellphone is disconnected, the main device goes into a sleep mode.

Woman buried with cell nags husband Via texting
Sadie Jones died five years ago and was buried with her most her cell phone. Her widower, Frank Jones, claims to be receiving text messages from beyond the grave. Shortly after his wife’s death, Frank claims he missed a call on his mobile, which didn’t even ring.

He claims the call was from his own home number, but there was nobody in the house. But when he entered the house, it smelled like cigarettes and her perfume. Frank also claims that his late wife has been sending them all SMSes from beyond the grave with words that Sadie would say, but no number. Isn’t that just like a wife? She nags you through life, nags you from the grave and just like when she was living, what the hell can you really do about it but try to block it out?

Report: Cell phone usage goes up, landline goes down

Posted in Mobile Phones by Shane McGlaun on April 4th, 2008

Cell Phone Usage RisingA new report came out today that confirms something many of us already knew—cell phone usage is growing. The gains cell phones are making is at the expense of the old landline. Many people, particularly younger phone users, are going all mobile and eschewing the landline.

A poll from Harris Interactive shows that 1 in 7 adults use a cell phone exclusively. The report also shows that 1 in 5 have no landline. The survey polled 9132 adults in all. I for one didn’t have a landline for years, using cell phones exclusively. I only got a landline recently and I never use it. I only have it to get DSL service and make the occasional fax. I bet lots of landline users are the same way.

Alcatel OT-V770A Playboy cell phone
Sometimes it’s hard to…look…at…the…product. But slapping a company name across boobs like that certainly gets my attention. Yes. Yes it does. Oh yeah, the phone.

Alcatel recently showed its OT-V770A Playboy-branded cell phone at CTIA 2008. Some features of the OT-V770A include: 1.3 megapixel camera, Media player, Full-screen video playback, 10MB internal memory, microSD memory card slot. No word on price yet, but it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg considering the specifications.

Nokia 5000 eco-friendly cell phone
Here’s a new cell phone from Nokia that’s got a lot of features and is relatively cheap at the same time. The Nokia 5000 boasts a high-res QVGA display plus a 1.3 megapixel camera, MP3 player with recording capabilities and FM radio, bluetooth connectivity, GPRS, and it supports Nokia Xpress Audio Messaging. Expect it sometime in the 2nd quarter for about $140.

Nokia 7070 Prism clamshell
Nokia announced a new clamshell in it’s Prism line. The Nokia 7070 Prism comes with a 128 x 160 TFT display, 11MB of internal memory, MP3 ringtones/24polyphonic, GPRS connectivity and light indicators. It’s a basic phone, with no camera, no Bluetooth and no memory slot.

This sort of phone is ideal for those who want to use it only to make calls and use SMS, pretty much. The 7070 Prism is expected to be shipped in Q3 of 2008 with a price of €50. Despite the fact that it’s got no frills, it does have a cool geometric design with external light effects , which reminds me of some of those old Rubik’s puzzle games.

Sky Quilt cell phone looks cottony soft
Sky just introduced the IM-S310L slider handset known as the Quilt in Korea. The idea here is that it actually sorta resembles a quilt. It should appeal to grandmothers and other women who long to squeeze the Charmin, with it’s diamond patterns and a look comfortable enough to touch.

Features include: 2.4″ QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel camera, LED lighting, MP3 playback, Electronic dictionary, and BankOn service. The Sky Quilt will be available in white, black and pink colors, retailing for under $400.

Another cell phone disguised as cigarettes

Another cell phone disguised as cigarettesSomehow I don’t think Marlboro endorsed this, though I could be wrong. This cell phone in disguise is similar to the one we told you about in January. It will cost you about $175 in China. It’s got dualband GSM, a microSD card slot, and can even play MP3’s.

From the front, it looks like an authentic pack of Marlboro Lights and it will even hold real cigarettes in it. One cool function is the side-mounted camera feature. People will never suspect that you are taking pictures with your smokes. So it doubles as a spy camera too.

ZJ268: The devil’s cell phone

ZJ268: The devil’s cell Phone
This is probably a hoax, but if not then I’m sure this was given to Tenacious D by the devil, so they can keep in touch and have more rock-offs. Aside from being obviously horny, it claims to have a stunning 666 days of standby time.

I don’t know about that, but this handset has a 32,800mAh “super battery” and features a dual SIM, GSM900/DCS1800 support and a 3″ display. It retails for $128, but you can probably work something out where you save the money and sign away your soul.

Mobile device takes search to the extreme

Mobile device takes search to the extreme
This could very well be the future way to search on a mobile device. This futuristic search tool uses a touch screen, built-in camera, scanner, WiFi, Google Maps, Google Search, image search and what you have is the most comprehensive search experience known to man.

All you would have to do is look at a building through the device and image search results would pop right up. Then touch a floor on the building and you have more even more details pop up. This would help tourists especially. All you need to do is look at any object, a car, animal, landmark, and you are armed with the relevant information. That means you’ll never be lost and you will basically know everything about everything.

CB Radios + Bluetooth, looks like we got us a convoy

CB Radios get Bluetooth
It’s amazing that the CB radio has not already been given the Bluetooth treatment. Well, now there is a Bluetooth-enabled CB radio, so the CB can keep on truckin’. 10-4 good buddy. Cobra Electronics 29 LTD BT CB radio is Bluetooth-enabled, allowing truckers everywhere(and others of course) to receive cell phone calls wirelessly into the CB unit.

It even comes with a noise canceling microphone perfect for truckers. Those trucks aren’t exactly quiet you know. Tactile controls let the driver feel where the dial currently is in its rotation, so the driver no longer has to take his eyes off the road. The 29 LTD BT will be available this summer for $189.95. Until then, I’ll catch ya on the flip side. Keep the bugs off yer glass and the bears off yer tail.

Second Life coming to mobiles

Second Life coming to mobiles
Soon, Cell phone owners won’t have to be left out of the Second Life world as Vollee plans on rolling out technology which makes it possible to play the game Second Life on 3G handsets. This thanks to Vollee’s streaming media service. This does seem like a tall order, with Second Life being very graphics intensive. It would require a LOT of streaming data.

So, it might be a good idea to start thinking about an unlimited data plan unless you want a huge bill at the end of the month. Only time will tell what the end result of this will be, but at least someone is trying.

Kiss phone detects the intensity of virtual kisses

Kiss phone detects the intensity of virtual kissesApparently cell phone kissing is a hot activity in Japan. I had no idea. The kiss phone makes it easier to kiss your loved one from a distance via mobile. This isn’t just video and making loud smoochie sounds either, the kiss phone from PROinvention can detect the intensity of the kiss. It senses not only the pressure you use, but also the heat of your lips and how hard you press or suck. (I’d say you suck pretty hard if you buy this phone)

Warning: Creepy territory ahead. Your partner, who also obviously has a Kiss Phone, just presses their lips against the fake plastic mouth of the phone…and they will feel the partner’s simulated mouth on theirs. Yes, it has now come to sticking your mouth on plastic objects. If you like, you can also leave kisses on the answering machine, and replay them over and over, until your lips hurt.

Kenetic cell phone concept powered by your moves

Posted in Concepts by Darrin Olson on February 14th, 2008

Atlas Kinetic Cell Phone ConceptHere’s a pretty cool conceptual idea for a cell phone powered by kinetic energy. The Atlas Kiinetic Cell Phone has a mechanism in the center behind some glass that you can actually see work. As you move the phone around, a weighted piece rotates around to wind up a spring which powers the phone.

According to the designer, only a few times of turning the phone upside down and back will power it up. This same kinetic type of mechanism works great to power watches and is actually not that uncommon. The only difference is that watches for the most part need very little power to run compared to a phone.
