Acer introduces new business laptops

Acer TravelMate 6593I am surprised that days after CES 2009 ended Acer is announcing new notebooks. Perhaps the computer firm feared that launching a couple machines that lack any really compelling features during the show would have meant they went unnoticed.

The two new machines are the TravelMate 6593 and the TravelMate 6493. Both of the notebooks can be used with the new Acer ezDock II or II+ for easy docking in the office or at home. Both machines share the same 1280 x 800 resolution as well.

UPS goes label free with new printer

UPS goes label free with new printerThis thing may look like an X-Man accessory or strange sci-fi gun that straps on your arm and sucks your precious lifeforce with every round it fires, but no, as cool as that would be, it’s just something UPS is using so they can get all label-free. It’s HP’s Handheld sp400 All-in-One, which scans barcodes and prints sorting info directly onto boxes with quick-drying ink. No paper labels are required at all. UPS has been testing it out at a shipping center in Orlando, where they reportedly used it on 40,000 boxes with not a single error. Of course there was that one guy they pants in order to tattoo his butt cheeks, but that doesn’t count.

This device alone will make the company much greener. It will replace several larger, less green pieces of equipment like a giant thermal printer, PC, monitor and scanner. According to UPS the company will save 92,456 hours, 1,338 tons of paper and 3,807 tons of carbon emissions a year. That’s pretty big.

NES business card holders
What better way to proclaim your love of 8-bit gaming then with these NES business card holders. I’m not sure how serious you’ll be taken when you whip it out and hand out your card, but at least a little bit of Nintendo is with you at all times.

They retail for $8.80 with your choice of Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Ice Climber or Balloon Fight and Famicom controller versions. Judging by the pic, these are more of a NES glaucoma test.

Microsoft drags Yahoo kicking and screaming to altar

And the show down continues…Yahoo rejects Microsoft’s take over bid, Microsoft looks like it will go forward with it anyhow:

“It is unfortunate that Yahoo! has not embraced our full and fair proposal to combine our companies. Based on conversations with stakeholders of both companies, we are confident that moving forward promptly to consummate a transaction is in the best interests of all parties.

We are offering shareholders superior value and the opportunity to participate in the upside of the combined company. The combination also offers an increasingly exciting set of solutions for consumers, publishers and advertisers while becoming better positioned to compete in the online services market.

Yahoo: “no thanks” to Microsoft’s $44.6 billion offer

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2008

Yahoo saying “no thanks”You can be pretty certain we haven’t heard the last from Microsoft regarding their offer to buy Yahoo!, but for now Yahoo! is saying a “no thanks” to the $44.6 billion buyout offer. Jerry Yang and other directors say Yahoo! are seeking at least $40 a share, or nearly $60 billion. Microsoft may not be willing to pay.

The bean counters of Yahoo! feel the number is on the low end. Others would like to get cozy with Google in order to improve search revenues, despite the fact that there may be some antitrust implications with that. Stayed tuned on this one. Things are getting very interesting.
