Batpod photographed: The Dark Knight’s bike
The Batpod is Batman’s motorcycle in the latest movie and it’s a head turner. But is it cool? While sweet looking in it’s way, it’s not exactly leaving us awestruck. It’s black, fat, and ready to go medieval on the Joker, but how does it turn with those thick tires?

The steering seems to be based on the thinner tire at the back. One thing is certain, Batman’s cape is going to get caught in those wheels. You can see more of the Batpod when Dark Knight is released on the 17th of July. I’m sure it will look more badass in the film.

2020 Hybrid Bike fights smog, looks like a toy
Jamie Tomkins 2020 hybrid bicycle is a concept vehicle that came out of a GE Plastics Automotive competition. The design addresses China’s pollutions problems, since it would be constructed from cheap metals and plastics, plus the design should capture the hearts of Chinese motorists. You know, since it looks like a toy and all. It seems like a natural evolution. As a kid, you have your Big Wheel, then when you grow up you graduate to this two wheel version.

Electric Bike Train: Ride like ducks in a row

Electric Bike Train: Ride like ducks in a row
The price of gas being what it is, and considering what it will reach, suddenly all kinds of personal transport concepts are looking more promising. Take the Electric Bike Train for instance. In a world of skyrocketing gas prices, it’s the perfect electric bike for an entire large family.

It’s designed by Jiang Qian, and while I can’t find anything about just how many bikes can be linked up, I would guess quite a few. The front wheel connects to the two rear tires of the next unit. See, even when gas is unaffordable, you can still listen to your kids bitch and whine and ask “Are we there yet?”.

Bi-Cycle: For the couple that’s going nowhere

Bi-Cycle: For the couple that’s going nowhere
This isn’t the first bike for two, but on those bikes the riders are generally both facing forward. No, the Bi-Cycle is making a different statement. It speaks of so many relationships today.

Couples who are together, but drawn apart. Those who stay together, even though they are headed in opposite directions. Or, just maybe, they cant stand the site of each other at this point. I’m thinking this bike could be either very therapeudic, or simply distance you further. In the end, this bike will have you both in the hospital, or in the morgue, so I guess the point is moot.

Yamaha Deus Ex Machina concept bike

Yamaha Deus Ex Machina concept bike
This Yamaha-branded Deus Ex Machina concept motorcycle was dreamed up by Jake Loniak, an Art Center Pasadena student. It obviously looks awesome. Like a robot and a vehicle all in one. Since it’s a concept, Jake went a little crazy with the specs. It will be powered by ultra-capacitors and doped nano-phoshpate batteries (like those in hybrid cars). 36 pneumatic muscles and 2 linear actuators are set along a spine consisting of seven vertebrae, and that’s what keeps it in control.

Another cool touch is that the helmet is pneumatically attached for ease-of-use. Jake claims that his design can reach a top speed of 75mph, I’m just not sure how well protected a human would be in this thing. I do know that I want to see it in action NOW.

The Hamburglar’s getaway vehicle

The Hamburglar’s getaway vehicle
This is obviously the Hamburglar’s getaway vehicle. Frankly, I’m surprised we don’t see this kind of thing more often, since Harley’s are a symbol of the American dream. Judging by the hoardes of obese Fast Food enthusiasts out there, the only thing more American is obesity. Which makes this a much desired vehicle.

Hamburger enthusiast Harry Sperl of Florida took a look at his Harley and his collection of burger collectibles. This is the result. The Hamburger Harley. Let the fatties begin fighting over it, while Grimace and Ronald laugh hysterically. It’s got all the fixings, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, buns and patty. The top bun flips up to access to the seat, and the handlebars have a tray with a burger and fries.

iPhone Bike Mount: watch movies from your ambulance
I can understand wanting some tunes while riding your bike. But watching movies while you pedal away is probably not a great idea. The up side is, you’ll have something to do while the EMTs are trying to untangle your legs from your bike spokes.

Obviously, the iPhone Bike Mount is not going to improve your life. All it can really do is foreshadow your asphalt demise as your eyes are always drawn to your beautiful gadget. This particular form of assisted suicide will only cost you $14.99. And when you reach those pearly gates and they ask you what the last thing you saw was, you can tell them it was Desperate Housewives. It’s so pathetic that you might actually get a second chance. Maybe.

MonoTracer is the jet of bikes

MonoTracer is the jet of bikes
Why go with a traditional motorcycle, when you can ride into the future on this $82,350 glass/kevlar/carbon/steel MonoTracer bike? It features a fully enclosed cabin which reduces drag and helps keep pebbles and bugs out of your face. The MonoTracer’s 130hp BMW engine goes 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and hits speeds up to 155mph.

So the question is, if you are fully enclosed inside of this speed machine, what do you do at stop lights if you cant put your feet down? Apparently it has little wheels that pop out for parking. Admittedly, it could be faster. And it could have an airbag or two, but the future isn’t about wimpy safety. It’s about coolness and a Utopian look that ain’t cheap.

Running-powered bike is ridiculous

Running-powered bike is ridiculous
I don’t care who you are, you’re going to look silly riding running this thing. To make things worse, it isn’t a true bike, but rather a tricycle. The idea here is that there are no pedals, so this thing is fueled by running and a sore crotch.

When you pick up enough speed, hop on the foot holds and coast. The video below is pretty funny. What this thing amounts to is a bike sized frame being rammed up your crotch. I have no more words.

The XO Move concept bike moves us

The XO Move concept bike moves us
It looks like a cross between a transformer and a weird futuristic pod on wheels. The idea is that when parked, it will transform and lock up easily for security. Another great selling point is that it’s adaptable to user needs, capable of carrying one or two people and even has a variable wheel base for more road stability.

Who knows when we’ll see something like this on the roads, but it’s a great idea and more importantly it looks awesome. I’m all for anything that makes the world look more like a Sci-Fi flick. It beats the hell out of a moped.

Dr. Seuss called, he wants his bike back
Ok. This one is pretty self-evident. It’s a bike that has had it’s wheels replaced with shoes. Yeah…Ok…See, this is what happens during a night of drugs and bike building. I like it, but at the same time, I really want this guy to turn the bike upside down, crank the pedals, and start kicking his own ass. Video below.

Is frog-inspired design the future of biking?

Posted in Concepts, Outdoors, Personal Transport by Conner Flynn on October 1st, 2007

Frog inspired bike design conceptDesigner Alex Suvajac apparently thinks so. Obviously frogs inspire him. The result is a sleek concept track bike that looks a lot like an aerodynamic racing amphibian on two wheels. It is as much a work of art as it is a bike, blending space age and technological looks with nature.

I’m not sure about leaning that far forward to hold onto the handlebars. Then again, this beauty is obviously built for speed and since “being one with nature” is obviously the theme, why not lean into it and merge with the frame. Hopefully, that doesn’t mean swallowing a bug or two along the way. As cool as this bike is, it remains just a concept for the moment. It is however, proof that nature has a lot to offer when combined with technology. Especially aesthetically.
