Hands on with Rebit Backup solutions

Posted in Review by Darrin Olson on October 3rd, 2009

rebit backup driveWe’ve been hearing about Rebit and their backup solutions from as far back as October of 2007, and our time to try out one of these devices was far overdue. For this review we got a chance to review a portable backup solution from Rebit which boasts a “ridiculously simple backup” process, and they did not disappoint.

SETUP
Setting up the backup system was about as easy as it could be. We simply unpacked the small, slim portable drive and USB cable and plugged it in to our computer. After a couple of automatically prompted approvals in our Windows Vista system the thing just started doing its job of backing up all the files on the hard drive of our computer. The entire process from opening the box until it started working was under 3 minutes. The drive has a dual-headed USB cord so a separate power supply is not necessary if a single USB port does supply enough power, but in our case a single USB 2.0 connection was all it took to power the device and transfer data.

DiskGO BackUp USB Flash DriveAbout the size of a quarter, the DiskGO flash drive comes in 1GB to 16GB capacities. The most interesting thing about it is the Dmailer Backup software installed on it. It allows users to create an encrypted profile and set redundant file backups to the external hard drive. You can also archive past versions of files as they are modified for access later.

With Dmailer Backup, users can also back up files to a personal online “cloud” that can be accessed from any computer connected to the Internet using a simple, search-engine type interface. Dmailer Backup doesn’t require any installation and is Mac and PC compatible. You can pre-order today and it will ship early next week.

Clickfree cable automates data backup for any USB hard drive

Posted in Storage by Shane McGlaun on January 5th, 2009

Clickfree TransformerOne of the problems with backing data up to an external hard drive for many users is that they either forget to execute the backups or they don’t know how to choose the files to backup to the hard drive. Some drives include software that automates the backup process, but the user still has to choose the files that are backed up.

Clickfree has a new cable that connects to your PC via USB and then the external USB hard drive connects to the cable. Once installed the cable automates every aspect of the backup process from selecting the files to actually starting the backup itself.

Apple rolls out Time Capsule wireless backup

Posted in Apple, Backup Solutions, MacWorld 2008, Storage, Wi-Fi by Darrin Olson on January 15th, 2008

Apple Time Capsule for backing up data wirelessly from your MacAs part of the announcements at the MacWorld keynote speech today, Steve Jobs introduced the new Apple Time Capsule - a appliance designed to help facilitate wireless, automatic data backups from all the Macs in your home. The device works with machines running the Leopard OS along with the Time Machine software to automatically create back ups of everything on your Mac computer, hourly if you would prefer, and from multiple different Macs.

The Time Capsule coincides well with the launch of the MacBook Air since one of the common needs for an optical drive is to back up data. Since the Air doesn’t have an internal CD or DVD drive the Time Capsule makes a nice solution to provide wireless data backups to the notebook. The integrated software lets users look through history for lost files or even restore the system to a previous point in time.

Polaroid Media Backup CGA-02540The digital photography age hasn’t been kind to old school titans like Polaroid. The creators of the instant photo have taken a beating as digital cameras and photo quality printers hit the market and eliminated the need for dropping off your canister of film at the local photo department. However, this latest announcement from the company shows that there’s still innovation happening in their R&D department.

The Polaroid Media Backup CGA-02540 is perfect for anyone you know that is technophobic when it comes to downloading or transferring photos from one computer to another. When you plug this unit into your system’s USB it automatically searches for any digital photos, copies them to its 40 GB of storage and voila, instant backup. That’s it. No software to learn, no extra cables to clutter up your drawers, it all comes down to Polaroid’s ClickFree software.

It comes …
