AT&T confirms cheaper data plan discussionsRalph de la Vega from AT&T has confirmed that the company has in fact been looking at lowering the cost of data plans. Instead of cutting the cost of unlimited access, the company plans to introduce lower priced plans with limited bandwidth.

“Right now we continue to study what is the best thing that is available, not just from an iPhone point of view, but what you can do to stimulate additional demand,” said de la Vega, adding, “[w]e view Apple as a strategic partner for us, a very good partner to have now and into the future.”

Posted in AT&T by Shane McGlaun on May 20th, 2009

acerone-sbIn Europe, the practice of subsidizing notebooks and netbooks on mobile carriers is very common. In the US, the practice is still relatively unknown. RadioShack offers a netbook bundled with mobile broadband, but it is one of the few such offers in the States.

AT&T has announced that it will be expanding its subsidized netbook offer and rolling the products out to its stores nationwide. The new expanded lineup will include Acer, Dell, and Lenovo netbooks all bundled with mobile broadband plans.

AT&T thinking about cheaper iPhone plans?WWDC approaches. You know what that means. Apple rumors galore. Today’s Apple rumor has BusinessWeek saying that AT&T is working on cheaper iPhone data plans. We don’t have many details, so we don’t know just how it would work.

One popularly-discussed option is a $20 “limited-access” plan which could be potentially offered alongside a cheaper iPhone to be introduced at WWDC. The big question is, what exactly does “limited access” mean? If it won’t allow you to do anything fun, no one will care.

AT&T GoPhone gets unlimited calling plan

Posted in AT&T by Shane McGlaun on May 11th, 2009

gophone-sbMost of us will agree that contracts required to get mobile phones today are not how we would prefer things work. I always wanted cellular service that worked like my old landline. I pay for what I use and if I don’t like the service, I change at will.

The closest we get to that sort of service with mobile phones are the pay-as-you-go plans like the AT&T GoPhone. AT&T has announced that the GoPhone now has an unlimited calling option that lets you call all you want for $3 per day.

Verizon and Apple working on possible iPhone deal

Posted in Verizon by Shane McGlaun on April 27th, 2009

iphone3g-sbI love my iPhone, but I don’t feel the same way about the AT&T network the device is tied to. The biggest issue as a user of AT&T’s rural networks is that 3G coverage is very lacking and plain EDGE service can be hard to get in many locations while Verizon and Alltel offer seamless coverage in the same areas.

Back in 2007 when the iPhone first launched we mentioned that Verizon had passed on the iPhone when Apple asked them about working together on the device. According to USA Today Apple and Verizon are in talks again about bringing the iPhone to the Verizon network. The newspaper cites high-level sources that say the two companies are in discussions to bring a LTE version of the iPhone to the Verizon network.
