Giant Atari Joystick Lamp is the ultimate in nerd lighting

Posted in Lamps by Conner Flynn on January 6th, 2009

Giant Atari Joystick Lamp is the ultimate in nerd lightingIt sounds wrong, but I’ll just say it. I’ve never seen a joystick so huge in my life. Now that I have I want one. This has to be the most awesome lamp ever for a bachelor geek. You can make one just like it with a little hard work and some nerd enthusiasm.

You’ll need the enthusiasm as this DIY project is a bit more time consuming then some others. The creator was able to get it done with just a small supply of basic tools. If you have a band saw or a scroll saw, you should be able to knock one out faster. Check out the shade too. It’s brimming with retro Atari cartridge art.

Tetris & Breakout piggy banks makes saving fun again

Tetris & Breakout piggy banks makes saving fun againBack in the day it cost just one quarter to play your favorite arcade machine. Well, now you can play two Atari arcade classics for just one penny. They aren’t totally faithful to the original arcade machines, but hey it only costs a penny and you get to save that penny. A penny played is a penny earned.

Every coin you drop in starts a new game, which is much cooler then say, dropping your coins in a bank shaped like a pig. These aren’t easy to find outside of Japan, but Strapya World is taking pre-orders and they will ship them worldwide. They’ll cost you $39.90.

LED boombox wrist watch

LED boombox wrist watchThis watch is great for Boom-Box enthusiasts whose arms are too frail to carry around the real thing. Flüd’s Boombox watch looks like an actual tiny version of the Boom-Boxes of yesterday. The watch even features an old school 7-segment red LED display that looks authentic to the period. Unfortunately those small speakers don’t pump out any tunes. The Boombox watch is available in shiny silvertone or gunmetal grey for $90. Unlike the real thing, half of it’s weight isn’t due to D cell batteries.

Optime Strategies’ retro arcade gaming table

Optime Strategies’ retro arcade gaming tableSome of us miss the days when you had to actually venture out of the house and head to the arcade to play games. Ah, brings back memories of poorly lit, smoke filled rooms filled with the beeps and blips of virtual deaths and level starts. Quarters flowed like wine, which we did not drink, but poured willingly down the slotted throats of our electronic masters. The Optime Strategies video gaming table will take you back in time my friend.

It’s powered by a built in PC and comes preloaded with over 1700 vintage games including all your favorites like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Frogger, all made possible by software developed by a group called MAME. It’s the real deal. The graphics and music files have been downloaded directly from the original arcade versions making them 100% authentic. The only way it gets more authentic is if you spill some beer on it and add a cigarette burn. The price is the only thing that is lame at $5,180.

Space Invaders bendable keyboard

Posted in Keyboards by Conner Flynn on September 3rd, 2008

Space Invaders bendable keyboardThere’s nothing like shooting some Space Invaders who are trying to take over the world. It used to be that we popped a few quarters in the machine and shot them all to hell. These days it’s all about buying merchandise that bears the likeness of the 8-bit invaders. Some of which is actually practical.

Take this awesome looking bendable keyboard for example. It manages to be completely flexible while displaying the invading army, which is great for those on the go. It’s sealed, dustproof and spill-proof. If you have an accident, just easily wipe off the keys. Looks like it comes in black/white and pink/white. It will only cost you $39.

Retro Space upgrades the classic arcade cabinet

Retro Space upgrades the classic arcade cabinetCreated by Martjin Koch, the Retro Space pays honors the classic arcade cabinets of the past. It’s a nicely designed cabinet that fits right in today and would also be right at home in a smoky arcade of the 80′s. But it’s got more then looks going for it. It also features arcade-quality Sanwa joysticks and the buttons are mounted on an anodized aluminum control panel.

Of course the layout supports classic 1 & 2 person games and even has the very necessary trackball. Here’s the cool part, it includes over 100 licensed arcade classics AND suite of emulators. If that’s not enough, you can use it as an HD media jukebox for your music collection with 1080p video playback on a 24-inch 1920×1200 monitor. We want one. Who knew a yellow arcade machine could be so sexy?

Turntable Watch from Tokidoki is retro cool

Turntable Watch from Tokidoki is retro cool
It doesn’t get more 80′s then this. The Tokidoki company has come up with this nice looking watch that outdoes the turntable watch we told you about many months ago.

It ups the retro pop feel with vibrant colors and a nice 80s style. It makes me feel like cranking some Huey Lewis and the News while messing around on my hoverboard. The vinyl face rotates as each second ticks by. The time is displayed on the left side, looking like a radio dial. Stainless steel with leather strap. My geek mind is convinced that if you wear something this outrageously retro, Doc Brown will show up in his DeLorean. Which is why I’m getting one.

Giant LED clock shelf is all about time and your stuff

Giant LED clock shelf is all about time and your stuff
Here’s a neat large LED clock that also doubles as a bookshelf and holds your stuff. Pretty nifty space saving idea. The area not taken up by shelf space contains LED strips that act as a clock. And when you look for the time, you’ll always see your stuff. Whether it’s your prize Spiderman statue, porn award or even your mint condition Ewok village, it will be displayed in style. I think Lucas in Carbonite would look swell above this thing.

ZVUE’s 1GB Journey DAP
You’re bound to either love this one or hate it. Be sure to let us know where you stand. ZVUE’s 1GB pre-loaded Journey MP3 player is of course decked out like an ’80s Journey Album cover on the outside.

Inside, you get 22 Journey tracks pre-loaded. 11 new, 11 that you’ve been sick of for years. It’s like buying Journey’s greatest hits album and getting a DAP as well. At $39.88, that’s like a $1.80 per song. So, do you want one? Or will you touch and go your separate ways?

Retro Space Invaders headphones

Retro Space Invaders headphones
Who doesn’t love Space Invaders? Answer: Those being invaded of course. Say you’re chillin’ in your room, by the gentle light of your Space Invaders lamp. Just outside your window, the moonlight gently illuminates their latest message to Earth. Soon the invasion will begin. But you don’t need to worry about that. Not after selling out your entire race. You will be spared and given your own island in the Bahamas.

What better way to drown out the sound of human extinction, then by donning a pair of retro Space Invaders headphones. They can be pre-ordered and will ship in mid-late October 2008 for $19.90. They’re free to traitors.

Cassette watch is all kinds of awesome

Cassette watch is all kinds of awesome
I don’t know who had the idea, but all I can say is that the end result is pretty awesome looking. It’s like wearing a mix tape on your wrist, without the often annoying music of the era. It’s made of sturdy stuff, namely stainless steel and features twin dials. One for hours, one for minutes.

The detail on the cassette face is really awesome and authetic looking. The hands almost look like they are advancing the tape. The only way it could possibly be any cooler is if it played real music, which it doesn’t. It will cost you about $70. Expect an 8-Track watch in the near future.

Robots of Battlestar Galactica
Sometimes the coolest gadgets in Sci-Fi are not gadgets at all. But robots. Here’s a look at some of the most memorable robots from sci-fi in no particular order. It’s not a complete list. Think of it more as a walk down memory lane. Because geeks love Sci-Fi and Sci-Fi has a long history of loving robots.

Kool-Aid scented Reebok sneakers

Kool-Aid scented Reebok sneakers
We first told you about this bizarre combo in early January on our sister site Poptherapy. It should be noted that this hybrid of powder flavored drink aka liquid crack, combined with sneaker is completely unnatural and I am now more convinced then ever that the apocalypse is among us.

Do you really want your feet to smell like various Kool-Aid flavors? If you wear them in the rain, will you create magical Kool-Aid puddles as you walk? I have no idea. I’m still too perplexed by the whole thing. I kinda wish the Kool-Aid guy would crash through my wall so I could ask him about this. Then I would sue that fat wet bastard for all his sneaker money. He broke my wall!

Reverse Pac-Man game: you chase Pac-Man

Posted in Pac Man by Conner Flynn on February 16th, 2008

Bizarro Pac-Man
What the hell? A planet where apes evolved from men? Not exactly, but a twist just as mind bending. This is a world where, instead of Pac-Man being chased by ghosts, you control the ghosts as Pac-Man comes after you. That’s the idea behind this new Flash game called “Anti Pac-Man”.

Kind of a squad based version of the old classic. You use the 1 through 4 keys to select and take command of each ghost, then you use the arrow keys to guide them through the maze and avoid the yellow dot eater. Thing is, while Pac-Man is gobbling up dots, your score goes down. By keeping your ghosts alive, you can minimize the damage and keep him from chomping more. Personally I can’t help feeling a bit like Charlton Heston at the end of Planet of the Apes. It’s just unnatural.
