The Archos 70 Android tablet is now finally available for purchase on Archos’ official website. The tablet device sells for $274.99 (w/ 8GB of flash storage) or $349.99 (w/ 250GB hard drive).

The Archos 70 features a 7-inch 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen display, a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, a microSD card slot, a front VGA camera, a G-sensor, 720p HD video playback support, WiFi, Bluetooth, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port, a built-in stand and the Android 2.2 (Froyo) OS is running the show.

For awhile there batteries were getting recalled fairly often, but now it’s been quite awhile since we’ve seen a major recall involving laptop batteries. Sadly, its back in the news. Today, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with Hewlett-Packard, has issued a voluntary recall of about 70,000 Li-ion batteries.

Apparently, these cells can “overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers,”. Thus far, the firm and CPSC have received two separate reports of batteries overheating and rupturing. The result is “flames/fire that caused minor property damage.”

Oh yes. We like shiny. This is one shiny tree. It’s the kind of project that you take on when you find yourself with 70 defunct SCSI hard drives and a whole lotta free time on your hands. He took the drives from RAID arrays that were destined for the scrap heap. Instead of performing the DoD wipe that would have otherwise been needed, he built this geek tree from the shiny discs within. The tree is made entirely from the drive pieces, with one exception. A single nut.
