It’s always interesting to know how much a device costs to actually build, compared to what you pay for it and what it is capable of. In the case of the now available Nintendo 3DS, research firm iSuppli has the answers.

They have taken a 3DS apart to figure it all out. The most expensive parts inside are the Sharp screens estimated at $38.80. The processor is about $10, and the memory subsystem costs about $8.36. This seven-inch, 800 x 480 device from Eken is selling for $680 RMB in China. That’s $99.53 to us. Seems like a bargain until you look closer. It has only 2GB of storage, which can be expanded to 32GB with SD.

Some other features include a VIA 8505 processor, two hours of battery life on a single charge and has Android 1.5 installed. So really, it isn’t much of a bargain after all. Oh well.
