Ben Heck Builds 1970s Atari-Style Xbox 360

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on March 21st, 2011

Ben Heck, the man behind thousands of awesome mods is back. This time it’s an old school 1977 Atari merged with the Xbox 360 in a laptop kind of deal. This custom mod looks just like Atari would have made the device had they been capable.

It will handle all of the newest games and the old, including Yar’s Revenge and Star Raiders. In his latest show, he takes viewers through the entire build process. The final build is a thing of geek beauty. He has done it yet again.

Xbox 360 console ban is forever

Xbox 360 console ban is foreverXbox 360 owners who have been banned from Microsoft’s Xbox Live service are out of luck. Completely out of luck. Those of you who have been banned will need to purchase a whole new console if you ever want to get back into the online action.

Microsoft says that banned machines will be permanently barred and “unable to connect to Xbox Live” as affected consoles do not have any recourse for terms of use violations. Like it or not, that’s the word. Those banned add up to about a million gamers missing from Xbox Live.

Ben Heck’s latest portable Xbox 360

Ben Heck's latest portable Xbox 360After five versions, Ben Heck’s portable Xbox 360 mods are still awesome. He just keeps getting better and better. This latest version looks like a Mac product when closed, and features a 17-inch Gateway LCD panel. Some improvements on this one include a Jasper motherboard, a flush-mount DVD door and side panels, digital potentiometer / button volume controls, and an ethernet port in addition to WiFi.

He ditched the camera, but there’s still two USB ports. It’s the only white-colored Xbox 360 laptop he’s built since the original. The man continues to be the Leonardo DaVinci of gaming consoles.

Xbox 360 Hellboy case mod

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on June 17th, 2009

Xbox 360 Hellboy case modThis Hellboy Xbox 360 case mod is awesome. And very very red. It was made by Frank Gonzales, who has previously created a Gears of War and other case mods. He really outdid himself with this one. It looks as if it has just clawed it’s way free from hell and is ready for some serious gaming.

My first reaction upon seeing this was to wonder where the horns were, but it is absolutely perfect as it is.

DIY PSP laptop mod

DIY PSP laptopSure, the PSP Go! looks awesome. It’s slimmer, lighter, has downloads instead of UMD. But where’s the full QWERTY keyboard? Acidmods forum member folklord36’s PSP Laptop does have QWERTY, thanks to an Xbox Chat Pad. It also has relocated speakers, LED lighting and more.

The screen section is a modified Joytech visor that has the same finish as the PSP, and its sturdy hinge can be positioned at anything up to 180-degrees. We don’t know how long it took him to create this or how much it cost, but we wouldn’t mind having one ourselves.

Xbox 360 arcade cabinetIf you’re a serious gamer, Solomods has a custom-built Xbox 360 arcade machine that they’ll sell you for $2,250. The original Midway arcade cabinet was once The Simpsons game, but the Microsoft game console has been added and it’s been repainted and given a new monitor and front-loading disk tray, two joysticks, a 60GB hard drive, WiFi, along with display and volume control.

It also supports your favorite wireless controller. They want to sell this thing so if you order it, he’ll throw in an illustrated owners manual. It’s available for pick-up in Cleveland, Ohio. What are you waiting for?

Sonic the Hedgehog on the XBox 360

Sonic the Hedgehog on the XBox 360Case mods don’t always have to involve LEDS and intense design work. Sometimes it’s cool just to keep it simple and paint a pretty picture on it. Here, someone took Sonic the Hedgehog and painted him right onto this XBox 360.

This is the kind of limited edition that Microsoft needs to be putting out there. This kind of paint job just gives your console a life of it’s own. I can almost see this Xbox sliding down rails and collecting rings when the owner isn’t home. That explains why the console is so hot when no one is playing it.

Xbox 360 modded car

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on January 1st, 2009

Xbox 360 modded carApparently, this modder hated the thought of leaving his console home alone while he was out and about in the world. Separation anxiety no doubt. Yes, this is an Xbox 360 Console and the Controllers Modded in a car! An Xbox 360 in a car, you ask? Yes. And look how well the car and the Xbox get along. It’s like they were meant for each other.

The XBox 360 has been embedded in to the dash while 1 controller rests in the steering wheel and the other sits comfortably in front of the gear shift. It’s a great idea, but the one fatal flaw is that at some point, you will have to park that car and walk away. At which time a thief throws a rock through the window and makes off with your console. It really is a beauty though.

Trackball mod puts some retro on your Wiimote

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on November 12th, 2008

Trackball mod puts some retro on your WiimoteThe modders over at Acid Mods can’t help but defile all of their Wiimotes. Despite the fact that that sounds just plain wrong, the results are pretty cool. The rapid fire switch was cool and brought back memories of the Turbo Advance.

Now they’ve modded a trackball into a Wiimote, which also functions as D-pad and A button. This is pretty useful as it puts both under your thumb at the same time and should make web browsing interesting. Soon there will be an order page and instructions for adding the trackball to other controllers, like a PSP, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 and PS3. Now we just have to get Missile Command and Centipede on the Wii and we’ll be set.

Make your Xbox 360 glow neon green

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on May 26th, 2008

Make your Xbox 360 glow neon greenXbox 360 owners can now make their Xbox glow like depleted uranium, without setting off the geiger counter. In the light of day, the XCM Pearl Glow is translucent so you can see the insides. Turn out the lights and it glows a bright X-Files green.

It replaces the case entirely. You’ll think it’s the 80′s all over again and it will let you know where your console is at all times. If this is your thing and you can’t get enough glow in the dark toys, you can find one at Extreme Mods.

Xbox 360 Mods Banned From Xbox Live

Posted in Microsoft,News,Xbox 360 by Darrin Olson on May 20th, 2007

Modified Xbox 360 game consoles are being banned from Xbox LiveUntil recently Xbox 360 owners were able to download a firmware hack which allowed them to play backed-up games and essentially boot-legged copies of games on their game console. They were also able to participate with them on Xbox Live seemingly without any notice from Microsoft, but that appears to have changed.

Apparently with the recent Spring Update earlier this month and coinciding with the beta release of Halo 3, Microsoft has shown that they are able to detect and ban those consoles with modified firmware. …
