Tatooine Sand Wristwatch

Posted in Star Wars by Conner Flynn on July 6th, 2011

Star Wars fans will love this Tatooine watch almost as much as they love the planet. Back in the old days, movies were more authentic and had more style since you had to build highly detailed props instead of using green screen. Scenes had depth and character. As you might remember Lucas traveled to Tunisia, where he built the Lars homestead, which still stands in the same spot all these years later.

But the forces of nature have not been kind. It needs help. That’s why some fans have banded together to save it, through Kickstarter. They have already reached their goal, but the more help they get, the better. If you pledge $77 you’ll receive an official Lars Expedition Wristwatch, which will contain sand from the location. That makes this a kind of Holy Star Wars relic.

Rollerphone concept is a phone for your wrist

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on March 22nd, 2011

How about a phone that conveniently sits on your wrist? Alexey Chugunnikov has designed the Rollerphone concept and hopes that one day it becomes a reality. It is a wearable cell phone that looks like a wristwatch.

The Rollerphone has a retractable transparent screen at the base, so when you get a call, just pull out the screen. It features a media center, so you can watch videos, chat online, play games, read e-books and more. It will also project the time. One day this will be practical, but for now it is just a concept.

Phosphor Reveal watch uses Swarovski crystals to tell time

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on March 7th, 2011

Swarovski crystals. They have been used to bling up many a gadget. The Phosphor brand has announced the Reveal line, which uses Swarovski crystals to actually tell the time. Phosphor is using “proprietary Micro-Magnetic Mechanical Digital technology” to rotate Swarovski crystals into place to form the readouts on the face.

The models are available in six styles, four of which are for women, and two for men, for $199 and up. These crystals sure look better on a watch face, than they do on an iPad.

Order in Chaos clock is hard to read and cool at the same time

Posted in Clocks by Shane McGlaun on September 27th, 2010

We have seen our share of strange clocks around there and typically, when we are talking timepieces they are wristwatches from Tokyoflash or some similar purveyor of odd watches. This wall clock is from a designer that was looking to make a statement about the order in chaos.

The clock has the numbers you expect to see around the clock face, but those numbers are broken into bits. As the hour gets closer, the numbers slowly take more from until you can read them. The single hand in the center of the clock is for minutes.

Incipio Linq turns your iPod nano into a watch

Posted in iPod Nano by Conner Flynn on September 12th, 2010

We all joked that the new iPod nano could be turned into a watch, so of course now iPod accessory makers are making accessories to turn your iPod nano into a digital wristwatch. It’s just gadget evolution. Incipio has announced the Linq, which is basically a case for the iPod nano, that also allows it to function as a wristwatch.

It will protect your device from bumps and knocks and drops. There’s no pricing info or a release date for this yet, but the nano really does make a nice watch it seems.

Devon Works Tread 1 bulletproof watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on April 20th, 2010

Man, this is one awesome looking watch. It has a ton of amazing detail. But looks aren’t all the Devon Works Tread 1 has going for it. It’s also the first bulletproof watch we’ve ever seen. Perfect if bad guys are aiming at your wrist. Though I suppose the impact would still shatter your wrist. It won’t protect you where it counts.

How much would you pay for a bullet-proof watch? Well, you’ll have to pay $15,000 if you want this one. I suppose you could do the Wonder Woman thing and deflect bullets with this thing, just know that it is still gonna hurt.

4N watch looks crazy

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2010

The 4N watch looks awesomely retro with numbers everywhere. It accomplishes the unusual look thanks to a disc-based mechanism that rotates all four numbers into position, giving you the current time.

The three discs are made of aluminum or a titanium alloy and the MVT01 movement is exposed to the eye. As usual with this kind of luxury watch, you can expect to pay a hefty price for this kind of style. There will only be 16 available worldwide.

Truth About Roswell Watch is geeky cool

Posted in Watches by Shane McGlaun on March 9th, 2009

roswellwatch-sbI haven’t worn a wristwatch in years, my iPhone is my timepiece of choice and many people are the same way. However, the wristwatch in some forms is still very interesting to me and Romain Jermoe has a new, very limited edition watch that is beyond cool.

The watch is called The Truth About Roswell and is being offering in a very limited edition run of only 9 units. The watch is from the Moon Dust-DNA series and pricing is unspecified, but sure to be expensive. It has mechanical movement and power comes from a winding mechanism. That means it has all those tiny gears and springs inside the case.

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2009

Ulysse Nardin hybrid smart phoneUlysse Nardin’s upcoming Chairman will be officially unveiled at Baselworld later this month. It’s billed as a “hybrid smart phone” and before you ask, no you can’t afford it. It will feature a visible, fully-functional kinetic rotor that will assist it in getting power, just like in a mechanical wristwatch.

There are not a ton of details, but we know that it’ll be unlocked and limited to 1,846 pieces. Full details should arrive around March 26 when Baselworld kicks off. You can use that time to save up, steal, sell all of your possessions, and still fall short of it’s asking price.

Asteroids watch outdoes the Pong-playing watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on December 17th, 2008

Asteroids watch outdoes the Pong-playing watchJohn Maushammer enjoyed some minor fame in geek circles with his Pong wristwatch, but he craved more. So he delivered unto mankind a new great thing. The DIY Asteroids Watch outdoes it’s predecessor.

It even features a tilt sensor so the wearer can control the action by just tilting their wrist and going pew pew pew. Frankly, we could go on about it all day, but the bottom line is that the man is a DIY game watch god. Check out a video below.

Tokyoflash launches the Ni

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on December 2nd, 2008

Tokyoflash launches the NiTokyoflash, those wild and crazy watch makers just never take a breather. Which is great for us, because if it wasn’t for Tokyoflash, watches would be boring. They’re back, having never left, with their latest wristwatch known as the Ni.

This design is at once stylish and minimal. The Ni is made entirely from stainless steel and features a polished finish, with horizontal grooves on the face and strap that give it a great look. The time progresses in one direction. Touch the upper button for an animation before the time is displayed. Each LED on the bottom line indicates two hours, the line above indicates a single hour, a combination presenting the current hour. Groups of 10 minutes are presented on the center row and single minutes on the upper two lines.

Whizzwatch: Control R2-D2 with your watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on September 22nd, 2008

Whizzwatch: Control R2-D2 with your watchThe R2-D2 Whizzwatch while not heavy on style, lets you control a miniature version of R2-D2 with a special wristwatch IR transmitter. R2 is attached to it’s strap. Just unclip the little droid, put him on your desk and watch him go. The watch supposedly has a variety of digital readouts, and you can switch between 12/24 hour displays. It costs about $36. My concern with this watch would be running into some dude with a Jawa watch. If the two should fight, your little droid might end up in a Jawa sandcrawler.

You + Chapter One watch = Chapter 11

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on June 19th, 2008

Chapter One watch from Maîtres du Temps
The Chapter One watch from Maîtres du Temps is a collaboration between three leading watch designers, Christophe Claret, Peter Speake-Marin, and Roger Dubuis. It shows. This watch is a real looker. Plus, the Chapter One has a tourbillon, retrograde GMT and date indicators, with a mono-pusher chronograph and 60-minute totalizer.

One of the coolest and simpler features is the pair of rolling displays that show the day of the week and the moon phase. Prepare to be broke after buying this beauty. It’s a limited edition of only 33, which immediately jacks the price skyhigh. It will cost you just under $400,000.
