Make your HDTV look retro and stylish

Posted in Television by Conner Flynn on April 4th, 2010

Remember the old days when TVs were more a piece of furniture? They were stylish and had substance and they were so heavy that once you put it in it’s place, it stayed there forever. TVs have slimmed down a lot since then and they’ve lost all of their good looks with the weight.

Halden-Caviglia TV sets want to bring back the retro TV using today’s technology. You can choose a screen between 42 inches and 65 inches in a bunch of Art Deco and American Craftsman styles, and the company even offers an IR repeater so your remote can communicate with the TV through all of that wood.

The Swiss Army Knife of Steampunk guns

Posted in Weapons by Conner Flynn on March 31st, 2010

Looking for some multi-function in your Steampunk gun? Then this one is for you? It’s basically a Steampunk Swiss-Army Knife. This steampunk metapen gun is almost as small as the world’s smallest gun as well. It’s made from all the usual materials, brass ,copper, wood and steel.

And it does more than just shoot Victorian-clad villains dead. There’s a fork, knife, spoon, lighter, USB drive, watch, lamp, screwdriver, pipe, toothbrush, sawing blade, nail clipper and two extra mines. Pretty awesome.

Kenwood AS-iP70 Digital Photo Frame with iPhone dock

Posted in Digital Photo Frames by Conner Flynn on March 24th, 2010

The Kenwood AS-iP70 digital photo frame looks like a typical photo frame, but it has something extra. An iPod/iPhone dock. Even better, the dock can be put away when not in use. The device supports memory cards and USB flash drives too, and of course displays the pictures on it’s 7-inch WVGA (800 x 480) TFT display.

You also get an AM/FM radio with an alarm function, so it doubles as an alarm clock. The only bad part is that there’s no video playback. Look for the Kenwood AS-iP70 to be released in April, when it will cost you about 25,000 Yen (or $274).

Steampunk PC is cool and not my style

Posted in Computers,Concepts by Shane McGlaun on March 19th, 2010

I like Steampunk stuff mostly because the things look cool and I can appreciate how long it would take to build some of these designs. That said you would never find steampunk gear in my house. I like my tech to look like tech, not something I might find in grandma’s attic.

A new steampunk computer with some serious attention to detail has turned up over on Yanko Design. The thing is the complete deal with a cool looking tower thingy that might be a speaker, a keyboard, mouse pad, mouse, and a display. The keyboard is my favorite part.

Final Cut saw blade does two things at once

Posted in Tools by Shane McGlaun on March 12th, 2010

I’m not cut out for building things out of wood. I once built a deck and it leaned enough that you felt drunk before the party even started. I used to know a dude that was a cabinet maker and did lots of cutting and sanding during his day. Sometimes I see products, I wonder why it took so long for someone to come out with. The Final Cut saw blade is one of those products.

This Final Cut saw blade is so cool. It features a normal saw blade that has sandpaper discs that stick to the side. The sandpaper sands the rough edges down as you cut the wood.

Coolest baby furniture ever for your geeklings

Posted in Furniture by Shane McGlaun on March 10th, 2010

I remember putting together the crib for my son. It took a while to get the thing put together and then I realized it wouldn’t roll through the door to his room after I built it in the living room. It seemed like only a few weeks later he needed a toddler bed and we were throwing the crib out.

If you have young geeks and you want some cool baby furniture that you can use for a while, Andesen furniture has a concept that is just for you. The Smart Kid furniture starts as a crib with drawers under and beside the bed to store things in.

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on February 28th, 2010

Aaron Woodman, the director of consumer experiences for Microsoft’s mobile division, showed off a prototype of LG’s Windows Phone 7 Series phone over at Engadget. We don’t have many details, but we do know that it’s a QWERTY slider that’s just a tad thicker than the iPhone, with a 5MP camera, and six hardware buttons.

Woodman wouldn’t confirm or deny if Windows Phone 7 Series would support Mac OS, but he mentioned that they are currently discussing it at least. A windows phone supporting Mac OS? Maybe. Sounds like crazy talk.

Love or hate Apple, no one can deny that Jobs and his team can make and market a product. The company has the most popular music store around and sells more apps than anyone else sells as well.

Apple has announced that the 10 billionth song has been sold via the iTunes store. The song that made the historic 10 billionth purchase was “Guess Things Happen That Way” by Johnny Cash. The track was purchased by Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Georgia.

Sonim XP2 Spirit 3G phone abused at MWC

Posted in Mobile Phones by Shane McGlaun on February 17th, 2010

One of the most embarrassing things I have seen happen to a manufacturer at CES happened this year when Sonim challenged people to break its indestructible X3 handset. One guy from BBC succeeded, thwarting all claims of being indestructible. Sonim is showing off its new XP2 Spirit at MWC and letting people beat the thing up.

This time around, the handset is called “nearly unbreakable” and people are beating the device up pretty good with a tool belt featuring nails, wood, sand paper, and other torturous devices for which to work on the smartphone with. The handset is the firms first 3G offering.

My Pet Speaker lets your animals rock out

Posted in Pets by Shane McGlaun on February 10th, 2010

We all know that many pets like dogs have hearing that is much better than human hearing. That means that if the music you listens too hurts your ears, the dog’s ears probably really hurt. Pet Acoustics has announced a new device for pet owners called the My Pet Speaker that lets you play music for animals at levels that won’t hurt their hearing.

The device has a 3.5mm input and will work with any input source including CD players, iPods, iPhones and more. The speaker uses an omnidirectional design to provide quality sound anywhere around the speaker. The driver is a 4-inch unit and it has a frequency response of 200Hz ~ 12KHz.
