Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on June 7th, 2010

If you think that your phone was expensive, think again. The Ulysse Nardin Chairman phone is $50K and doesn’t even run Froyo. Instead you get 2.1. CrunchGear recently went hands on with the phone to see what you get for $50k. Turns out, you also get a dock.

A dock unlike any other, with polished wood panels, speakers and USB ports. Still not worth $50K, but we won’t tell the rich. Hit up the link to get the full scoop if you are shopping for an insane luxury phone.

iPhone 4G wood dock

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on June 1st, 2010

The iPhone 4G hasn’t even been announced yet and already designer Chris Chan has developed a stylish solid wood dock for the new iPhone. He used the leaked iPhone 4G prototypes for inspiration and dimensions. Hopefully Steve Jobs doesn’t change some details just to spite guys like Chris.

Apparently the iPhone 4G will only be able to charge in landscape mode, but hey it’s wood, it’s stylish and hopefully it will be available soon. Chris hopes to mass-produce the design after the iPhone 4G launches. As you can see, it looks good with a cup of tea.

Resonance iPod Speaker Dock looks like an Apple product

Posted in iPod Accessories by Conner Flynn on May 17th, 2010

This Resonance iPod Speaker Dock looks familiar. Like a familiar Apple product. It does do some unique tricks though. It uses resonance to transmit the sound from your iPod or iPhone through a hard surface like a wooden table, or marble floor.

There’s also an audio amplifier, but we’re skeptical about the audio quality that this device delivers. With it’s 3.5mm line-in jack, you can hook up non-Apple audio devices as well.

The Smartphone Guitar

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on May 9th, 2010

This guy created a music app and installed it on multiple Android and WinMo phones, and even an iPod Touch. Then taped them together to make a bizarre looking guitar, on which he can play Cracklin’ Rose.

It wasn’t easy. He ended up writing it three times: in java for android, in C# for windows mobile and in Objective-C for iPhone. To play them all at once, he just taped them on a piece of wood together with a battery powered speaker, then added lots of audio cables.

Woodpecker Alarm Clock

Posted in Clocks by Conner Flynn on May 9th, 2010

If you like your clock to look like nature and have a thing for Woodpeckers, here’s a clock for you. It was designed by Natalie Duckett. The Woodpecker Alarm Clock has no clock face to tell the time. Instead it will measure how long you have been asleep and wake you up when you’ve had the right amount.

I don’t need to stinkin woodpecker clock to tell me when I’ve had enough sleep, but hey that’s just me. There are two alarms, one for the evening, telling you when to go to sleep, and one in the morning, telling you when to wake up.

iPad in a kitchen cabinet

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2010

The iPad is a pretty versatile piece of tech. It’s also very portable. That is, if you don’t put it in your kitchen cabinet. Then portability goes out the window. Still, the iPad as the centerpiece of your kitchen makes sense. TUAW reader Alan Daly built his directly into the side of a kitchen cabinet, and we can only imagine all of the recipes he’s cooking up.

His screen displays a virtual aquarium when not in use, and don’t worry, it’s above the point of food splattering all over it. Basically, you just cut a hole and add a pair of wooden strips for support. We aren’t sure how he keeps it charged.

YouTube adds Movie and TV show rentals from 99 Cents

Posted in YouTube by Conner Flynn on April 23rd, 2010

After experimenting with movie rentals in January, YouTube has added a bunch of movies and TV episodes that you may actually want to see. However there’s still nothing very mainstream in the YouTube store. It’s mostly indie films, Bollywood and documentaries, which are viewable for 48 hours after renting.

They cost between 99 cents and $4, with payments made via Google Check-Out. YouTube will need to strike some deals with movie studios to get some decent stuff on the site. Stuff with explosions should do the trick.

Did Gizmodo pay $10,000 for “lost” iPhone 4G

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 19th, 2010

The Internet is on fire today with Gizmodo’s hands on preview of what appears to be Apple’s next-gen iPhone. In case you missed the story, someone found an iPhone in a bar in Redwood City. The device appeared to be an iPhone 3GS, but when the cover was removed, it was clear that this was no ordinary iPhone. It appeared to be Apple’s next-gen iPhone. And it looks like that is exactly what it is.

The guy who found the iPhone sent pictures of it to Engadget. Later Gizmodo actually obtained the iPhone in question, which has given Gizmodo over 2.5 million page views on that story alone. Then came word that Gizmodo had paid 10 grand for the iPhone prototype. Did they? We don’t know. Were they and Engadget in a bidding war? We don’t know.

Posted in DIY,iPad accessories by Shane McGlaun on April 16th, 2010

It’s nice to see geeky parents starting their little geeklings off early on tech. My kids really like my iPad but agree it’s a pain to look down at the screen. One 10-year-old boy from Jersey decided to make his own iPad stand.

The stand is made from a couple chunks of wood, a hinge, and a couple drawer knobs. All of the materials are said to cost about $13.

The iPad LapDock

Posted in iPad accessories by Conner Flynn on April 9th, 2010

Every tablet needs the perfect keyboard accessory that can also function as a hard case right? Well, some folks have built just that for the iPad. It’s called the LapDock, and it’s goal is to replace the laptop with the tablet. Yeah, let them dream.

The LapDock is basically just a carved wooden case for your iPad and Apple Bluetooth keyboard. If only there were more connectivity options, they just might be onto something here. Still, it is a cute case.
