PowerPutt Mini Golf arcade game tees off

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on October 30th, 2008

PowerPuttI’ve never played a round of real golf, but I play mini golf with my kids quite frequently. The embarrassing part about mini golf with my kids is that my son usually beats me. It’s tough on the ego to be trounced by a 7-year-old, even if he is like a mini golf Tiger Woods with three hole in one shots per game.

I can still beat my son in video games though and if I can find PowerPutt in a local arcade the tournament is on. PowerPutt comes from the company that developed Golden Tee and offers good graphics with the same sort of controls used by Golden Tee.

Walking House: The Gypsy caravan of the future

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on October 21st, 2008

Sure, when the oil shortage becomes oil-no-more, it would be nice to drive around in search of fuel like Mad Max, but what would be even better is to have your own movable home to wander the wasteland in. Something on legs that can roam anywhere. Something like this. But faster.

It’s made to be a “modular dwelling system that enables persons to live a peaceful nomadic life, moving slowly through the landscape or cityscape”. It’s even environmentally friendly according to its designers, thanks to its use of solar energy, small windmills and a wood stove. So it looks like nomads of the future, or gypsies if you will, will be wandering the landscape in this contraption. I look forward to this new breed of hippy and I’d like to be the first to tell them to get this beast the hell off of my property. Damn long-hairs. But I guess I’ll just have to wait.

Limited Edition Beatles iPod

Posted in iPod by Conner Flynn on October 20th, 2008

Limited Edition Beatles iPodIt’s been a long wait. A long and winding road if you will. At last, the Beatles iPod is out, with only 2,500 units available. You know you want it. And in these tough economic times, Paul, Ringo, and Yoko need your help. So why not fork out $795. The Limited Edition Ultimate Collector’s Beatles iPod Set comes complete with a wooden box designed by Psycho Bunny, where you can store your 120GB Beatles iPod, 13 original Beatles albums on CD, two masters, the Love CD, and an engraved guitar pick that is surely the pick of destiny.

Uh, hang on a minute here. Anyone wanting a Beatles iPod surely owns all of these CDs anyway, so what gives? I don’t need all of that extra junk for 800 clams. Just give me a decent Beatles iPod. Preferably something with a classic album cover on it.

Wood Grain USB optical mouse

Wood Grain USB optical mouseIf you have an unnatural love of wooden gadgets, you might want to caress the grainy surfaces of the Wood Grain Optical Mouse. This optical 800 dpi USB mouse sports USB 2.0 connectivity, true 800DPI, and 3-buttons Optical Mouse. Best of all it’s only $12. It will go with the rest of your wood gadgets, like those wooden animal drives on your desk for instance.

Why do you love wooden gadgets so much anyway? Are you working on a theme or something? Trying to be some kind of wood-dude? Like a James Bond villain whose thing is to have wood everything? I just noticed that it’s all wood with you. I mean, it’s overkill. It’s an addiction is what it is. You know you don’t need this mouse, but you’ll get it, Woody. Woodrow.

Sherwood BDP-5003 Blu-ray playerBlu-ray finally killed off the HD DVD format early this year meaning that many were expecting to see Blu-ray players drop in price quickly. That didn’t really materialize with Blu-ray players staying at levels about the same as before HD DVD died. At least one Blu-ray player has finally come down into the reach of most consumers.

Sherwood has announced a new Blu-ray player called the BDP-5003 that retails for $299.95 and offers upscaling, 1080p resolution and video playback at both 60Hz and 24Hz. The player is fully compatible with HDMI 1.3 and supports Dolby TruHD and DTS-Master Audio HD.

Nokia builds a wood phone, squirrels protest

Nokia builds a wood phone, squirrels protestFound in textlad’s Flickr pool, with the copy reading: “The first Nokia eight mega pixel phone? I guess we’ll have to wait some time for that… Only a concept made of wood from sustainable forests at this stage but fun anyway.”

Apparently Nokia themselves designed and created this object of Ewok desire. It’s an 8-megapixel “handset” that appears to actually work. Are they up to something? Only the creatures of the forest know for sure. Obviously we won’t be seeing it available anytime soon. Though it would be cool to use, what with it’s old-timey look and all.

Mahjong USB flash drive

Posted in USB Flash Drives by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2008

Mahjong USB flash driveMahjong tiles can be considered an art form, just like the game and now you can get in on the action with a Mahjong USB flash drive. It’s called the MahjongDisk and it’s a handcrafted USB flash drive made to look like three Mahjong tiles stacked together.

Thing is at $400 you might as well just make your own. The $400 drive is constructed from wood and available in 8GB or 16GB capacities. The Lan-Xue model will retail for another $100 compare to the Li-Shui, and both use materials found in classic Chinese furniture. Read and write speeds have been rated at 18MB/s and 15MB/s. The price includes getting them engraved with whatever you like, with something like, “I paid $400 and all I got was this lousy USB flash drive”.

iPhone coasters protect your table’s user interface

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on September 29th, 2008

iPhone coasters protect your table’s user interfaceThese coasters from Meninos, take your love of iPhone and use that power to protect furniture. They’re made from thin plywood wrapped in a vinyl decal, with rubber slapped on the bottom. The 3.34″ coasters come in a pack of 16 for $60, which seems just a bit expensive, but let’s face it, it isn’t cheap being a geek.

Now, if only they had wireless capabilities, you could set your drink down and open the app at the same time. Or play an iPhone game between two drinkers. Everytime you take a drink, you set it down on an app and counter each other’s moves. Oh well, maybe next time.

Atari Hero: Play Atari 2600 like a rock god

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on September 28th, 2008

Atari Hero: Play Atari like a rock godThis is not my first console mod, but I think it’s the neatest. As far as I know it hasn’t been done before. I wanted to be able play Atari 2600 games like you play Guitar Hero… With a guitar. With this mod, you just pop in your favorite 2600 cartridge, and play the game on your guitar. The screen is right in front facing you as you hold it. Instead of strumming, just use the small joystick on the upper right, or for games like Breakout use the paddle controller below the screen. The fire button is the top button on the neck of the guitar, so yes, you really hold it in guitar fashion as you play.

I had originally intended to make an NES-Hero, taking advantage of all the guitar buttons, but didn’t have a spare laying around. Which was just fine with me because this Atari-Hero turned out just awesome. It took me about 2 months more or less, simply because it was hard to find the time with my duties here at the ‘Brick, but it’s finally finished. I incorporated actual pieces of the Atari console itself, like the faux woodgrain front panel with logo and the grill from the top of the console, even the cartridge slot itself. The circuit boards all had to be fabricated and custom shaped, then put in place. The Atari console combined with the circuit boards makes for a stunning look in person. (Sorry about the crappy pics. It’s so shiny it’s hard to get a good shot) More pics below.

Speaker Buddies are creepy children

Posted in Speakers by Conner Flynn on September 27th, 2008

Speaker Buddies are creepy childrenWhoever it was that said that children should be seen and not heard probably didn’t own any Speaker Buddies. These creepy kids are seen and heard. And for some reason they look like Kenny from Southpark. It’s British designer Alex Underwood’s idea for turnig your hi-fi into some sort of creepy ode to Kenneth, he who dies alot. There they sit in ominous judgment of all who enter your home, blasting sound out of their hood. Thankfully they remain a concept at the moment, but that could change.
