Liquid Wood could replace everything plastic

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on August 29th, 2010

We use a ton of oil to create plastics for everything from watches to bicycle helmets. It hasn’t been easy to find a replacement material that can be just as tough, versatile and easy to produce, but German inventors have developed a new material that has a lot of promise. It could replace everything plastic using something as natural as wood.

It looks like wood and feels like wood. The material is called Arboform and is produced after combining lignin, a discarded element of regular wood with natural resins, flax and fiber. Arboform is ideal since it can be molded into any object form which is normally made using petroleum products.

Edmund Dohnert’s mechanical curiosities

Edmund Dohnert's mechanical curiositiesEdmund Dohnert has always had some uncertainty about whether he’s an artist or an engineer. We don’t really care. His works are just plain cool. And yes, they are both art and engineering. Just plain fun to look at and watch.

For instance, the Victor Rat Trap No. 1 pictured above has a knight repeatedly attacking an evil jester in order to save He-Man’s life. The only power source is a simple rat trap on a wooden base. The rat trap’s spring can be pulled all the way back and held, thanks to a cord and roller arrangement attached to a crank shaft.

Inflatable Golf Simulator for your yard

Inflatable Golf Simulator for your yard
If you like the Full Swing Golf simulator, but don’t want to tear up your home, this is the way to go. All you need is a yard large enough to park this eyesore in. Like other simulators, it uses a projection screen along with a motion sensors that will detect the motion and speed of the ball. That info is then put on screen and you can watch the result on a 3D course.

Apparently, it only works with woods and irons, so you’ll still suck at putting. They say that the inflatable structure is weatherproof so you could even play in nasty weather. Your neighbors will probably wonder why you vanish inside an inflatable house every afternoon. Nosy bastards.

Gas Pump entertainment center

Gas Pump entertainment center
The T39 Replica Gas Pump Entertainment Center will take you straight back to the 1940′s and have you wiping off windshields and checking oil levels, while watching TV. It’s geared toward the dude that wants to spend nearly 2 grand on a entertainment center that has a maximum TV size of 13 inches.

It even has an illuminated globe on top to make it feel authentic. Despite it’s neat retro stylings and details, this is probably not the best choice you can make in Entertainment Centers. Clint Eastwood certainly doesn’t look happy about it. It will cost you $1,775. That money is better saved for real gas at the pump.

Google co-owned Chinese firm sued over movies

Google co-owned Chinese firm sued over movies
Six American film studios have filed a lawsuit against the Chinese file-sharing firm Xunlei Networking Technology for copyright infringement. They were offering hundreds of movie downloads illegally. The firm is part owned by Google. The studios are seeking more than $1 million in damages and costs, according to the Motion Picture Association, though that seems a low number.

The MPA trade group said in a statement on Friday that in addition, the plaintiffs are seeking a public acknowledgement of the infringements and a pledge from Xunlei to stop them. The MPA said that Xunlei facilitated the unauthorised transmission of hundreds of Hollywood movies produced by its members, like “Spiderman 3,” “War of the Worlds” and “Miami Vice.”(Who the hell watches Miami Vice? Now that they have, I assume they have learned their lesson. Some movies aren’t worth the trouble.)
